Family Tree + Story (so far): Frank and Donna Bell were Gloria's parents according to the video for 'Donna.' Gloria married 'W. Sparks' some time before 1979, which was the year Donna died and also would have been the year that Gloria's son Jimmy was born. Because of the video for 'Life In The City' we can only assume that Jimmy is not W's son. Easy to assume that W and Gloria moved from NYC back to her childhood farm house after her mother Donna died in March of 1979 as Gloria would be 3 months pregnant by that point as well. Due to the assumption that W is not Jimmy's father, perhaps that is why he is always so seemingly okay with just leaving the baby behind as he rushes off with Gloria in all of her drunken moments, which would also explain why Jimmy then grows up to be a bit of a fucked up dad as well as his mother was an alcoholic and his father didn't seem to really care about him. According to the Lumineers website, when Jimmy is older, his wife takes off and creates a new family as well so obviously not having the greatest female roles in his life would also lead to some issues. They also state that Jimmy was a prison guard which could have likely been something bred from probably being taken into some sort of police custody and then turned over to foster care after Gloria and W. got in their accident -- total assumption though on that but one can only assume he was taken away. Junior is Jimmy's son so this video has skipped Jimmy's generation and is showing his son Junior and how he is rebelling as well as a teen as Jimmy - his father - was also an alcoholic. So we have Donna (Bell) = mother of Gloria Sparks (nee, Bell). Gloria = mother of Jimmy (Sparks) Jimmy = son of Gloria and W. (or one-night stand man); father of Junior (Sparks) Junior = son of Jimmy, grandson of Gloria, great-grandson of Donna. Essentially what is happening with the Sparks' story so far is showing how the spark of addiction can really turn into this raging flame and carry on for generations! Thank you for listening to my Ted talk.

This music video kind of shows how smoking weed made me feel better even tho this girl kind off broke me for a while. I believe that the guy in this video is Gloria's son, and he is remembering seeing his mother run out into the field and take her shirt off when he was a baby, which we saw in the "Donna" video. In some weird Freudian way, maybe this is what he wants to see a woman do now, and he envisions his date doing the same. This album seems to be about the ways that patterns of behavior keep passing through generations, and the sins of the father (or mother in this case) keep arising in their children. I can't wait to watch it keep unfolding. These music videos are so special. Please work with this director forever.

I relate to these lyrics. 2017: "I took the poison hoping you feel it too" Brokedown with PTSD and depression. Cut my wrist hoping mother would see how much I was hurting inside. 2018: "I would lie awake hoping you don't lie awake for me" Struggled to rebuild my resources. Most aspects of my life shattered from years of mental illness, I felt so bad and fragile about having nothing. Relationships, work, money, security... It pained me thinking my mother must have shunned me, the way I shunned myself. 2019: "It wasn't easy to be happy for you". I'm more stable than I used to be. Living a more independent life. Half of the time, I'm aware of my co-dependent ways, and how my actions of self-destruction are manipulative. How it would bring me down, stuck in this love-hate relationship game with mother. "If you don't have it then you'll never give it". My mother is a dry well, I would not fill it bawling my eyes out. So yeah, I stop expecting the motherly love that I hoped for. And I find myself happy for her sometimes. Her actions hurt me in the past, they hurt less now. I hated her, I hate her less now. I hope one day I'll have enough love for myself. And be truly calm, and happy for her. For I know I love her.

Still don't know why my brother Ryan could never love me and always felt such abusive negativity towards me. Oh well. My love for him ran out after all he did to me. Poisoned me and strangled me, often. He kept trying to murder me. He couldn't ever just let me make music, and money, and move out and move on with my life. Everyone did that to me, even God. They all orchestrated it, even God. The abuse, the assaults, the murders, the torture... So many crimes against me, with me as the victim, and only a victim, they all orchestrated, even God. While I orchestrated many songs, all on my own, and even an escape route, multiple ones, many times, that all failed. They kept cognitively disabling me and physically disabling me. I'm The Lumineers, and many other musicians and bands. Many. All alone. Thanks for always ruining my life, Ryan, God, and all the others. Don't relate to it. No sense or rationale or intelligence to it, any of it. Senseless violence and senseless destruction. Well, Hell's real, and I'll be seeing you there, from my position as one in Heaven, always in Heaven. While you're always in Hell, or Oblivion. You never make it to Heaven. Ever. Only I do. Easily. Easy for me.

Ryan is the "dame in distress" as he put it. I was the daemon distress. Lol. God is handing Everything and All over to me soon, due to God's trespasses against many, against all, against me. I'm God's replacement.

