Great Big Story

Great Big Story

Күн бұрын

This is the story of how a tiny, magical creature was transformed into a cultural phenomenon by inventor, marketing genius and complicated eccentric Harold von Braunhut. Full of fun facts (both charming and disturbing), Just Add Water is a colorful short film about a half-century of marketing directly to children, the force of nostalgia in pop culture, and an unlikely meeting of flim-flam and hard science. A film by Penny Lane.
This Great Big Film was made in collaboration with our friends at CNN Films.

@Colin Feezell A possible Nihilist! This guy was certainly very creative, but he was also probably very deep in self-loathing, hopelessness, and a desire to feel companionship, all of us have that. and, as you know, the combination of these feelings spiralled into giving millions to a Third-Reich wannabe group. Sad.

I’m almost 25 and have had sea monkeys since I was 19, I’ve never replaced the eggs, rarely buy the treats and rarely change the water fully. I genuinely think they’re amazing, you can see when the females are pregnant, the babies are cute. I’ve had multiple tanks so can vouch that a good 40% of the eggs don’t work - i always buy a few of the egg sachets for one hatching.

Boy, ain't that the truth. Everything was a lie! But why? The truth is so much more easier. It teaches a new generation life lessons that help in navigating this whole dream we are in. Contemplate that ~ we think we are doing life, good choices, bad choices, etc. and then find out down the road that we were actually someone else's dream. Yea, so all this shit doesn't matter, does it?

I had sea monkeys as a kid and I loved them, I became insanely good at growing and breeding them to insane sizes and numbers and I would scoop up a little container of them, take them to my babysitters and feed them to her collection of guppies. I learnt very quickly what they were and I thought it would be really cool to supply a live diet to the fish. The guppies loved it, they were so healthy and thrived. I think I was 10 when this all happened.

My sea monkeys did well. They even mated & had new generations of offspring. You would see a little, dark, egg mass toward the tail end before they were released. 😊✌

Also, if you freeze-frame the patent text, you'll see that there's a dechlorinator in packet 1 as well. And at least in the original iteration of the product, there were eggs in the second packet too, to ensure "mommy & daddy" sea monkeys _and_ "the kids". But if you were missing out on the dechlorinators and other water-conditioners from packet 1, yeah, perhaps your packet 2 aquasimians were doomed.

I too raised Sea Monkeys. I also noticed the existence of the Sea Monkeys on packet number one. Kinda proud. I was only ten years old. I had the ocean view aquarium too. On my second batch they actually got to the point of mating. I remember some members of the school were happily connected. Makin brine love.

I wanted sea monkeys when I was a kid. My Pop said he'd get me some. I came home from school and he had a gallon jar of them swimming around on my dresser with a small lamp behind them. I found out years later that he got them from the neighbors who raised brine shrimp for their tropical fish. They were cool for a week till I dropped in couple tiny minnows who ate all my monkeys. Then I got a dog, so who cared?

So, once I had a fish tank in the back of my classroom. We studied brine shrimp once in the nearby biology classes. I didn't feel like feeding fish so eventually I started buying brine shrimp and learning how to hatch them. DIRT cheap! So, I had some, left them, forgot about them. Put them in the bottom of a plant I was growing in just water. Ignored them for about 6months. Maybe even a year. I came back LONG after any reasonable amount of time to a plant that I had kept watering. Sure it had brine shrimp for a while, but I didn't expect any microbes. One day I see movement in among the roots of the plant. Upon checking it out, I found I had a MASSIVE brine shrimp about the size of a quarter. It had gossamer wings and was a tiny angel living in my plant jar. It was the coolest thing I had ever seen. Lasted almost another year. I would just go back and watch for it and it would glide around with these massive wings. STUNNING how large and beautiful it became.

I bought these for my kids and after many, many months, some of them got huge. Not along the lines of what you're talking about, but pretty damn big. I enjoyed watching them grow, along with my kids...Then, our angel fish had babies and I found out that I had to breed brine shrimp to feed the tiny fish. This was the end of my innocence.

Somebody once claimed that you could market anything. Hell, you could bottle frigging water and if you marketed it right, people would drink it up and you could make millions, even if they could get it easily for free out of drinking fountains and their own damn tap. That's brilliant marketing. Yep.

In some places the water that comes out of the tap is garbage, and the only way you can safely consume water is to get it elsewhere. Bottled water is convenient for this problem. Real spring water tastes better than tap water in many places. Just sayin'.

I really wanted these when I was a kid but my parents would refuse to buy them for me because they assumed I thought that they were like the stupid illustrations, but I'd learned something cool about them, that they always swim upside down with their bellies towards the light so if you put them in a dark tank and shine the light from below they would go upside down or to one side they would align and swim in a vertical plane or a horizontal or whatever, so I managed to get some for my science fair project, they were fun :D If you ever get to Salt Lake City, the lake has really pretty brine shrimp that range in colour from a deep reddish orange to sunflower yellow to cream colour. I wasn't able to get them to breed though

Nooooooo. When older and wiser I was better at aquariums I got them again (to raise as fish food) but rather than using the provided "water conditioner" I used my own chlorine remover and aquarium salt because I was raising them in a bigger tank. They never got born! I thought they must have gotten too cold (I was living way up in Canada at the time and they may have gotten zapped with -40 degree weather and I was disappointed but didn't stress over it that bad. Way later I learned that the "eggs" aren't eggs ad the eggs are in the water conditioner (which I had chucked) D'oh! XD

I once gave Sea Monkeys as an Xmas gag gift to everyone in the office. I got more sincere thanks for them in the following weeks than for any thing else. Even more than those flying pigs. It might have disappointed kids back in the day, but they're fascinating to bored adults in offices who never raised any before... Now I want to start a tank. Again.
