The Magic Of The Dotted 8th Note Delay - And How To Use It.

I think its safe to say that both James's and I favorite effects is the dotted 8th note delay. It can add so much texture to a guitar part and has been used by many great guitarists such as David Gilmore, The Edge to name a few.
Lots of delay pedals don't have a Dotted 8th note control, so in this video, we show you how to tap out a footed 8th note that will work on nearly every delay pdeal out there.

Another quick way to do it in your DAW (and this is what I do)…. Take your tempo, divide by 3 and times by 2. So if your song tempo is 120 bpm, set your delay to 80 bpm. Same effect

Sorry, this is wrong. Songtempo 120bpm => Quarter Note Length = 500ms, Dotted Eight Note Length = 375ms (= 500/4*3) => 160bpm (= 60s/0,375s). You must set your delay to 160bpm

I exclusively use a delay set for dotted 8th time. The rare times I need a 8th note delay time, I tap quarter note triplettes!

If you have a hard time to remember how to count , just listen to and remember the fill when the drums comes in on AC/DCs Thunderstruck in relation to the beat.

The syllabic rhythm of: "mine's a pint of bitter" - mine's is the first downbeat of the bar.

Some delay units will display the milliseconds you tap in. This can be used to easily calculate the dot. Tap quarter notes if you want to figure out dotted quarter note or eighth notes if you want to figure out dotted eighth. Look at the value. Say it's 400ms. Add 50%, that's 600ms. Set the delay to 600ms. There you go, Bob's your uncle. You can figure out dotted 8ths from tapping 1/4 notes as well, but it's not quite as easy. Take 3/4ths of the value displayed. So if you tap out 400ms, then set it to 300ms for a dotted 1/8th.

Yes this is a way to get delay times, but it’s not possible to do that live, or asking the drummer what the exact tempo is.
