Perhaps completely ignoring the small matter of a possible m.rd.r confession and the issue of the bloke creating a public nuisance in his intoxicated state didn't do them any favours. Let's hope the jovial and calm(ish) facades don't drop the minute they're out of public view. I remember going for a stroll through Salt Hill Park in Slough in the 90s, tip-toeing through the litter and avoiding the rats, steering a wide berth around the more stabby types who were also out for their daily exercise, when I came across a beautifully crafted piece of artwork, obviously created by a local professional artist - It was a very simple, yet visually striking hand scrawled piece which read, "ISLAM IS COMING" in big black dripping letters over the top of a sign in a way that some less arty types might interpret as some kind of threat. Well, I'm guessing that Islam did indeed arrive in full force (and was mostly living in the extra rooms many residents built disguised as large sheds at the bottom of their gardens to avoid planning permission) and it didn't turn out quite the way the artist envisaged. Why can't Islam be more like the village hall cream tea version of Christianity that used to be in the UK years ago? That seemed much friendlier and more welcoming. Instead, we seem to have welcomed in a parasite that is consuming what little good was left there.

Swarm over, Death! Come, bombs and blow to smithereens Those air -conditioned, bright canteens, Tinned fruit, tinned meat, tinned milk, tinned beans, Tinned minds, tinned breath. Mess up the mess they call a town- A house for ninety-seven down And once a week a half a crown For twenty years. And get that man with double chin Who'll always cheat and always win, Who washes his repulsive skin In women's tears: And smash his desk of polished oak And smash his hands so used to stroke And stop his boring dirty joke And make him yell. But spare the bald young clerks who add The profits of the stinking cad; It's not their fault that they are mad, They've tasted Hell. It's not their fault they do not know The birdsong from the radio, It's not their fault they often go To Maidenhead And talk of sport and makes of cars In various bogus-Tudor bars And daren't look up and see the stars But belch instead. In labour-saving homes, with care Their wives frizz out peroxide hair And dry it in synthetic air And paint their nails. Come, friendly bombs and fall on Slough To get it ready for the plough. The cabbages are coming now; The earth exhales.' But AB, I have no idea how true this is, because I haven't been there, and that was written nearly 100 years ago! After World war two. Our leadership, needed to rebuild the economy after two such major global conflicts in relatively quick succession. The death toll of working age men was huge. So being the Victor, we were notcrligible for international aid like much of Europe. So our politicians and business leaders hatched a plan. They would encourage our allies from the Commonwealth to come here to achieve two massive goals. 1. Rebuild the economy. 2. Drive down the wage bill by artificially swelling the available workforce. In the 70s. Our manufacturing base was exported abroad to further maximise profits. Thus once again empiverishing the majority here, from all races. So highlighting Tony Blair though convenient is a fraction of the full picture from both sides of the house.

@@davidsmith5523- you’re right about a lot of that, but Tony Blair opened the borders and should be held to account. The numbers now coming in mean the death of British culture and society as was.

To be very grudgingly fair, I might be a bit grumpy too if I'd joined the police in England and then found myself posted to Lahore. I agree with the earlier comment that there is no basis for "detention" without arrest in England - that's a US concept. Only for the duration of a lawful stop and search; when searching a home (and only if you are interfering with the search); or to prevent an _imminent_ breach of the peace. See Walker v The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis [2014] EWCA Civ 897, Wood v DPP [2008] EWHC 1056, and others.

Slough is such a depressing place. The decent people from 25+ years ago have been gradually replaced by people who have very low standards. It's not just drunks, drug addicts & criminals. It's ordinary law abiding people. A disproportionate number of people are rude or thoughtless or stupid or anti-social. It's not just working class people. Even the middle-class areas of the town are like this.

@@byteme9718That’s ok … I’ve lived around the Slough area for the past 45 years and it had a thriving town centre in the 1970’s and 1980’s. It is now in terminal decline and Slough Council is bankrupt. Most of the original residents have either moved away or shop further away in the out of town stores or places like Uxbridge, Bracknell and Windsor.

11:30 Pollice always refuse to handle a report when they have been stopped by someone and always say "ring 101". To which I say would they say the same thing if someone reported a murder. This is the poem Slough, by Sir John Betjemen, probably never been here in his life. 'Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough, it isn't fit for humans now.' Right, I don't think you solve town planning problems by dropping bombs all over the place, he's embarrassed himself there. Next 'In labour saving homes with care, their wives frizz out peroxide hair, and dry it in synthetic air, and paint their nails-' they wanna look nice, what's the matter, doesn't he like girls? 'And talks of sports and makes of cars, and various bogus Tudor bars, and daren't look up and see the stars, but belch instead.' What's he on about? What, has he never burped? 'Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough, to get it ready for the plough. The cabbages are coming now, the earth exhales-' He's the only cabbage round here. And they made him a night of the realm. Overrated.

@spiritusinfinitus Жыл бұрын
When Sir John Betjeman, wrote that poem 86 years ago, Slough was an absolute paradise compared to what it has since become. I used to live there a quarter of a century ago and I thought it was pretty bad then, but now it really seems to have sunk into the depths of depravity.
