@@dawsonhobbs3143 I don't think any of their albums were rushed at all, which I think is a big reason why they are so successful. They stress the smallest of details. I've just seen countless other artists lose the quality because they start cranking out songs and albums. Not saying they did or will, just saying I hope that's never the case because their work is worth the wait.

These are the kind of videos that I would imagine for songs growing up like Tori Amos or A Perfect Circle songs then they go and make some trashy video like they did for the Outsiders. something I never would have pictured for the song. Of course I am trashing other bands videos now. This video is amazing. I've watched it a million times. Love the series of videos with the same actors and themes. Agree, they are visually stunning and fit the songs perfectly. Bravo!!

I love the parallels between this video and Part 3 (Gloria). Both Junior and Gloria are being shown kicking the door in and rushing to the car and carrying their loved ones to save them from a head injury. Also the fact, that they both end up leaving the person they wanted to save in the car, because of the police arriving, running away to the field to save themselves. Beautiful and creative way to end the amazing story of the Sparks family tree.

i don't believe gloria's husband was her loved one judging by how she left him and jimmy. i see the opposite: gloria running away from the mess she made and junior really carrying his loved one, the person who besides it all, was there for him and tried to raise him. and also, she didn't even think twice before leaving her husband, while jimmy is begging junior to go and live his life.

@@pamelaturini7808 I trully believe that Gloria loved her husband, but she knew the troubles that she cause to him. When the car crashed, the first thing she do is to see if him was alive, and when she sees the cops coming, she knew that he would be fine, and then she left, not because she don't loved him, but because she didn't want to cause any more troubles to him

Yes! And the symbolism of him burning the piano, he was breaking the generational curse. The only reason Junior left Jimmy was because he said "its ok, go" Gloria left her husband out of selfishness, Junior was ready to start over. Jimmy wanted better for him, and let him go, the exact opposite of what his mother did.. Gloria's husband reached his hand and wanted her to stay in the same cycle.

I am going to add a comment which is tough but very real. This song is very much makes me think of my daughter. I am sure no one will read this but this is our story. My daughter was born with stage 4 neuroblastoma stage 4 cancer. After 6 years of chemo and in and out of the hospital multiple times she survived thank God. Then fast forward 13 years her mom dies of breast cancer and she is filled with emotion. She can’t leave her room in fear that she will certainly die of Covid. She stays in her room not going to school not joining the v real world for 2 years. Her dad sends her to a psychologist and he prescribes mother meds. She feels that ever cough she well die every stomach ache will die and her only hope her only friend is her dad who works with her through the anxiety and the many sleepless nights. So when I hear this song as the dad I think of b this song it really fits. Sad but true. Life can be crazy sometimes. Like is said I am sure no one will read this or believe me but it is real. Just a family deaking with real world problems.

I love how deeply human these characters are. The Lumineers didn't just paint these 'addicts' as heartless monsters not worthy of empathy, but as flawed yet believable people like you and me. In Gloria, despite the addiction that is quickly consuming her whole being...we still see the love she has for baby Jimmy...the way Gloria looks at him as she holds him...the way she reaches for him when she gets home from the hospital... We also see how much love her husband has for her despite her alcoholism. Fast forward and Jimmy clearly loves his son...despite Jimmy's bad behaviour, he worked to support Junior, he stuck around when Bonnie left...he did his best despite addiction creeping in on him bit by bit as the years went on (starting with the gambling to pay for medical care for Junior...then the alcohol...the drugs...associating with dangerous people...)...he still managed to hold it together long enough for Junior to reach adulthood. Finally in Salt and the Sea, we see Jimmy tell his son to run as the police close in...despite his potentially fatal head wound that needs medical attention he sends Junior off (hopefully to freedom)... In Leader of the Landslide, Junior looks frustrated and completely over the kinds of people his father associates with...but in April and Salt and the Sea we see that Junior loves his Dad and maybe believes that if he steals the money, pays off the debts then maybe this brush with death will finally be enough to straighten Jimmy out... ...sadly there's no happy ending...but real life isn't a Disney movie...

