I'd love a little commentary on how the entire costume of the grim reaper became as fixed as it is. The raggy , full-length hooded robe or cloak garment is pretty fixed now. Does it originate with monks? Older mythological references? regular farm fashion plus deterioration and black for death? Also, with everything else so fixed, it's interesting that death's face goes from skeleton, to white ghost face, to wizened old man(in the tarrot) , and is often hiding beneath the hood entirely, which implies a fair bit about the unknown. It'd be fun to explore the history and meaning creation of that.

This personification reminds me of the Indian belief of death talking the form of Yama and his assistants - The Yamadutas (Sanskrit: यमदूत), who wield a whip (made from all the materialistic attachments) instead of the scythe, to pull out the soul of the dead. One of the most iconic portrayals of the Grim Reaper in Western Animation is Grim in both Grim and Evil as well as The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy! He's a well meaning guy, voiced by Greg Eagles(current voice of Aku Aku in the Crash Bandicoot franchise)and considered a Butt-Monkey since he was treated terribly by two kids who hired him. There's plenty of Reapers in popular culture to pick out, but another meaning of death(aside from other personifications such as Thanatos and Chronos)goes by the title of Dance Macabre, aka the dance to death. Another example is a Japanese entity known as the Shinigami(translated from Japanese as Death God, since the former wife or sister of Izanagi called Izanami, who died giving birth to the God of infernal flames Hinokazawa), but those are related stories to tell, but not for long.

My name is Grimmy and I have come for your immortal soul. I love the episode where we get to see Grimm as a little kid. My favorite one is when Mandy has to enter a beauty contest and sings Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Freaking hysterical!

The only reason why I even knew about the from reaper was because of the children's tv show (sorry if I misspell it) "Grim adventures Billy and Mandy". If you have never seen it it's one of the best shows to re watch again.

This makes me so happy. Two of my favorites on KZbin doing a collab! I wonder when a sort of standardized image of the Grim Reaper came into existence. Would also be interesting to know a bit about how the Grim Reaper is connected to the Angel of Death.

I've been getting increasingly interested in this cryptid series. Don't know if the creators would be interested to look into this, but here's a native Alaskan story I heard of years ago. A girl went outside of her village along with some dogs overnight, and was going to travel at night. One of the dogs suddenly pawed off its skin at the head, and told her she's in danger. To live, she'd have to settle in for the night, to which she agreed to do so. The dog put the skin it tore off back on, and the girl went to sleep. The next morning, she woke up to the group of dogs massacred all about the area, undoubtedly in exchange for her life, though I can't remember if the messenger dog lived or not. I'm sure this version is very inaccurate as it's a story I heard years ago, and I'm sure the story was about a specific area, and not for any theme of safety because I've known many people in those rural areas to travel at night

That sounds like a paw story but thinking about how painful it must have been for the skinless dog makes me think it is more likely a poor paw story.

I have to say that the art that came out of the Black Death period is morbid but extremely captivating. They knew how to capture the mood of the era really well. They are the perfect emotional counterpart to any historical dissertation on that crisis.

That "Bowling Death" AIDS PSA is pretty wild. It was used quite effectively in Vincent Ward's The Navigator. And that's a pretty trippy movie too.

This could and should have been so much longer I absolutely loved it, not in a macabre way. I am absolutely fascinated with our (humanities) fear of "The Grim Mower" 😜 I would love to see this cross-over again maybe explaining in detail its earliest depictions and how it evolved and changed through history.

If I have my Japanese mythology straight, the Shinto religion also portrays death as a bunch of human-like figures that watch the mortal realm and harvest the lives of people who are about to die and they are called "shinigami" which in Japanese means death god, god/s of death or spirits of death.
@deepwaters72423 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Death in His Dark Materials trilogy (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass). Death is like your personal shadow, everyone has their own, and it comes closer to comfort you as your time arrives. Cool concept!

In Greece we call the Grim Reaper Charon. In ancient Greek mythology he hwas the son of the god of darkness Erevus and goddes Nychta (means night). He was in charge of transferring the dead to the underworld, after Hermes. He didn't have a scyth, but a paddle since the transport was a boat at River Styga or Acheronda. The service wasn't free so ancient greeks used to put a coin under the tongue of the dead. He was depicted as a very old man.

The DMV persona was best presented by the late Terry Pratchett, in his Discworld novels, Death was a bored bureaucrat trying to leave his dull monotonous life and live a more vibrant one, going so far as to adopt a child (a female in a nod to the Grim Mowress alluded to in this video), make friends and have hobbies. This version of death was probably the most endearing to Gen X and Y English language readers, of whom I'm one, since it tried to disarm a malevolent character and show it a more benevolent if not humane light... This obviously ended with Pratchett's career/life and now we are back to the scary hardcore death of past years.🤦♂️

Death as a DMV persona . . . I don't remember this being brought up in the video, but your mention just reminded me of Paul Simon's song "The Afterlife". Just fill in the form and stand in the line . . . .

when I was little, I dealt with a lot of abuse. I had a lot of friends and parental figures who... "disappeared". and those memories would wake me up with nightmares or keep me from sleeping. and I remember on those nights, or after an attempt to "unalive" myself, the grim reaper would sit with me and comfort me while I cried. they were quiet and warm and comforting. they'd just stay with me. they were a good friend

Hmmm Being a Western Slav we tend to speak of death as female because "Smrtka" End with an a which is female. A male would be "Smrtiak" Or "Smrto nos" (... My phone doesn't have the my. Vols for pronunciation as i lice abroad) Also in many Czech comedies it seems to tame the form of very old skinny woman more often than not although it does switch in between based on what you need for the story.

this reminds me of the grim reapers from black butler manga, where they are portrayed as bureaucrats with a list of souls to collect. each reapers has their own deathscythes aka the weapon they use to collect souls and one of them literally use a lawnmower. its been a while since i read the manga but this video reminds me of the manga

The painting at 7:00 is by Salvator Rosa and is called 'Human Frailty'. The woman in the picture is Rosa's mistress, and the child is their infant son who died of plague. I first saw this painting when I was a small child, when my mother took me to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, near where we lived at the time, and I saw it hanging there. It has haunted me ever since.
