At the brussels defile i once met an M41 bulldog driver of the Belgian army, IIRC 1st lancers unit. They had finished training with the M41, just delivered to the army and one of the regimental officers gave them the order to do a bit of speed test, see how fast they could go on road both paved and unpaved. They clocked a speed of 68 km/h when suddently, a load crack was heard and the tank violently swayed to the left. They were thrown all around the tank. As the tank stopped, they checked outside and saw the entire left track was gone. Threw entirely off. The rear sprocket was also damaged. As he looked at his crew, both the gunner & loader had pissed themselves (poor Blue'kes). It was later found that the mechanics had incorrectly fastened the track with the wrong pin. He was sad he could never achieved "top speed" but he Really loved the M41. I hope he is still alive, André was his name.

I've always had a soft spot for these because my father was a crewman in an M41A1 from 1954-56 in Alaska. They took the turret off one and got it up to 55mph with plentry of throttle left before the driver (sensibly) chckened out.

I'm going to keep pushing for it, you cover a lot of the tragedy of the Great Lakes, but how about the Megaprojects that are the modern international shipping industry that moves billions of tons of cargo across the US, Canada, and many international destinations? 13 1000ft ships, the Soo Locks, the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge, the monstrous loading docks at more than two dozen harbors, a multitude of ice breakers, and hundreds of auxiliary support vessels, it could even be a series of Megaprojects videos to cover all of it.

I still think you should take a swing at the Allies two lumbering beasts that never saw battle. The British A-39 "Tortoise" Heavy Assault Tank and the US T28 Super Heavy Tank/ T95 Gun Motor Carriage. Both were built for breaking through the Siegfried Line. Both were slow moving, turret-less, big-gunned, and heavy front armored behemoths. Both were too late to the party to actually do their one job. One of those two has a very interesting after war story. I think you would have a fun time researching them and doing a video on them together. One or the other, those would be too short of videos. I'd say do both of them together since they essentially were the UK's version and the US's version of the solution to a problem that wasn't really there to begin with. To begin with, and hopefully to get you interested in these, both of these were developed to at least a functioning prototype stage and if both had made it to full production and onto the battlefield, they would have been the heaviest armored vehicles ever to be used in combat. That currently is held by the JagTiger at 71 tons. So these two weighed in at more than that and they were considered to be the great ideas at the time.

The Republic of China Army (Taiwanese Army), modified their M41 with a new Detroit Diesel 8V-71T diesel engine, enabling the tank to reach speeds of up to 72 km/h (44.7 mph) and increasing its range to 450 km (279 miles). The turret was altered to carry a Taiwanese-manufactured variant of the M32 known as the M32K1, as well as a co-axial Type 74 (FN MAG) general purpose machine gun. The M32K1 has a extractor and a different muzzle brake, and has been upgraded with thermal imaging sights.

Good Presentation. I have been in a wrecked Bull Dog used for Testing various Anti-Tank and improvised explosive devices. I am not a fan of Light Tanks but if used with proper coordination the M41 family could be useful for direct fire support for infantry and recon elements. I have two track sections from a M42 Duster I picked up at Ft. Bliss. As a reservist I trained 19D Cav scouts.

Seen one of these in South Korea sitting next to a group of older M1 Abrams. I recognized it instantly and asked the motor pool HQ if I could take a closer look. Small South Korean man came out with me and removed the padlock. It was so damn cool messing around with it. I really wanted to drive it but I couldn't. It wasn't an active piece and was mostly just sitting their as a last resort kind of tank. From what I know it's still sitting out there waiting for it's time to hit full speed and be a hell raiser.

Only one criticism, the M-551’s in the 82nd Airborne Division were critical assets, the army completely screwed the paratroopers by inexplicably not canceling their turn in after its replacement, the AGS was cancelled! There were thousands of pissed of paratroopers who had relied on these Sheridan’s in Panama & Saudi Arabia for armored support…suddenly, they were going to face jumping into bad guy territory with NO ARMOR.

The M41 was also the last US tank to be built for the 'light tank' category. And it was also to have the bow gun deleted. One of the biggest complaints was that the inside was considered cramped for American tank crews, but South Vietnamese found them to be just the right size. The M41 could actually defeat T-55 tanks by shooting through the side armor.
@terrynewsome6698

You really miss represent the spring offensive, were the arvn forces won, most of the m-41 killed two to three times their number in t-55 and pt-76, and only one arvn brigade was equipped with m-48 Pattons by 1972. The tank the m-41 were most likely to face the equally light pt-76, which it was quite effective at killing. Was it amazing no, but it was more impressive than what you showed here.

