Disappointed by President Woodrow Wilson’s handling of the 1919 Treaty of Versailles, American diplomat William C. Bullitt approached Sigmund Freud to co-author a psychological analysis of the president.
Examine the significance of Bullitt and Freud’s findings with Patrick Weil, Florence Rogatz Visiting Professor of Law at Yale Law School, who rediscovered the 1932 manuscript in Yale University’s archives in 2014 and authored the 2023 book “The Madman in the White House: Sigmund Freud, Ambassador Bullitt, and the Lost Psychobiography of Woodrow Wilson.”
Hosted in partnership with the Linda Hall Library.

In certain respects, Woodrow Wilson was one of the worst U.S. Presidents. His imposition of rigid Jim Crow racial segregation in the federal government workforce in 1913 was obscene and horrible. What's more: his arrogance and unwillingness to work together with some of his Republican opponents in Congress (e.g. Senator Henry Cabot Lodge of MA) doomed his efforts to have the Senate ratify the Treaty of Versailles and vote for the U.S. to join the League of Nations in 1919.

Wilson's legacy has faded considerably since I was a student in the US public school system. Wilson was presented as an almost saintly figure. The truth, of course, is that there are no saints in politics
