English isn’t my first language but what do u find weird in the way she talks? At first I felt like she wasn’t a very good voice actor but idk if that’s what you’re talking about. I figured out written statements sound better bc they’re less spontaneous. If u try to write down a genuine speech it sounds awful and full of useless words/phrases
@StargazerSkyscraper
@StargazerSkyscraper 3 жыл бұрын
@@alessiapalma8823 Well, the problem for me (a native English speaker) is because it's very poetic and descriptive, in a way a real person retelling a traumatic experience wouldn't speak, especially to an investigator or archivist (i.e. "I felt the prickling damp flow in and out of my lungs; it was cloying and heavy..." and so on). Most people doing such a thing would try to be as very direct and literal as possible, without any flowery descriptors, similes, or metaphors to obscure the facts, because such things obviously don't help the case. Try telling a very personal and difficult experience of your own to a voice recorder app, play it back, and you may see what I mean. I don't think it's a language-specific thing, but more just something that certain people notice and others don't.

Sooo, let's discuss spoilery stuff for people on second hearing who know about those Lukas fellows. [SPOILER ALERT] Did she unwittingly kill him? She was a lonely person and the Lukas are drawn to lonely people. They started to get closer and closer and she didn't feel alone anymore. Then she proposed him and he shortly after died seemingly at random, from congenital causes. Is it possible that the Lukas hava a sort of kill switch that terminates them if they ever grow too attached to someone? Of all the Lukas Evan is the only one we see absolutely reject the lonely and apparently the entity took exception to that and made his fiancé very, very lonely.
@elizabethpemberton8445
@elizabethpemberton8445 2 жыл бұрын
I see it in a more ironic, tragic way. Evan, a very social, outgoing person, was a black sheep and outcast of the Lukas family. Naomi was pretty clearly marked by The Lonely, and Evan, social or not, was still drawn to her for that. Then he tried to save her from it - consciously or not - and almost succeeded. The Lukas family is stated later to dispose of its disappointing children. Perhaps they first thought that that nice Lonely girl would isolate Evan and pull him back to The Lonely, at least long enough to get a new generation going, but as Naomi began to make friends and even proposed to Evan, they gave up on that and decided instead to kill him - just another traditional disappointment disposal. Then they sent Naomi into The Lonely, from which she was able to escape only through actively defying the Lukases as an entity and thinking of Evan (thinking of a loved one is shown on several occasions to be effective in escaping The Lonely), perhaps hallucinating his voice and perhaps actually getting some sort of last message from him. But it seems likely that she'll be back there sooner than later. That all of this is in episode 13, before they had figured everything out Entity-wise, is quite impressive.
@biancamlf288
@biancamlf288 Жыл бұрын
@@elizabethpemberton8445 This is a bit off-topic, but Naomi's entire story is incredibly sad. Especially considering that she never does truly escape the Lonely until after 200. She deserved better. On that note, however, it is interesting how Evan fought so hard to not become his family only to have that be the potential reason for his demise. Doesn't deal with real world trauma, my ass.
@horizonpenblade1288
@horizonpenblade1288 6 ай бұрын
I definitely think the Lukases killed him for being close with someone, whether that was a supernatural kill switch or just murder/chucking him into the nearest fear domain im not sure. But yeah "congenital disease" is a great way to imply that the family killed him.
@Nizati
@Nizati 5 ай бұрын
I got the vibe that the family either killed him or he was a sort of sacrifice to keep in the Lonely's good graces. As she heard his voice in that forsaken place, it makes me think that his soul is unfortunately trapped within there now, and he made the ultimate sacrifice to push her out to freedom. If that is the case, I hope the mega-event in the end kinda freed him.
@melissaharris3389
@melissaharris3389 2 ай бұрын
Yes. I've always thought that Evan Lukas's 'congenital heart defeat' was Lukas family speak for actually having a heart. He was either banished to die in the Lonely by a family member or was killed directly by it for 'stealing' Naomi.