Ryan admits to wrapping my neck and the noose... And he called what was mine his. Never belonged to him. Ever. He's never been much to me. Just an abuser, and a rapist. They never knew how little others thought of them, and how little others really cared about them, on account of how they treat... Everyone.

I think the whole point of including melodies from their previous album and mimicking scenes from other videos is to illustrate that we all go through the ups and downs of life. Each character's experience bleeds into others spanning generations, leaving the listener confused. But it isn't meant to be figured out because the ultimate theme is that there is nothing new under the sun, and this is the human condition. We love, we ache, we desire.
@shanebido23274 жыл бұрын
Is it selfish for me to wish that the Lumineers will stay underrated as it is? Because I want to be possesive by their greatness and at the same time want people to know how amazing they are! I am so so happy that the Lumineers have started highlighting how addiction has such a devastating effect on both families and communities, I myself was caught in the grip of this pernicious deadly disease, caused a whole lot of hurt and pain and worry to my family and loved ones, stole a whole load of their peace of mind and contentment. for 30 years a long long time, never ever thought there was a way out lived a life of hopelessness emotionally null and void. drugs were the solution to all of my problems, finally through emotional pain i sought another way and found freedom from active addiction. 851 days clean today. THANKFULLY WE DO RECOVER. cant wait to see the Lumineers play on the 22nd November in Glasgow. (so much more than a concert to me its a celebration of my clean time) their music got me through a lot of rough nights and helped me cope with a lot of guilt and shame i was facing made it a bit easier and for that I'm truly a grateful recovering addict. thank you from the bottom of my heart Wesley Jeremiah and Neylah.

Gloria's father died in 1954, mother in 1979. When Gloria's mother was near death, she and her husband "W" came to NY or Jersey from a village or another city (or already lived). In Life In The City, Cleopatra is mentioned. Maybe The Lumineers song about Cleopatra, who drives a taxi, has to do with "W"? He proposed to her, but Cleopatra did not agree with the death of her father and then "W" left. Their possible future is reflected in Sleep On The Floor. Later somewhere on the trip, "W" met Gloria and he needed to drown out the pain, so now they are together. But Gloria is an alcoholic and a drug addict. She blames her mother Donna for her failures for telling Gloria that she is ordinary. As I understand it, Donna herself was the eldest of seven children in her family, so we can assume that she herself was not special in the opinion of her parents, because she had to take care of her brothers and sisters. In a large family, it is difficult to pay attention to any one child. Subsequently, Donna raised Gloria as well as raised her. In general, this snowball led to the fact that Gloria broke and turned off the road and began to sniff coke and drink. However, she dreams of a beautiful life in New York, parties, carefree, freedom. She is burdened by life with a man whom she possibly does not like. She became pregnant from a strange man and gave birth to a baby (Jimmy), which most likely she did not even need. She has a maternal instinct only for drinking, and for the child only attachment. Jimmy, remembers that his mother is a drunk. Most likely he was a typical loser who complained about fate. Junior is the son of Jimmy. The father told him about his family and he led the same lifestyle as his mother. Junior is as loser as his father, who sometimes beats him. But I think Junior wants to get out of this vicious family circle. Let's see what he does.

Jackson Joseph i mean we know a lot abt all of the videos. like this is Gloria’s grandson, we can presume that girl in the car is imaginary, we know the whole album focuses on a family through three generations struggling with addiction. but like i feel you lmao. i cant wait for it to all be out and we can piece together everything

I think the woman represents the addiction that taunts/follows/tempts the Sparks family. And that the song is about the child of an addict watching their parent maybe getting their life on track and feeling bitter about the damage they caused in the past. They want to lash out and hurt them so they try to hurt themselves to get at their parent. but at the same time they are conflicted because they don’t want their parents life to be trash. They want to be better but it’s hard being happy for someone who fucked your life up so bad. And as an aside i think it’s important to note that if the woman represents addiction Junior makes out with her but he doesn’t go all the way and when she walks away and sinks into the field he doesn’t follow her. Which may represent Junior NOT following the path of addiction like his family.

A lot is unconfirmed, as far as I know. Donna is the mother of Gloria who died. Gloria and her husband's son is Jimmy. A lot of people think Junior is Gloria's husband, but he could also be the man she had an affair with or (my theory) another son we don't know about who died (she hates the names of people who died). Gloria is the central character, although the songs have been sung from I believe her husband's perspective. "You" has always referred to Gloria thus far.
