Also, if you freeze-frame the patent text, you'll see that there's a dechlorinator in packet 1 as well. And at least in the original iteration of the product, there were eggs in the second packet too, to ensure "mommy & daddy" sea monkeys _and_ "the kids". But if you were missing out on the dechlorinators and other water-conditioners from packet 1, yeah, perhaps your packet 2 aquasimians were doomed.

So, once I had a fish tank in the back of my classroom. We studied brine shrimp once in the nearby biology classes. I didn't feel like feeding fish so eventually I started buying brine shrimp and learning how to hatch them. DIRT cheap! So, I had some, left them, forgot about them. Put them in the bottom of a plant I was growing in just water. Ignored them for about 6months. Maybe even a year. I came back LONG after any reasonable amount of time to a plant that I had kept watering. Sure it had brine shrimp for a while, but I didn't expect any microbes. One day I see movement in among the roots of the plant. Upon checking it out, I found I had a MASSIVE brine shrimp about the size of a quarter. It had gossamer wings and was a tiny angel living in my plant jar. It was the coolest thing I had ever seen. Lasted almost another year. I would just go back and watch for it and it would glide around with these massive wings. STUNNING how large and beautiful it became.

I bought these for my kids and after many, many months, some of them got huge. Not along the lines of what you're talking about, but pretty damn big. I really wanted these when I was a kid but my parents would refuse to buy them for me because they assumed I thought that they were like the stupid illustrations, but I'd learned something cool about them, that they always swim upside down with their bellies towards the light so if you put them in a dark tank and shine the light from below they would go upside down or to one side they would align and swim in a vertical plane or a horizontal or whatever, so I managed to get some for my science fair project, they were fun :D If you ever get to Salt Lake City, the lake has really pretty brine shrimp that range in colour from a deep reddish orange to sunflower yellow to cream colour. I thought they must have gotten too cold (I was living way up in Canada at the time and they may have gotten zapped with -40 degree weather and I was disappointed but didn't stress over it that bad. This kinda starts going off the rails at 10:50 Last we heard was that Sea Monkeys didn't actually live very long, were small and needed to be genetically engineered to be more like they were advertised. But from that point on next few minutes are spent focusing on Harold's darker side, with final mention of Sea Monkeys being that watch thing. So what happened? Did they succeeded in engineering larger, longer-lasting Sea Monkeys? Did they fail? Come on, I appreciate knowledge about the man himself too, but you can't just leave this gap in the Sea Monkey story!

I personally don’t think it’s that complicated. There are many historical “heroes” we look up to because of the great things they did; Christopher Columbus discovered new land, Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, and so on. What some people don’t know is that Christopher Columbus discovered land that was already occupied by others who had lived there for generations, yet he gave them a new name and raped them. Thomas Jefferson was one of the largest slaveowners of his time and was also a pedophile. Just because these people did something good or what would greatly influence the world we live in today, that doesn’t mean they were perfect or even good people. The inventor of the Sea Monkeys is no different from these “heroes”. This just shows that we don’t live in a black-and-white world and no human is your version of perfect. All of the glorified historical figures did what they believed was right, whether the majority of people believed so or not. This is just the balance of life, to do good and bad. But also, this shows how society is unaware of and even undermines the evil parts of the people we want to believe are worthy of looking up to.