If you have ever gone through the dark night of the soul, suffered with illness, ptsd, depression, addiction, and other similar conditions, you know that there are two parts of you. The dark and the light. The good days and the bad. This song seems to me that it's about your light side talking to your darkside.

I love how informative and thoughtful all the comments here are ,but here are a few things I couldn't keep to myself There's a cinematic parallel drawn between this video and the one released for the song ' Gloria ' wherein Gloria's husband rushes out to take her to the hospital and leaves Jimmy behind simply because he isn't his child. We observe Jimmy being abandoned by various important people in his life ,his parents being the first one and then his wife bonnie , here he is again shown alone. Jimmy sits in the car alone like the abandoned child he once was. Even though the whole family's story is upsetting but the person my heart aches the most for is - Jimmy .

Prophetic words since in hindsight it 100% summed up her journey with cancer and it taking her from us later that year. I think it's amazing how history made us think that the generational suffering of this family was related to the piano (which actually represented Glória), and when Junior burns him, we think that he is changing the family's direction, which is not the case . Because generational suffering begins in Donna (Mother of Glória), and the representation of this was never the piano, but the house, which was built by Donna (Construction focused on video 1). Realize that the house is always involved with family problems, all generations have never abandoned it. If one of them broke the cycle, semiotics would be related to leaving home, which does not happen. In the end, Junior only burns the piano, but returns home, ending up as Glória.

From the prospective of a man who was once the lover of a woman in a turbulent relationship. The two were passionate and they gave each other amazing amounts of comfort and strength. But they ended abruptly and he’s hurt badly. But his feelings never changed. Hers did. She gave up on him and turned her back on what they had. She tries to move on from what they had but her feelings linger and he knows it. He reflects on his pain and their relationship. Verse 1&2 reflect on their time together. Chorus and Verse 3 reflect on their time apart. Verse 1: She goes on acting like her significant other saved her and brought her out of her “darkness”. But it was his love that saved her. He held her in the night and comforted her on the “back staircase” while she was alone and broken. “All the destruction and all the disease” was her current relationship that she couldn’t escape. She couldn’t hide it from him but he was there for her when she needed him. Verse 2: She was often broken and “all alone scared” needing him. He wanted to console her but only come see her if she was alone. She wasn’t. But she didn’t care if he was “on the bed laying awake”. She would sacrifice everything to see him. Even if it meant being tortured, “as she prayed he’d leave her alone”. But he’ll come to her anyway. “He’ll let the darkness swallow him whole” as he goes into the shadows, silently. Because he needs her to know how much he would risk to be with her. Chorus: Things have changed between the two. She is no longer needing him like she used to and he is going through withdrawals. Wondering why. He reaches out to her for help, because now he is the one that is hurting and broken. When he turns to her she is cold and “wrote him off”. Unlike he did to her. He was left to “rock in his filth” as his feelings were his mess to deal with alone. But “from the destruction” of them and “out of the flames” he will still take the fall and be the “villain”. But he just needs her to say it. To say that he is the bad guy and at least acknowledge him. Last Chorus: This is a plea. He is finally telling her that he will give anything to be with her again. Even in the daylight (even after the darkness swallowed him). “There” he will be “like an old enemy”. This is the way she sees him now. As a figure in her past. An enemy. But he will remain the bad guy as long as it takes to make her realize what they had and how powerful it was. Then, and only the will she realize that they are “Like the salt and the sea”. One and the same. Inseparable.

The Sparks are the cycle of addiction through a family. We are all doomed to relive the mistakes and faults of our ancestors, whether we like it or not. But they also show the constant impact of family relationships. No matter how much Junior hated Jimmy for putting him through everything, he still stole all the money to protect them and then tried to take his father with him to run away. Eventually, though, he did exactly what Jimmy had done in the past - just trying to help his family but making terrible mistakes in the process. And finally ends up becoming Gloria, pulling Jimmy out the door and eventually sprinting through the field to get away from his mistakes.

