The Luxuary Ikoyi, Nigeria, is a video that brings you to Ikoyi and Obalende, to discover the history of these two places as well as the present development. Starting from Victoria Island Eko roundabout, we will fast reach Falomo bridge to cross to Ikoyi.
From Awolowo , to Keffi, and Obalende, you'll visit the place till Bourdillon or Alexander road. You 'll maybe learn how the island was created and drained in some part with a canal...
I hope you will like this dive into present and past developments of the the Famous Ikoyi neighbourhood in Lagos Nigeria.

Nice video. it has changed a fair bit from when we lived in Ikoyi after my parents took us back to the home country from the UK. At the time it was still very heavily colonial in architecture and very much a government residential area for senior civil servants. It was exclusively old fashioned too with very few new builds and very large gardens, some with tennis courts and lawns that backed on to the lagoon. It used to be very different from Victoria Island where I lived while at the law school. I remember crossing the five coweries’ creek from Victoria island to ikoyi and you could see the difference of between both islands. VI was wealthy in a brash new way while ikoyi had air of old worldliness. What has really changed is VI becoming the city’s new downtown district , a role that has traditionally belonged to Lagos Island since colonial times, while VI was mainly residential and diplomatic, with large 5 star hotels. The overhead pow elites in Lagos lends a generally shabbiness to the city in my opinion

Like you, I recall a more “colonial” Ikoyi from my childhood (family relocated from the US to Luggard Ave). Memories! ❤️ I also agree with your last point. That’s less of an issue in the newer parts of Lagos, like Lekki, Banana Island, Eko Atlantic, etc. Hopefully, it will be abated in the older parts of the city over the next few years with the full implementation of the “One Dig” Law.

I agree.... And even though the names of some of the key roads like what was 1st and 2nd avenue back then, buildings like Ikoyi hotel and even the noble looks of Ikoyi club-1938, on what was Mulliner Rd, all these erratic so called progressive changes are a kind of liberation of disaster from what was a really beautiful Ikoyi to a now very shabby commercial looking conjoined island.... We, who were a witness to that great look of say the 70s well into the end of the 80s into the early 90s, the current outlook proves Ikoyi is a place scrambled for by people trying to prove they can live in a nice place because they have a bit of cash... So the developments of recent have no relationship with the DNA of Ikoyi. A lost opportunity.

Lugard Avenue - such an old memory hacking back to the 80s, hanging out in the quiet suburbs with all the green gardens of old colonial styled imposing homes everywhere one looked..looks awfully different, with barely any soul with Lego like structures erected literally against the skylines now. Might as well be in the outskirts of London, like Croydon - which is a rather awful place to visit..

Obalende has the potential to develop an alternative bohemian arty vibe to ikoyi and VI with hip bars, cafes and restaurants. The government just needs to invest in tidying up the streets and giving out business permits. It could bring new businesses to the area and generate more employment prospects and improve residents income levels in the area

Another very interesting, fascinating ride! Even though the sky was overcast I still enjoyed riding with you. As usual the historical notes, street names and other notes added to my enjoyment. The time and money you invest to present high quality travel vlogs is not taken for granted. The font you use in the foot notes is easy on the eyes, pleasant to look at and non distracting. There is a stark contrast between the habitations of the 'haves and the have nots' of Lagos. I have also noticed these same differences here in the urban centers of the America's. Municipal services and upkeep in areas where the the 'haves' reside are provided daily while these same services are limited or not provided at all in areas where the 'have nots' reside. Of course this situation is not new, but it has been going on far too long to keep ignoring it. Where is the humanity in this? I apologize for going off on something I feel so strongly about. Allow me to return to the positive. Highlights for me of our ride were the occasional joggers, construction workers, tractors, dump trucks, cement trucks and people in orange overhauls sweeping and picking up trash. I chuckled at your comment about being hungry again so soon after eating breakfast and then eating again at 9:00am. I was delighted to see you stop to buy some food and assist the vendor put her basket on her head. By the way, does harmattan mean fog, smog or clouds?

thanks a lot for your comment ! the font i am using and the effect as well as the historical captions i put there, are eally time consuing. I could have uloaded the raw footage, but i really want to add value. then i am glad you appreciate, i think i worked around 30 hours for that video.. then 30 hours encoding...; etc... The Harmattan is a kind is a kind of smog with dust and sand, it comes from sahara desert. the sand and dust is pushed in western africa during the season we use to call harmattan. i have a basic knowledge about it i wish i could answer deeper...

Ludo please get access and do drive-throughs of the residential estates/condos. The newer residences look way better than old glorified Ikoyi. Ikoyi is absurdly expensive due to old fame. Lekki Phase 1 probably has a better road network. Another thing do the neighbourhoods and inner estates of Chevron Drive, Agungi, Osapa London, VGC, and on the mainland, a drive through of inside Magodo GRA, Gbagada GRA, Ikeja GRA and other GRAs Estates will be nice. I was born at Fowler Road in Ikoyi, almost opposite Ikoyi hôtel. TRUE ÔMO EKO. My Parish catholic church of Assumption at Falomo round-about. Ikoyi club and Golf Club was my territory. I met top Nigerian Police, military, officiers, politicians, governors, businessmen, foreign Embassies. I've not been there for over forty years. I'm Imo State. I live in France/Switzerland. I love Lagos inspite of her trafic jams and hustle life. Eko boys own Nigeria no matter their tribe. Obalende, Okaysuna, Idimotta, Yaba, Idioro, Surulere, Victoria Island where I worked for an international multinational. Lagos, oya how on dey ?

I know yes there are parts like this to Nigeria or any part of Africa.. but it seems to me ludo liu seems to only show the negative areas or really bad areas.. we rarely get to eee the really nice developed places of Lagos.. which their many nice and lovely areas to it. But he continuously shows the negative side… which proves what ever stereotypes they think of Africa is true

@@Ludo_Liu Here in Atlanta USA even walking on a bad sidewalk or no sidewalk at all is safer than walking in the road. Traffic moves fast and drivers are not used to seeing people in the road except at designated crossing walks or intersections. People get run over and killied a lot here even with them being much safer about walking in roads than Nigerians. Atlanta has many bad sidewalks too. But you NEVER want to just walk up and down a busy street lane here like those people were. Unless you are just tired of living that is. Lol

One thing that surprises me about many African cities is the importance given to the car, offering it first class roads, and the contempt for pedestrians, who have to invade the space of cars because they cannot walk on the sidewalks. They would have to demand good spaces for walking.

The sidewalks don't look very user friendly--physically challenged people will have problems using them---then the absence of trees to beautiful and provides shades on the sidewalks---and the open drainage system makes Ikoyi , Obalende and Victoria Island look like ghettos when compared to Canadian cities like in the Greater Toronto Area and Metro Vancouver.
