An excellent documentary but one that frankly left me a bit sad thinking about the course of development - what started as a team of friends, making games that they thought were fun just focused on making their thoughts a reality, became a full-fledged company dealing with bureaucracy and the "real world" - documentation, management, accessibility, moderation, translation, age verification, etc, and all as the game inevitably loses steam as players move on
@KillahMate2 жыл бұрын
Well, if it helps, I don't think anyone in the team regrets having taken that trajectory. They're still a small team of friends, and they're now stable enough that they can make whatever they want next, big or small. A little taste of the real world feels like an OK price to pay for that.

not the most relevant but i find it wild to go through this entire video and not hear any mention of the gmod gamemode 'murder' because its likely inspired heavily by the same stuff as among us, but its also genuinely just like among us EXCEPT it doesnt have tasks, it has items you collect to get a gun as any non-murderer, or you collect them to disguise as other players as a murderer. obviously theres more differences but when i play among us i cant help but think of the other game because ive always loved the other one, and it made me love among us even more. its genuinely impressive watching this video and hearing the team talk, cause i had no idea the team was _that_ small having to deal with this unprecedented attention and overload on them, and i really just think that thats super amazing!

i dont think even the devs could fully grasp just how many people were playing among us, its one thing to see the numbers, and quite another to go around the mall one day and find every single person playing among us on their laptop in every cafe or restaurant in the mall. i would see this trend everywhere, from malls, to parks, to cafes, to bookstores, and everywhere in between, and this all happened during lockdown season. everyone i know plays the game, even my mom plays it... its mind boggling.

I remember playing Among Us on my phone and on Steam and thinking "why isn't this game more popular..? This is original and imaginative and fun!" Then I forgot about it and went back to my other 1,200 games on Steam I owned at the time. I believe 4-6 months later some KZbinr or Twitch streamer started playing Among Us (this is before watching this documentary to refresh my memory) and the game BLEW UP, and I went oh yeah that game I thought was cool that nobody played.. Then several years later my wife's 9 year old boys are still watching youtube videos by the same YT personalities who play whatever is popular yelling at each other and overacting everything, and that's when you know a game is too mainstream. It's like that shoeshine kid giving you investing advice line, except with popular stuff. When your wife's children are watching something on youtube every day, that's when its mainstream. (also they watch the Henry Stickmen collection videos a lot too, also will not stop playing Gorilla Tag), basically any of the free games kids love. Because they cannot afford to buy anything. At least Among Us came from one of the best horror movies ever made, The Thing.

Been following the game growth when first streamers started to play and there was only 2.4K steam reviews and now look at it amazing. Brazilian streamers, Soapoppin, Other streamers jointing the group, Which lead to YT people to play and more streamers that are smaller. Then steam massive growth. Fucking insane mate, One of the games that I could not have believe when I bought the game would have gotten this popular. Among Us is really only fun if you have a voice chat going with friends. If you are playing a text only game with strangers, good luck. You're basically just going to deal with friends voting everyone else off at every opportunity, and whoever is the quickest typist will control the entire discussion since folks will vote based on whoever accuses first within the first 4 seconds of the vote. It's a bit of a mess. Playing with friends and/or with a voice chat, though? A blast. Loads of fun.
