What I love about The Lumineers is they have a mystery tucked within every song. I've listened to their songs thousands of times, and I still pick up on a new hidden meaning or message every once in a while. The songs mold to fit everyone 's different lives and stories, which makes it fun to read how everyone interprets each one.

From the million love songs out there this is the only one that hits me hard. It's about unconditional love and how even if it hurts it's still better than nothing, and well, I'm a very cold person who has never loved that way and it makes me sad to think what I'm missing, and even if I wanted to I can't just love someone like that, I'd rather feel nothing than deal with the pain. I see many people here because they relate on loving someone who didn't love them back and all I can say is: Love is NOT a mistake, don't regret loving, love is the only thing that can make you grow, whether it brings you happiness or pain, just know life is all about ups and downs and nothing lasts forever, so if you're in a good place, cherish it, and if not, know it is not forever.

@@eyebelieve3 I literally came to the comments to find if anyone felt the same. I was literally talking to a friend earlier today about this exact thing. I mean its probably the most cliche thing in the world but its the bad times the make the good times so good. I mean in that sense life is kind of like a game of poker. Sometimes in life you are delt a shitty hand, and sometimes you are delt a lucky hand. You know some people are just born with a shitty hand, and yah that sucks and feels terrible every time, but I promise your hand doesn't really matter. What matters is what you do with it. Sometimes you have to just know when to take the hit, other times you take what you have to learn. Trust me the more time you spending learning with yourself means you will be in the best position you possibly can be when the right hand is given to you. This isn't supposed to make life easy, but life would not be fun if it was easy (lol yes I am a walking cliche at this point), so while life is down just keep doing the best you can and I will do the same. I can't tell you when or where it will get better but it will.

So I used to think this song was about unrequited love. Basically loving someone but not being loved back but the more I listened to it I feel like it's about ones ability to keep loving after they have been hurt over and over again. So the song is about love itself and the journey to find it. True love is one of the hardest things to find in life if you find it you are definitely one of the lucky ones. some people never find it. the more love fails you the more apprehensive you are to love again. Maybe I'm wrong but it made more sense to me when I started thinking about it that way. Keep your head up y'all ❤❤❤

Did anyone else well up with tears when the little girl pulled the ring off of her mother's finger? This is a beautiful, inspirational song...but I am so glad I didn't hear it until now. The pain still lingers...although it has dwindled. A year ago I couldn't have watched this without openly bawling. My heart and sympathies go out to those still in the midst of that sting of a divorce. With a child or children involved, there is simply no explanation of the devastating emotions one could convey without having been there. You think to yourself that nothing could possibly hurt you as bad as you're hurt when it happens until you see it in the eyes of your child and learn what its like to feel pain for someone else. The divorce is bad enough...but when you see your ex use the kids as a pawn...I'm sure those of you familiar with the scenario understand.

"It's better to feel pain than nothing at all; the opposite of LOVE is INDIFFERENCE". I have heard this song many, many times over the years (I've played it myself, I was a bartender for 10 years so others played it many times, I play it still obviously) and somehow missed that little truth nugget in amongst the pleasant melody. Love and hate are sister emotions, if you want to leave someone behind become indifferent. I know this doesn't suit well with everyone but forgive those who hurt you. Not for them, but for you. You forgive them yourself and they fade away.... it's a nice feeling.

This song hits me so hard every time i hear it, it's just so hard to explain. I knew it basically since my school years, listening to The Lumineers briefly from time to time and simply moving on to other bands and genres. I came back to this band and this song after a terrible break-up caused by me, my problems and what I did to my then-girlfriend for about a year, a friend for about four. I listened to it time and time again throughout several months alone, working on myself, bettering my mental status and overall mental health that caused all the problems. A year passed, fate made us cross our paths and come closer again, heal our scars and become a pair once again. Nearly two years from then, I'm listening to the song in our house, we're a few months away from our wedding and expecting a baby. Coming back to such hard-hitting songs makes you realise how far you've come and how many struggles you endured because of - and for this stubborn love. Stay strong Friends. It will be better one day - if you believe it and work towards it, eventually it's gonna happen.

I have never felt so much pain in my life. I was crying for a month straight. This song came up on the radio... my pain went away little by little everyday I listened to this song. It gave me hope again, after he got back from Afghanistan. I went off to college, and he drove from Texas to see me in North Dakota...he surprised me. He asked me to marry him. I said no at first, because I was so angry with him...but I stilled loved him.. 4 days later he asked me again, and I said yes. This song really is amazing!! It will never get old.

My love for 'stubborn love' and these amazing artists is endless. I hope they're always happy and content wherever they are and will be. The Lumineers songs and videos tell such beautiful, heart-wrenching stories. So beautifully written, well-shot, edited, acted, and choreographed, and expertly intricately intertwined with one another. I would go so far as to venture that Stubborn Love is somehow part of the whole Sleep On The Floor/Angela/Ophelia narrative and that the Lums are just telling us one big epic poem. I would love that. Plus the fact that Neyla Pekarek is absolutely stunning.

