I love this song because it shows a very different and deep side to the cool and calculating Scar. He’s been so deprived of love and attention for his whole life, and his ego needs to be fed so badly that he starts to go crazy when he begins to realize how much everyone hates him, and when he’s compared to Mufasa. It’s all a part as to why he was willing to go so far to become king. It’s sad really.

Scar is almost literally becoming Macbeth (like someone else in the comments said)! Part of this scene ("His shadow lingers over me,..") is essentially the scene where Macbeth sees the ghost of Banquo, a close friend who Macbeth had had killed during his own rise to power.

Actually they always associate the first Lion King with Hamlet not Macbeth. Even the creators said they were inspired by Hamlet. The uncle kills the King to take his place, the son seeks revenge when his father appears to him as a ghost or apparition. True, you do have a bit of Macbeth in the film, but it is more inspired by Hamlet.

Its intresing to see how the french version's interpretation is subtily different. When Scar speaks to himself in completely confusion and conflict, the French version placed Scar hallucinating Mufasa's phantom everywhere he looks. The actor play is completely different: Scar is in conflit and speaks faster and faster to himself in VO, but Scar is terrified, is scared to death in the VF. Goood I love this song. Probably one of the bests of the show.
