The Magnificent KWM-1 Off the Shame Shelf

For about 6 months the KWM-1 was inoperative insofar as the S Meter and low audio volume. Using the PM2 Supply I tested it this morning and it is operational. The issues I saw were with the 516F2 supply. So now I have to track down the problem in the 516F2 supply. This KWM-1 is nearly halfway through the production cycle with S/N 508.
This would have been a blast to own in 1959! Ride along with a bit of history.

Nice one Pete, sounds delightful. Can I send you my Switch Mode Power Supply to fix? No circuit diagram available from the supplier, or anywhere on-line. That's the throw away society for you.

Hi Steve, Thanks for your post. Yes, indeed a throw away culture. In a couple of months, I have been invited as a guest speaker to a radio club in the UK via Zoom. The presentation is titled The Art of Troubleshooting in 3 Easy Steps. Firstly, it is more of black magic than art and next there are no three easy steps and the first on the list of where to start is get the documentation. So indeed, I understand your frustration. Wasn't it weird for a ham transciever to not have 80 and 40?

The time was 1957 and Cycle 19 was heating up. Here we have an all-in-one box that could be used mobile, fixed and portable. All of the cool DX was on the higher bands. I can remember 10Meters being open 24 hours a day. No one thought 80 or 40 Meters. There was a mod in one of the ARRL Mobile handbooks to convert the KWM-1 to 80 Meters as many of the low-level circuits are already in the 75M band. 73's Pete N6QW
