Martin does not in fact speak polish, and neither does Jon (it's said more like vey-paah-latch", than wepalatch). "Wypalać" in polish means "to burn out". I cannot believe my language came in handy. Edit after 4 years, because I just noticed I was unclear: "wypalać" *can* also mean "cauterize" or "brand", but it's not the first meaning that comes to mind.

It seems to me that the eye symbols were protecting Gerard. I'm assuming that the eye pendant he wore protected his head from being burnt and his eye tattoos protected his joints. Is being watched the key? Could this be connected to Graham Folger who was alive until Amy Patel stopped watching him? And his notebook which had "keep watching" over and over again? So now, with nurse Lesere Saraki. At the end, when she gets the feeling of being watched. Is it inherently ominous or is she actually being protected?

Makes sense. The theory reminds me a bit of this Eastern legend I once read, though I dunno how it was called again. Basically, a Buddhist monk accidentally insults a bunch of demons. So, they invite him to their festival to play his instrument as payback, but a god tells him it's a trap. The demons will tear him to pieces once they see him. But the God helps him. He covers every piece of the Monks body with holy writing, which renders the Monk invisible. However, like Siegfried, the god forgotten the ears of the Monk. Night arrives and the Monk goes to the festival. He is nearly invisible, playing his instrument which seems to come from everywhere. The demons howl that they can't track him down. At one point though, they see his floating ears. Clever as they are, they piece together that the Monk is protected by holy writing that cover his entire body. Angered over their failure, they gleefully rip the Monks ears off as it's the only thing not protected. Or something. I tried looking it up, but I can't find the legend. But I know that it's often showing up when you get into more obscure legends.

@@katziliaf That's an interesting take on the Japanese legend Hoichi The Earless. The one I remember is that he was a blind but skilled minstrel whose skill on the biwa could bring many to tears. He was guided by a gruff samurai into what seemed to be a grand house of a daimyō. His music is met with high praise, and he is asked to return the following evening. Hoichi's friend , who is suspicious, follows him....only to find the minstrel playing his biwa furiously in the middle of the Amidaji cemetery. Realizing that Hoichi had been bewitched by ghosts, the priest vowed to save his friend by painting Hoichi's body with the kanji characters of the Heart Sutra for protection. He was also instructed to remain silent and motionless when the spirits called upon him. The "samurai" indeed returns, and calls for him...but can find no sign of Hoichi- save his ears. With that, the "samurai" tears off the minstrel's ears to offer as proof to his "lord" that he was not remiss in his orders. Remarkably, Hoichi had not cried out despite his injuries ( probably from shock). When the priest returned, he realized in dismay that he had neglected to write the sutra on Hoichi's ears. Nevertheless, Hoichi not only recovered, but went on to become a famous musician.

The pronounciation of this Polish word was so off that I had to replay it like 20 times before I heard anything that would make sense... Hearing English-speaking people use Slaving languages is always an interesting experience :D "palacz" would be a person who smokes (like cigaretts) or who adds coal to fuel something e.g.; and "wypalać" does in fact mean "to mark something by burning it", but also "to burn out" (e.g. a forest or to burn out creatively)

. . . I find slavic languages extreamly hard, I have not even a clue where to start with an attempt at pronounciation. To me the notoriously obscure welsh, despite less contact is way easyer, japanese, all, ok, frensh . . . I am not good but understandable but no chance at all at slavic languages
@FromAsgard32
@FromAsgard32 2 жыл бұрын
@@arianewinter4266 Yeah, Polish is rather difficult, sometimes even if you're a native speaker, because grammar can be very tricky xD I assume that for most people the pronunciation is hard due to all the s/ś/z/ź/ż/sz/cz/rz etc. sounds appearing close to one another all the time. I'm gussing that for many people it would be hard even if they'd know all the rules, because it's not common in many languages to have so many clusters of sibilants per sentence. Like in that common tongue twister: "W Szczebrzeszynie chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie" where there are at least 10 sounds like that packed in 6 words. I'm not sure if other Slavic languages are this extreme, though. I feel like there are easier ones than Polish (the ones that sound softer) to pick if someone wanted to learn :D

