Yeah. I'd just add.. the formation of belief can be an emotional thing, but it doesn't have to be. I mean, it's practically impossible for emotions not to influence your beliefs on various occasions, but it certainly possible to develop a process of belief formation that protects against it. Part of the system I've developed is to treat most all knowledge I have as possibilities rather than concrete conclusions. I stands by ready to change them as soon as needed, and I NEVER associate my beliefs with my identity. I am not my beliefs. My beliefs are just representative of how much I think I know at the moment, and I might not always be comfortable with them either.

The one thing I have always found fascinating about The Corruption is how it feeds on toxic relationships. You have Jane Prentiss in Hive, the story of the guy with his "little beetle", this one. The way that preying on peoples need for love and affection can be diseased and corrupted and that is just as debilitating as a physical sickness.... I really appreciate that touch. Corruption stories are always some of my favourites.

You keep Gerry in this state against his will for years, but yeah, sure, Jon is the monster here. I'm so sick of people in this podcast having such wild double standards. - Daisy is different. she killed people, which is much better than giving them nightmares - you are a monster, but Helen isn't - you've been kidnapped 3 times in the last week? well, you don't know how bad it's been for ME! I am being held here against my will! do you know how much it sucks? - when were you going to tell us you eat people's trauma?! if I had a horrible secret, say, like, getting intel from the enemy and acting on it without any proof, I would totally tell you And, of course, my favourite: - can't Jon not charge into danger to try and save the world as I'm trying to sacrifice myself for his well-being?

That's what I love about this series, the people feel real and it's a lot harder to end up liking them all because of it. Aiming to please is just lying to yourself. Getting upset at characters for acting how they do is even better because that just adds to the realism. And at the same time, they have a point, and our protagonists have a point. They all are right and wrong at the same time. It's very brilliant writing styles.

Sounds like anti-intellectualism to me. The use of the word "just" implies that intelligence doesn't do anything _but_ make you better at lying to people. Which it can help with, I'm not saying it doesn't, but the benefits of higher intelligence outweigh such downsides. You can be both intelligent, _and_ open-minded as well. Not all intelligent people defend their bad ideas once challenged. Intelligence is simply a power that can be used beneficially, or abused. The quote honestly sounds like it came from a dumb person trying to insult someone smarter than them because they were jealous.

Daisy went from a character I hated because of how she used her job as an excuse to hurt people to a character I really love. She holds herself accountable understanding that The Hunt influenced her a lot and without it she would probably not have hurt people, she understands the things she did wrong and is working to be better - and the "Do you have any idea how much damage you can do if you’re a police officer who wants to hurt people? How much the system will protect you?" line which is great. @user-tf8xr8wc9u youre right, although I do think that she was someone with a penchant for violence, and she knows that, and that's why she was chosen by the hunt, but the hunt still made her violent desires stronger in a way that made it harder or impossible to resist where she might not have acted so aggressively if she hadn't been influenced by it? Like she knows and regrets that there's a part of her that was violent, but still, the hunt made that part much stronger, and while she might not have gone so far if she hadn't been selected by the hunt, she still holds herself accountable that she did bad things under its influence, and that she also was not a very good person even without the hunt

Ok this one got to me. I was raised in a cult, so hearing this description of them is... Reminiscent of some of the things I went through, even if it wasn't to that scale. The Dark seems to have the motif of an inverse Abrahamic faith; darkness where there was light, terror instead of hope, brackish sludge instead of holy water, et cetera. Similar to how Filth is frequently about love, or The Stranger adopts the circus as an aesthetic.

This episode strikes me the most because of the word AGAPE. I'm a closeted atheist studying at a Catholic School and we had Agape feasts every year. And we usually were told to say things that we love about each other, or God or the school. It's kinda nice, actually. I realized that religions and cults don't have much of the difference. The scale is just different, and in religion, since more people believe it, it becomes more valid. But both religion and cults has the sense of belonging that moves people together.

