I have my grandfather's Mahabharata book. It was bought in year 1951 (or 1358 in Bengali year). It's price was Rs.7 (in 1951). It is written by Kashiram Das and it's the original edition. It may cost highest 10,000 Rs. In 2021. It has all the parts fully explained. I started reading it yesterday. It's condition isn't so good. I need a book stand to read it. By the way, I have Ramayana, translated by Krittibas Ojha. Who was the first translator of ramayana in Bengali. It's price was 12 Rs. I have Bramhabaibarta Puran, Shreematbhagbat Geeta, Bhaktmal Granth, Chaitanya Charitamrita too. And much more. (You may think that our house is a library 😂)

Wow, I finally came across somebody who examines the binding of books as closely as I do! I thought I was the weird guy who carefully examined the paper quality, binding quality, making sure the glue on the spine is fully filled and the cover of the spine is properly glued to the pages, and nothing is torn or folded or bent. I also like to smell the new books before I buy them. LOL Nice! Only one thing missing from these books is there is no fold line on the front cover to help open the front cover without pulling the cover all the way to the edge of the spine. If the folding line is not provided, over time, as you read the book, you keep pulling the front cover more and more, and it ends up ungluing the front edge of the spine. However, I don't think this is the BORI critical edition necessarily. Bibek Debroy has translated the Mahabharata in English, but there is nothing to relate his translation to the Sanskrit text published as the Critical Edition by BORI. I am interested in buying the original Sanskrit text Critical Edition published by BORI. If you know where I can buy it, please let me know. Thanks!

Ramayana is good to know about the ethics,morality and principles and so on but Mahabharata is something that fascinates me in an unknown way.I would love to get into the world created by Krishna.🙂

@@ReadwithsumitThis epic is a gem but u know we (specially in a Brahmin family) are not allowed to keep Mahabharata in the temple as we give esteemed place to Ramcharitmanas or Gita.It is may be a misbelief that it creates tension among family members.Having this epic in the house is considered inauspicious. But I personally don't think that it is true or worth to believe because if it was actually true than every house where there is The Ramayana in the temple had a Ram or a Laxman or a Sita.So as you see it is a little bit complicated.🙂

Yes I know but gita press books are not as authentic as these are gitapress has a lot of interpolations . Obviously I haven’t read both but that’s what I have found through my research on Mahabharata in past few days

The most enjoyable version of Mahabharata is a five volume masterpiece called 'पार्थ से कहो चढ़ाए बाण’ (written by Pannalal Patel) Unfortunately the Hindi version of this book can't be bought anywhere.

18 volumes - by Kishori Mohan Ganguly - loosely follow BORI CE - also in archaic English Language - the flow of translation is better (my opinion) 9 volumes - by Bibek Debroy - religiously follow BORI CE - the translation sometimes goes bonkers.

Brother if you are thinking of not reading the book set of MAHABHARATA right now then I suggest you not to buy them as normally there are two types of people who enjoys books:- 1)READING BOOKS 2)COLLECTING BOOKS AND KEEPING ASIDE,if this is the case with you then you will face problems in reading books as your mind will get deviated and confused on which book to read as there will be a plenty of them to read..... So,my best suggestion to you will be is that at first complete a book then proceed to buying then next one..... The above is my personal experience I purchased nearly 7-8 books of very much high thickness last year and later on felt bored in reading those books.......

In fact Geeta Press is not as "authentic" as you think it is. BORI CE is unanimously considered as original as it can get. Geeta Press also includes commentaries from Neelkantha - and Geeta press heavily relies on the manuscripts from Southern descension (omitting other significant altogether).