I shouldve been listening to your music a long time ago. I heard your song from a commercial. It really touched my heart. This is such a beautiful song. I wont be set in my ways anymore there are new bands worth a listen. And you have a new fan who is going to explore your music. Im 55 heard a lot of great music and this is so good so honest just pure music from a beautiful soul. I apologise for not at least giving your music a try sooner. I almost missed hearing your beautiful music. Dont want to be an old grump anymore. I love your lyrics so sorry to hear of your loss that inspired this song. Youve got a really good heart and a great God given gift.

I found them through the same commercial I'm assuming. Have watched all 10 songs in the series since. Such a meaningful and touching story, but also so sad. I truly hope this brings even more awareness to this problem that plagues so many. I know it opened my eyes.

@@zaxsmith99 It seemed for a time music lost its soul. I thought gone were the days when lyrics actually said something instead of being filled with just random words because they rhymed. Its just great to hear that there are bands returning to putting some thought into saying something meaningful not just choosing words because they only sound good.

it took damn near a year but I finally noticed that the Sparks' toxic cycle of alcoholism, self destruction and strained family ties is further emphasized by the fact that basically some songs on III could be interpreted as virtually any family member talking to/ about another. Leader of the landslide could be Gloria talking about Donna, Jimmy talking about Gloria or Junior talking about Jimmy. There's other examples that im not quite sure of since they could just as easily be from an omniscient POV

Finally an end to the sparks saga. This album was a whole emotional experience which is not usually seen in many bands or musicians albums .these guys brought images and music together to form such intense feeling of pain, remorse and catharsis .it was a delightful pleasure to listen and watch each song of this album.

I first heard this, completely unprepared & not knowing how it would haunt me, in traffic, half - distracted in the beginning, but suddenly riveted & mesmerized by the way it intimately grabbed ahold of me. Most songs that get us emotional are about love, or it's loss, occasionally family & the memories that take residence in the halls of our head. Few songs ever affect us in a way that is wholly ourself. I was once again driving alone when I heard it for a second time & my face flooded with tears, unrelenting to the point of near-blindness. I cannot recall ever crying so forcefully while listening to music. This entire song is all that I feel from the inside out, I have literally lived this song word by painful word .

Addiction is one of the hardest things life can deal us, whether its us directly affected or a friend/family member. Yet it can also be the greatest accomplishment in ones life when you conquer it and remain clean. 4½ years clean for me...you can do it too...ONE DAY AT A TIME! Beautiful song by the way...

I wasn't expecting this but happy I listened. This song was something I can relate to for sure. My brother died of an overdose and I just remember tracking him down and making him come over and have dinner with me and letting him live with me while fighting the disease. Everyone stepped back and pretty much bounced but my heart was different. Great song, hits home for sure. I love everything they put out.

I know it isn't the context of the video or the story but i felt compelled to leave this here. Because of the struggle I got going on, I'd be scared shitless to miss the shot and wake up with a head injury like Pops here. I wake up to find a loved one made a mistake, came to get my help, finding me half dead, they frantically try to help when it's been too late for far too long and they end up getting caught up trying to waste precious time saving me. No gains, no glory, just running away. Forever. Keeps me from doing what I've thought of doing for 23 years. I *have* to be there to fall on the sword. Whatever it may be. If it can save or spare a loved one, I'd much rather it be that way.

Say what you will about the obvious parallels in the end of the video, but truth be told, it is the opening shot ---- the family portrait where everyone is so distant and aloof from one another, where there are no hugs, no obvious affection, no "closeness" at all ---- that gets me every time. You have Gloria in the wicker chair, the mother from "Leader of the Landslide". You have all the other characters... generations apart.... and so alone. We never liked family photos in my family. 5 children.... and we could never agree on anything, including who stands where for a simple picture. The opening shot reminds me of those attempts, and how we finally just gave up taking family pictures. It's been 15 years now since the last one, and even something as simple as Facebook drives the problems back and forth, as though they never stopped with the ebb and flow of time.
