In this behind-the-scenes video, meet Dartmoor shepherd Russell Ashford, Fern the fabulous sheepdog, and the film’s creators: purpleSTARS!
purpleSTARS brings together artists and technologists with and without learning difficulties or disabilities to transform museum experiences and make them truly inclusive. purpleSTARS was commissioned by the Earley Charity to design interactive exhibits for The MERL. This included a quad bike that visitors can sit on whilst wearing a virtual reality headset, enabling you to truly see what’s it like to be a modern-day shepherd today.
purpleSTARS was created following ‘Sensory Objects’, a project which worked with people with learning disabilities as co-researchers, with researchers from the University of Reading departments of Art, Biomedical Engineering and RIX Research and Media at the University of East London, making museum interpretation together through a series of sensory art and electronics workshops.