Is this nurse could be the same nurse in Burned Out? Is Jared Keay the same Jared Keay in Pageturner? Is the pendant the pendant as the pendant in Father’s Love? I am trying to remember all the names. Graham was also a name mentioned many times in the stories. I just realize how much these stories could relate to some kind of a cult that started way back in 1920 during of that in The Piper episode. The eye in Pageturner could be the same design of which of the pendant in Father’s Love. I am so interested to actually know know if these stories have connection to each other.
@TheNitpickChick
@TheNitpickChick 3 жыл бұрын
Without going into spoilers: 1. The nurse from Burned Out was named Anna or Annie, I believe, and thus is a different nurse to this statement giver. 2. Yes, this Gerard Keay is the same man from Pageturner. He will be showing up quite a bit. :) 3. The pendant from Father’s Love was a hand with a closed eye. While it doesn’t specify what design Gerard’s pendant was, Gerard isn’t one for closed-eye symbolism. It is hard to keep track of all the little details the first time through, as you don’t yet know what’s truly significant and what isn’t. But yes there are MANY connections between the various statements. As you learn more, I would highly recommend re-listening to the early episodes again. It’s amazing how much they set up this early in the series! 😁

"obviously there's a lot to unpack here" uh yeah man there sure is. this was a juicy one! more of jared key (or gerard? it sounds like jared the way the narrator says it) being potentially morally dubious but also maybe heroic? he allegedly killed his mother, and the statement giver here watched him kill the chanting man, but clearly there was more to the situation with his mom, and here i'm pretty sure killing the guy was the only way to stop everything from burning/boiling. 'beholding' and 'the lightless flame' sound important, are they rival cults? the people's church of the divine host hand closed eye symbols associated with it, but assuming that's different from beholding and all the eye imagery jared's rocking, then that's 3 supernatural cults. happy to hear the narrator (begrudgingly) admit that martin was right about something, and pleasantly surprised that the footage they recovered actually corroborated the statement giver's story, even if there's no clear explanation for why.

I have a best friend named Gerard, he introduced me to this show and I’m slowly experiencing it for the first time, he’s giving me little hints and I’m just giving it all my theories in Instagram dms and all it’s responses are basically summed up by ;D and I was very exited to meet Gerard for that reason. I’ve seen his fanart so I know eyes have major significance and it just keeps telling me “if you think it connects it probably does” which is a theorists dream. Ps if you see this Gerry go get some water you Eldridge Rilakkuma💛

SPOILERY COMMENT So I think that Saraki was about to be taken by the Desolation, but Gerry gave her to the Eye instead. We see several times throughout the series that promising oneself to one fear can save one from another. Mike Crew promised himself to the Vast to escape the Spiral. Burroughs was saved from the Desolation by (????????). Anyway, that’s why she feels like she’s being watched. She’s promised to the eye.

so Jared Key and his leather book are from Pageturner, and isn't the eye pendant mentioned in A Father's Love? I believe the mother had one like that.

The mother’s seemed more like a hand of Fatima, but it’s closed. The hand of Fatima has an open eye in the middle of the hand and is often for protection. Maybe the closed eye symbolizes a lack of protection?

It occurred to me on my second listen through of the series that all the patients getting up, filing out, and then returning several minutes later... was a fire drill 😂 I don't know if this was intentional or just something my brain decided to have a laugh at but considering all the Lightless Flame business and the fact that there seemed to be no other specific reason why this happened I feel like it may have been on purpose.

SERIES SPOILERS This really makes me wonder what Gerard might actually have to do with the Desolation. I'm relistening to these few episodes (it's Gerry loving hours) and knowing he at least has some kind of protection and aid from the Eye, maybe he was assisting the Web in this way? Gerry isn't a monster hunter, just a book guy, so what did this particular unnamed Desolation avatar have to do with Gerry, the Eye, and the Web? Does it have anything to do with Agnes, maybe? And why was Gerry hellbent on THIS one? I don't remember when he brings it up again

**spoilers obviously** this actually ties into basira's first statement. she was first sectioned after she made an arrest on diego molina, the guy who was brought in with gerry here. when he was arrested, diego had an unnamed book bound in red leather with him. one of basira's colleagues tried to destroy the book while it was in police custody and was later found dead in a bath tub of boiling water. the police couldn't make the arson charge diego was arrested for stick, so he was released and went on to encounter gerry. i don't know think they said if diego even actually got the book back, but i'm pretty sure it's what gerry was looking for, and things just got really out of hand for him.
