The Lubavitcher Rebbe on Kosher Meditation

The Sages of the Talmud ask: "Why does G-d allow the sun and moon to exist, if they have become objects of idolatry?" They answer: The forces of nature are positive and beneficial; should God destroy His creations only because of the fools who worship them?
This same principle applies to a new trend of the Twentieth Century. Many troubled youth - and adults -- have joined religious cults that practice forms of meditation involving idolatrous rituals. Meditation itself can indeed have the positive effect of calming the nerves and the psyche, but it must divested of anything idolatrous.
Doctors who treat psychological or emotional disorders have a sacred obligation to find a way to utilize the therapeutic benefits of meditation in a Kosher way. When the success of a Kosher meditation method becomes publicized, people attracted by idolatrous methods will be saved.

I've long understood that mindfulness meditation met the Rebbe's criteria. The Rebbe was clear in writing that he was not asking for Jewish meditation, b'farush not , but a science based clinical meditation. But no-one answered the call.

Thank you for this clarification. I have been practicing mindful meditation and it has no idol worship whatsoever. I find I can daven with more kavana afterwards as well as be a bit more present at times during the day

Not when it uses Hindu deities as mantras and initiation ceremonies that cause a monotheist to bow to an altar.... The Rebbe is quite clear about the problem which TM has quite visibly.

You obviously don't know about Hindu deity mantras, but monotheists should not meditate to the name of a deity other than G-d alone.

Once upon a time, in a small village, there was a a group of kind hearted Hasidic people that believed their rebbe to be the Messiah. His followers believed this nonsense and would often sing songs about his greatness. One day, they noticed that the gematria of the numbers on his mailbox were compromised of the numbers 770, which they believed was a sign that he was the long-awaited Messiah. One wise rabbi in the village, however, cautioned them against using this as proof of the rebbe's messianic status. He explained that gematria, the practice of assigning numerical value to letters, and trying to make connections or calculations is a highly subjective practice especially when it was most likely a gentile postal worker employed by the US Postal Service that had assigned those numbers back in the 1920's. The fact that the numbers on the mailbox might have also added up to 613 would also have been a meaningless coincidence at best and most definitely should never be used as a reliable proof. The wise man also pointed out that the fact that the rebbe did not stop his followers from singing a song about him being the Messiah was not a reliable proof either. This would never serve as a proof that world leaders would ever accept and hence no one else either. It was entirely possible that the rebbe did not hear the song or did not understand it's meaning as the song was sung in a loud room with poor acoustics. In conclusion, the wise rabbi urged the followers to be cautious and not to rely on those two flimsy examples as proof of the rebbe's messianic status. Even if there were one million solid proofs, those two would be the last two that should ever be mentioned. For truth is not built on arbitrary coincidences or misunderstandings, but on a deeper and more personal connection with the divine.

Hey three years later you might not see this.. The Rebbe was referring to cults at the time using methods of meditation and practice that involved bowing down to their gurus at times, which is explicitly not allowed according to Jewish Law. The Rebbe wasn't putting down meditation on the contrary the Rebbe was talking about how beautiful it would be if their would be more resources and places and organisation from doctors and Jews, to offer Kosher Meditation, so that people looking for the tranquility and better mental health could benefit from this option. He was also referring to cults which were very popular at the time and a big plague in the US and around the world. Hope this helps anyone.