I lost a dear friend in the spring and finally came to understand the line, its better to feel pain, than nothing at all. Its better to have loved and lost than never known love at all. So the loss and the grief are okay because they mean I had the chance to experience something valuable to begin with

The fact that my mother (a teenage mother of me when her and my father were only 17) used to blast this song with me while we drove to or from goodwill and her mother’s house (where we lived) and it’s now the anthem of my life hits hard. She would always cry when it played and keep singing despite that, I always keep singing no matter how hard I cry when I hear this now. I love her, even if she had some extreme faults, she did her best, and she still does. Amazing young woman, and I’ll always love her no matter how much she’s hurt my heart❤

If the little girl had not smiled at the end, I would have cried the rest of the day..... It is the natural resilience of youth that makes us overcome problems as a child we could never cope with as an adult.
@CntthnkO1511 жыл бұрын
Who teaches you this shit? That is just utterly wrong. There is, in essence, zero difference between children and adults. Especially in their ability to comprehend and apply logic and emotion. Age is, literally, nothing but a number. And second of all, this is a fictional story, has nothing to do with reality. This type of dramatic shit doesn't happen, nothing you see on TV happens, not in the way it is portrayed, ever.
@luvorh8111 жыл бұрын
CntthnkO15 Except that there are big differences between children and adults especially in their ability to comprehend and apply logic and emotion. The brain doesn't fully develop until the early to mid 20's. Particularly the prefrontal cortex which controls judgement reasoning and impulse. Not to say that there aren't exceptions but age does have a littttle bit to do with it. And secondly yes, this is a story used by an artist to relate a certain emotion with a song. Does that make it unrealistically dramatic? No. The reason you feel real life isn't like television is because television shows us everything that is important to the plot line of the story. People in real life are too distracted by their daily lives and all of society to see what is truly important. They don't pick up on the important things thus they don't see the beauty.

Sorry folks, apparently I hit some bed rock here. Your answers simply show that I am right. While you obviously do not overcome your dicorce, your kids most ceratinly did. I thank the universe for this song and healing video. We all feel lost sometimes, maybe most of the time, as the little girl we feel the fear of facing things that we don't know how to deal with, maybe sometimes bigger than us, and we can't chage, and we feel like wanting someone to take care of us, but as the little girl, just open the window that is blocking the air and the joy, the wind will relieve your pain and you're gonna be allright. Just keep your head up love.

This video hits me in a different way. My Daughters mom pretty much just left in the middle of the night. Literally. The first thing I did after seeing all her stuff gone in the middle of the night, while I was at work; was to hug and cry with my daughter. I have been the single Mom/Dad for the past 4 years going on, since. I keep thinking and wondering if maybe I was way too lax in our relationship after 20+ years, or did too many wrong things. I never cheated, did drugs or whatever. Just had some real bad timing and luck go away. It's taken me years to start to climb out of a major depression about it all. So, a song like this relates in a different way. I've done everything in my power to keep HER "head up". Lets just say it's been a real struggle. - - - My head? - Idk if it'll ever be back "up". :-/

I am confused by the comments I have read to this video lol... I don't think it has anything to do with beauty, or a mom and daughter... My opinion is that the interpretation of the song is that life changes (her mom and dad splitting), there are always bumps in the road (the car accident) but there are always people going through similar things and you are never alone (couple arguing)... if you just look out the window you will see amazing things though, from other people that is :) Keep your head up... Love is worth the risk and life is worth the hurt... We all are special and beautiful and it is a reminder of struggles and our triumphs through those struggles... Just my opinioin, at least...

My dad passed away December 2020, he was a fan of the Lumineers pretty early on. One thing I can remember him doing years earlier was sending me this music video and saying something along the lines of “no matter what happens I will always love you”. Of course being in my preteens I did not really think much of it. He and my mom did not have the best relationship but they tried for my sister and I. Almost two whole years since he has passed and I can’t even remember how long since that text message, but listening to this just fills me with this indescribable feeling. One that is painful and sends aches all over me, but slowly turns into a weird sense of comfort.

The sensations that the visuals provide is undeniably the same the song provides you. The feeling of discovering the unknown, the feeling behind going forward despite all your fears, the feeling behind starting something new. This is one of those very well produced clips where every time you listen to the song, you remember the music video and vice-versa... The perfect combination of sensations that how sound waves and visual frames can instigate you deeply.

Stay strong men. Showing your emotions means you are strong. Running from them is easier at first but not in the long run. That leads to drugs/alcohol to cover it up. Tonito Guerra you could it have worse. I deal with pain when I see others who are suffering more than me. Put it in perspective...

Huasteco09 I understand, I pity people who cause pain to others, I feel as though they are alone themselves and just want attention so that's the only way they can get it.

How do I keep my head up when I’m listening to this song thinking about when my mom and dad were married, living in the house I loved, everything falls apart, and here, 12.5.19 looking back at the life I missed having. Jesus Christ this is a good song and gives in great memories.

I feel like the music video explains itself : The little girl watches the progression of her parents relationship through the ride as each scene of strangers represents a stage that her parents went through, the car crash is the crash of their love, the end of it, the divorce.You can see she gets it, as she takes off her mothers ring, to set her free from the weight of a failed marriage, now she's the one carrying it. She just wants to understand and now that she did and that they're out of the city that is a metaphore for the past she is finally happy and ready to start again.

The lyrics of this song is the story of my first love, 9 years of up and downs, then 6 years of darkness and hurt. It's been 15 years, i still love her but im finally free to walk my own path without her.

Some songs will just ripple across the cosmos forever. To relate, feel, and understand what it is to live and be apart of the bigger picture of life. I have loved and know what it means. It’s said it will be better but I still feel that love
