Stephen Merritt is the ONLY Male Pop songwriter that can compare to Leonard Cohen, and might even surpass him. Dylan? Simon? Even Tom Waits? Giants in their way, but Merritt takes what he's inherited to a wholly more sublime level I think. It's because he concentrates so many layers of emotional power in such carefully chosen poetry and perfect chord changes. Transcendent, always!
