The Lowlies, "I'm Gonna Ride," // GemsOnVHS™

I met Caleb and Carolyn Spaulding through a friend, Jonathan from Free Dirt records. I got an advance copy of their upcoming record (perks of the gig, folks), and really respected the writing and sound of it. Gave me some Jason Molina vibes, and that's really the only kind of vibes anyone needs to give me to get me interested. They came out for a little trip to Tennessee to visit me, from their home in rural western New York. Carolyn is a baker, Caleb is a carpenter. They have eight kids or something like that. It's really biblical over there. We kicked around Nashville and Smithville, traded tunes and ended up recording this one in my friend Meredith's backyard.
Anyhow, after they left I learned that its a small world after all. I'd mention them to other songwriters and vagabonds I know, and they'd tell me stories of meeting the two in upstate, here and there, busking on corners or crashing on couches. Jeremy Quentin (of Small Houses fame) told me Caleb let him crash on the couch once on a tour. Caleb had found a bread oven in the trash and was subsisting off only bread made from that. My kind of people. Shout out Matt Moore too, their charismatic, patient and awesome manager. I fucking love this song, and all of the stuff i've heard. I wanna ride!

Wow this is my first time hearing these two and I was really touched, and really connected to some of the lyrics. Even at the beginning I didnt know of it resonated until he said its okay of it takes a minute to make up my mind. From then, i was hooked and loved the message, the experience behind it, and the harmony was really beautiful. I love finding new artists I can really connect with - its one of musics greatest gifts

Thanks, your username is pretty awesome. What an interesting picture… a sunflower on the moon. I’ve been stitching and printing sunflowers on old hats and my shirts recently. Anyway… glad you dig this tune. Caleb and Carolyn (aka The Lowlies) have a ton of songs they’ve written and hum to themselves at their mix of day jobs (carpenter, baker, office cleaner, parent of three). I played a show with them in 2016 or something and became fast friends / an instant fan. Been working with them since to save some nickels, get into a studio and get some of their tunes recorded and shared to the best of our (limited) ability. The first collection will be mailed out in October, and folks can preorder now. New song is streamable every month. Hope you enjoy!

Gems is on a roll. One great artist after another, best channel on KZbin. Radio WV and western af are finding some great ones as well but gems has been flawless for like two years.