(this is coming from a lifelong atheist, whos parents are atheist as well, so correct me with im wrong here) but to me the only real difference between a religion and a cult is how much dammage it *requires* its members to do, both to others and to themselves. like there are some people who arent devout christians and will mostly just like say grace before dinner and whatnot, and that's most of the Christians i know. but with something like Scientology, there's no being like... casually a Scientologist, it's kinda all-or-nothing. those are just my feelings on the matter.

I know, I thought the same! I lived there for four years and it truly is the perfect place for an unsettling level of devotion. Most of the Bible Belt is, but... something about just how rural certain areas are, perhaps? I wouldn’t know. I’m going to have to do some research on the state’s past extremism! That’ll be... well, probably unnerving, but interesting. Thanks for the idea on how to spend my afternoon!

@@feathersoffancy8988 I recommend starting with the Covenant Sword and Arm of God Siege, our now governor Asa Hutchinson was attorney general at the time. His would be assassin was a mentor of the Oklahoma City Bomber and the date of that bombing coincides with the arrest date. It was also used as a model for ATF involvement with the Branch Davidians. However in the CSA siege the government actually listened to experts like me and they were able to stand down despite the CSA being far better armed and actively trained. Then you have both branches of the KKK, (KKK Inc vs KKK ltd) headquartered here as well as the Christian Identity Movement. They're the biggest players but there is also the meth rings, human trafficking, and whatnot that intersect with this. If you want any recommends or anything let me know. I would be happy to help!

IrishMorgenstern hey, I just wanted to say thank you again. I spent about five hours researching cults (especially what has spawned from the Christian Identity movement) and it was very enlightening. I was raised in an incredibly conservative and Christian environment and while I’ve broken away from much of the dogma, it was enlightening to see how close these extremely harmful doctrines were to ones that I heard and parroted for a while. I really enjoyed the experience and thought you should know!!

Coming back to this I really enjoy how they have a legitimate reason for coming after Jon. They dont know Gerry as a person, only as a resource and this guy, whom you've gone out of your way to help freaking takes it. I'd be pissed too 😂

???? They didn't come for the page, they came as an excuse to hunt. Even if he still had the lage, they were gonna kill him, clearly. The page was just an excuse to make the trip to him. They're clearly completely corrupted and united with the hunt atp and they tried to use John being "not human enough" to kill him without question. Either way, they only helped him in the first place because he just happened to be getting hunted by their target

God this speaks to me so much. I've worked in the film industry for a couple of years, and the vibe is always: 'follow your dreams, if you work hard enough, you'll make it!' But the truth is, the vast, vast majority of people, even the ones with legit talent who work their asses off, still never make it. So I quit and went back to school at 29 to become an engineer. I'm 31 now. 2 Years to go to complete my studies, and I've already landed a pretty nice job. It's not as exciting as the film industry, but the pay is good and the benefits are great. The scenario of waking up at 41 realising it's never going to happen was my nightmare. So yeah, in a way, I gave up on my dreams, but sometimes accepting mediocrity is a lot better than trying to claw your way out of an endless pit. I own a house and I get 5 weeks paid leave, and I'm still young enough to climb the ladder, even though I've lost my sense of ambition quite a bit. Better than joining a cult though.

I love Brandon Sanderson's lesson about this. I can't remember which video it was (it was over Skype for some writing program?) but he basically said "You can't do it; the whole 'things will work out if you follow your dreams and work hard' is a lie, but that doesn't mean it's worthless."

Oh I love the intro People really do have a hubris when it comes to cults Cults are in the core emotional and comforting Its the closest to the web, it is genuinely loving, it feels like a warm hug from your family. Because they become your family, they truly do love you and you love them Of course it was always a trap. The weaver makes the system of love and entrapment. The feelings are real. There is no lie in that and thats why its so hard to escape Love and faith makes you do horrible things and you are ignorant to all of it because YOU yourself justified it

ok so the start of this statement was literally attacking me, I mean everything they said was true because I am one of those 'smart people' you have no idea how many times I was let off easy because of some dumb shit I was spouting to justify my bad decisions, you may think it might be sensible but really it isn't, the worst part is I am incredibly self-aware of it. I know I can sway their opinion to my side if I am careful with my words. It's is incredibly easy to manipulate people when they think of you as 'intelligent.