i had forgotten that part of the conceit of this podcast existing in audio form is that they're cassette tapes recording statements that can't be recorded digitally. idk why naomi seemed so offended by old audio formats. i had hoped we'd hear from the assistants at some point, so i'm glad to hear other voices on this show, much as i've been enjoying the regular narrator. naomi's voice actor did a lovely job with the story, but a nitpick that bothers me is that with the statements the narrator reads, i can suspend my disbelief and imagine that everyone who comes to the institute takes their time with their statements and organizes them into as coherent a narrative as the can as they're writing them down. with this statement given directly, i would expect a much more disorganized retelling, with all the er's and um's and self-corrections of trying to recall a memory. that said, this was a sad little ghost story. the reverse 'up' at the beginning with naomi and evan's romance was so sweet, and the unpleasantness with his the lucus family was really weird. the image of the endless graveyard was really vivid, and the voice of naomi's dead fiance guiding her back to safety was really lovely. i don't really think the way the narrator responded to her story warranted the way she stormed out? it didn't seem to me like he was being dismissive, he just told her what next steps the institute would be able to take and gave her advice that anyone dealing with grief and trauma could use. i think naomi's the second or third person to say that the institute is somehow disreputable, and i'm interested to see why that is!
@theprideling
@theprideling 3 жыл бұрын
I know I've commented this already but there's a good, in-universe reason all statements sound like a well-written story, even when they're coming directly from the subject. Of course it's fair that it takes you out of the moment and breaks your suspension of disbelief, but I promise that there's a payoff for this. There's hints of it throughout but they really smack you in the face with it on episode 100 hahaha

To everyone saying she sounds unnatural, you have clearly never spoken to an anti social loner who thinks they're above everyone else. They talk like this. spoilersss Why did Evan die? Was it due to supernatural causes? Was it because the Lucases just aren't meant to be in relationships - are they being punished with death if they are not alone? What did the Lucases want to do with Evan's body? Did they want him to accept the Lonely and become an avatar? Did he? The father said that his son is dead, so perhaps he didn't, but then, how could Naomi hear his voice? Did he sacrifice himself and became an avatar just to help his wife escape? That would make this episode even sadder...
@greygoose8803
@greygoose8803 Жыл бұрын
the fact that he died of a genetic heart issue, since his family is tied up with the lonely which he rejected, makes me think it was definitely the lonely lashing out at him at the prime moment to feed itself with naomi's resulting despair. maybe it even influenced them getting together since she leaned towards it even before they met. it just reminds me too much of gerard's dying of a sudden illness that happens to symbolically (as his cancer was in his brain, brain=knowing) tie into a fear that he was linked to but didn't properly serve as an avatar.

damn i like this show a lot but this episode really drags on doesn't it? like "i found myself lost on a road and i panicked... then i found myself lost in a graveyard and i panicked... then the chapel was an open field!" i dunno how to describe it. it's a very "and then and then and then and then" story instead of events naturally leading to each other. edit: after getting further into the show i do understand why a lot of this is relevant with later plot points but i still don't think this episode is a particularly well written one. not gonna ruin my overall opinion on the show though, it's typically pretty good

I know what you mean, like a haunted house more than a story. I think it's more noticeable in this story compared to others because of the number of unresolved threads or red herrings. The creepy family doesn't play a part after she leaves and it's hard to connect the events with the death of her fiance too. I think its because its stuff that you have to decipher in following episodes.

well the thing with supernatural and out of the ordinary stuff is that you're inclined to dismiss it as sth you've imagined or that can be easily explained in another way. quite like jon is doing almost every single time, which is an interesting and hypocritical stance from someone that works where he works. and the reason for this is because we as humans are inclined to fear the unknown or the unfamiliar so we try to explain it away. therefore let's say a regular random police officer wouldn't actually look for help in an investigation in a society of people documenting paranormal events, since that is something we associate inherently with it being dumb or impossible. like the institute doesn't hide what they're doing from the law or sth, but most people believe it's bullshit since this is the regular response we all have. and the number of people who have encounters with something possibly supernatural not only in tma but also in real life is much lower than the one of people who don't, so of course the majority wouldn't take them seriously. plus there are some other things that keep the institute specifically out of sight and out of mind when it comes to regular people but those are spoilers so I'm not gonna mention them. sorry for the rant, I just really enjoy this aspect of the story a lot and got carried away skdjfj

mild spoilers i guess I'm re listening for the 4th time now, and her comment about how Evan's casket seemed too big for him, combined with her experiences later in the story, may indicate that his family wanted to trap her in the coffin with him, almost as if to say ''you don't want to be alone? we'll make sure you aren't''. Might be nothing but it stuck out to me this time. Also given the Lucas family traditions it doesn't seem like something they would gladly do so to speak.

Her story is also one of the first looks into the much bigger picture too. If she had any idea how deep the Lucas family rabbit hole goes, would she have stuck around to try to get revenge? I really wish she came back. Edit: .... also curious if Peter was the father... iykyk. Might be why someone so in line with the lonely was able to take on another so easily.