You keep comparing the M-41, a light tank, to M-60's/T-54s'/T-55s, which are medium tanks. They are intended for different roles and mission. A 20-25 ton tank is not going to have the same armor protection or firepower as a medium tank which weights 30-50 tons. A light tank is not designed to go toe to toe with a medium tank, yet it sounds like the M-41 did pretty well against the T-55s and PT-76s in Laos.

Yes, they were intended for different roles and missions. Thing is that's not how they were used. In war you use WHAT is available, WHEN it's available.
@Bob_Betker
@Bob_Betker 2 жыл бұрын
@@zaco-km3su I understand that completely, been there, done that. But he is comparing apples and oranges throughout the video. For example, at 6:50 he compares the 1 inch frontal armor of the M-41 to a M-60 and its 7 inches of frontal armor. It's just not possible to design a 20-25 ton tank with 6-7 inches of armor. If the M-41 was compared against its peers, say the PT-76 or Saladin Armored car which performed fairly similar roles, then the comparisons might make sense. For example, if you had a destroyer and it was forced to engage a battleship and was sunk, would you say the destroyer was a poor design since it was sunk? No, it was placed into a role for which it wasn't suitable.

3:40 Development began in 1976? That was towards the end of the Vietnam war. You mean 1946? Yes, it's surprising that light tank concept still exists. For reconnaissance they might be good but that's it. Maybe they could attack some units from their positions in their reconnaissance role. I wonder what the Griffin tank will used for.

In your defense the turret shape is very similar however if you look the edges on the M-47 are more rounded and the M-41 does not have a bow mounted machine gun like the M-47 which was the last American tank to do so! The ARVN M41s would have been more effective but command kept them with little available gas to prevent their use in a possible coup d'etat. The mechanicals were robust and were the basis for a generation of tracked armoured vehicles but in a world of surplus T34/85s, the 76mm. main gun wasn't dominant enough. The M41 really proved the overall dominance of the MBT and the intermediate step wasn't the light tank but the armed reconnaissance ACAV/IFV arnored cavalry assault vehicle.

If it looks like an MBT, and drives like an MBT, and shoots like and MBT then it must be an MBT. Not if its a lightweight mobile infantry support vehicle, tracked. And that's a light tank. Its good for recon and direct infantry fire support. Too bad it doesn't look like a jeep with a recoil-less rifle so people wouldn't keep trying to make it fight like an MBT. It might even have a better reputation.

Just to be clear the m41 is a tank destroyer. A main battle tank is designed to take on enemy positions and fight other tanks it is a generalist. While a tank destroyer is just what it says, a specialist designed to destroy other tanks. Using the now abandoned philosophy the idea was that the tank destroyers would hit at the tanks while backed up with heavier forces guarding them and allowing their speed to get them out of the way of any engagement before a stand-up fight developed. Hence the thinner armor and high speed of the bulldog.

Using gasoline for power is a real red flag for me. Since politicians fight over bringing military manufacturing to their state, I wonder which politicians in the pocket of oil companies pushed more flammable gasoline over the safer diesel.

I just wanted to toss Simon a high-five for saying "playa" correctly this time. It shows that you're putting more into these videos than turning on and speaking to a camera.

As good as the M41 WB was at the time, the project was a failure. It was totally possible at the time, do develop what has proven to be the best ever light reconnaissance vehicle ever built. Something that mimics the FV101 and FV 104. Scorpion and Scimitar CVR(T) vehicles. M41 was simply too big for it's role. The most dangerous weapon on such a class of vehicles is actually the radio and someone who knows how to use it!

The role of IFV and light tank is mostly interchangeable. In fact, the whole concept of "light tank" is about as dead as "battlecruisers" after the Hood was launched.

Protection is an onion: 5. Don't be there 4. Don't be seen 3. Don't be hit 2. Don't be penetrated 1. Don't be killed Tanks have five layers of protection, with each of them being a "saving throw." A mobile gun or fire support vehicle does not have the second level of protection-if it is hit, it will be penetrated.
