There are many wonderful photographers out there who teach but I absolutely love watching and learning from Joel Grimes. His down to earth teaching style and his self deprecating humor makes him so relateable. I can't say thank you enough. I have gained so much knowledge in this relatively short video seminar.

Joel Grimes is an impeccable example of the value of practical execution. Take action. Action, action, action. Schooling is obviously extremely valuable, but we can have a way of fetishizing schooling today. To think that JOEL GRIMES doesn’t know what he’s talking about because he doesn’t keep up with the “brand names” of the lighting techniques is to express perfect ignorance, even arrogance. Phenomenal talk. Thanks for posting!

Best part is at 1:40:00 in the video. Shoot what you want, get good at it, and clients will hire you for that look. Don't try to copy other people and just do YOU really really good and customers will see that and if they love what you do then you're in like Flynn. :)

I am currently taking Joel’s course on photography lighting. He is a great teacher and I like the way he breaks stuff down. I have 13 years as a photographer and I’m always learning something new. Coming from a darkroom and film setting to now has always been a hard switch but I love photography and Joel Grimes reminds why I love what I do. I took off from photography from 2007 until 2017.

Thank you for this video Joel!! I'm not good at math or knowing all of the terminology. I used to belong to a camera club and they looked down at me because I didn't remember all of that so I quit. Out of all of those people in the club, there are maybe 10-15 people that are professional, earning money doing photography. I am one of maybe 5 that works as a full-time photographer. I appreciate all of your knowledge and the way you explain it. Thank you!

So around 32:12 he shows the effect of different size of modifier at different distance. The "quality of light" is not the same. You can see the darkness on the edges of the face and arms is much more pronounced when the light is close. Inverse square law at work.
@timorraiman5377 жыл бұрын
As he explains, this is because when the light is further, it spills around the room more and you get more reflected fill lights, so the shadows are lighter. According to Joel, the transition from light to shadow is the same number of pixels in length. So, quality of light here means how quickly light transitions to shadow and not how dark the shadows are.

"The size of the light source relative to the subject". That is what you need to understand for all the other explanations. When instructors use use the above, all the rest starts to make sense.

Is it just me, or is there a correlation in the shots as in: 3/4 Face -> side light; Full Face -> overhead straight-on + reflector? This is what I see in Joel's work shown here. Very interesting tutorial. I don't need to go and buy a kit of 3 or 4 lights!! Just get one!

Correct me if I'm wrong but in regard to his "rembrandt-cross light" set up, the center point of his light is technically 45 degrees from the subject he just has the box feathered at an adjacent 90 degree angle, much like a window might be. So he isn't wrong in calling that rembrandt lighting and it would be possible for rembrandt to be in the room when painting with this set up.
