Although polar bears and grizzly bears aren't all that similar and are definitely separate species, they can interbreed and create fertile offspring in the wild. Hank brings us the story of these misfit bears, which he likes to call grolar bears.

why are people shooting polar bears in the first place? wtf
@SliC3oFicE

derek du Because despite what American news stations tell you, there are tons of them and they like to wander into villages
@waynejohnson1786
@waynejohnson1786 9 жыл бұрын
derek du I'm guessing the dude paid to be able to shoot any bear that wandered to close to a town/village like SliC3oFicE said but there isn't "tons" of them just lots of these villages lay along their migration route so there's lots of them at certain times of the year like Churchill, Manitoba. All the polar bears will wait along the peninsula Churchill lays on in October and early November for the ice to freeze over so they can go get them tasty seals they love so much :P That's why it might seem like there's "tons of them" but in Churchill they got a polar bear jail, if a polar bear wanders into town they tranquilize it and keep it in "jail" till the ice freezes over so they can release them to go hunt :P You're not allowed to shoot them
@limafilho27
@limafilho27 9 жыл бұрын
SliC3oFicE Tons of them are not wandering into villages. Villages are the ones standing in their way.
@neatoburrito9045
@neatoburrito9045 9 жыл бұрын
limafilho27 The villages were there before the polar bears were. Didn't you watch the video? The polar bears have been migrating further south into territory that they never previously occupied. Territory that was previously dominated by grizzlies and thus resulting in interbreeding.
@neatoburrito9045
@neatoburrito9045 9 жыл бұрын
derek du The answer to your question is twofold: First, Polar bears migrating into new territory is actually very environmentally disruptive. You've heard of the food chain right? Well each respective natural habitat has one but now, because of climate change, some habitats are having an entirely new link added to them. And polar bears are exclusively carnivorous whereas other bears are omnivorous. Grizzlies for example will hunt but they are also known to eat seeds, berries, and roots. Polars only eat meat so adding a completely new apex predator to the mix throws thing out of balance. And wild Grolars is an even bigger problem because it is adding a second new predator to the mix! Grolars, from my understanding, have diets similar to Polar bears rather than Grizzlies. To put this in perspective, if you're from America you've probably heard that there are no snakes in Hawaii? Well that is true. And locals and custom officials take great care to ensure that doesn't change because if snakes were to be introduced to the island they would have no natural predators. Basically, the unnatural introduction of one animal that doesn't belong in a certain area could spell local environmental disaster. Second, SliC3oFicE is right. Polar bears migrating further south have been known to wander close to villages and towns. They are particularly aggressive as well. So hunting licenses are occasionally issued to target specific individuals. So you don't have people that are licensed to hunt the Polars en masse. You can request one if it has been spotted close to human settlements and that license is good for one kill only.

nordhorny Often, the crossing of species, where possible, is only doable with a male of species a and female of species b. And, changing a and b around may yield no result. For instance a Liger can only be made with a Lion and a Tigress. Won't work with a Lioness and a Tiger though. Hybrids like this are often sterile (very difficult for them to reproduce). Meaning Two Ligers, can't have another Liger. If we wanted another Liger. We would have to go back to how we got the first one.

1:42 Don't Asians, Mexicans, and Europeans have different morphologies, social behaviors, feeding behaviors, and metabolisms; are they different "species". I guess "species" is a pretty arbitrary distinction.
@KellyClowers
@KellyClowers 10 жыл бұрын
There are some differences in those things, but they are not large enough differences to make separate species. And the differences *within* each race are actually larger than the average difference *between* different races (we "see" race because of the *directionality* of those differences - and even that can be very iffy). So "race" ends up being much more a human construct than anything that has any scientific meaning.

Moon Maiden Sorry, but markonom, as much as I liked your comment, i don't understand. Care to elaborate - I do love having meaningful conversations. :) Now to Moon Maiden. Well, for a start, sis, I am not related to you. Then, I did not write you a book - I simply expressed my opinion in more than two sentences. Does this upset you? Then, your main point - typos don't evaluate intellect. Indeed, this is true, and would be a clinching point in your arguement, had it actually been relevant. Unfortunately, I never said either that you were stupid or that the typos were insulting your intellect. I merely pointed out that it was ironic. So, that kind of fell flat, didn't it? And, as you ignored all the points I made that you clearly had no answers for, we come to the last sentence. An insult (probably). I'm not really sure what this is trying to imply... I can guess if you like, or would you want to clarify? Though, to be honest, I think that your lack of motivation to read everything I wrote you is the most hurtful thing you've done so far.

If Nanulak was an actual Inuit word for polar/grizzly hybrids, then I'd probably support it (and I say 'an' because there are many different Inuit languages, it's like calling French 'Europese'). But seeing as it's a mashup either way, I'm going for Grolar bear and Pizzly bear, depending on parentage, with 'Grolar Bear' being the default.

so... this guy saw this grolar bear, has a bit of a doubt in his mind that it is indeed a polar bear, but still shoots the poor thing! something that also makes me feel like this is such a shame is that if he hadn't shot the animal and it was proven that it was a grolar bear it probably would have been tranquillised and sent to a lab. it would be so interesting to see these animals in their natural habitats. and something else that i think is a shame, is that anyone was given a license to shoot a polar bear!

the reason why DangerDolan and Buzzfeed are entertaining and successful is because theyre short, on point, only there to share the audio visual info and not to show off their selves or presentation skills. Reason why teachers use visual aids as much as they can is because they know they would be MEGA boring if they kept "yammering" about the subject with only their face on display!

Polar bears and Grizzlies are a lot more closely related than you say, the evolutionary separation happened only about 100,000 years ago, when certain grizzlies recognized that there was an un-tapped food source in the Arctic- seals.
