I once owned one of the best Pelikan m400 pens on the planet, she accompanied me through college, she helped me overcome many difficult papers, she left a lot of traces of me as a human being, I think she is the spokesperson of the pen, I wipe the pen over and over again when I am bored, all in all she is the perfect German masterpiece

As a Pelikan "fan" I really enjoyed watching this video. I've collected fountains for many years and have always found Pelikan to be my favorite. They may sit in the pen cup for a month, but when put to paper, they never skip or miss a stroke. IMO, the best in the world. Well worth the prices charged.

In 1957 while serving in the RAF in Germany, I purchased a PELICAN 140 pen from the Pelican shop in Oldenburg. This pen has been in continuous use by me ever since. Some years ago the factory serviced my pen and fitted a new cap nut. This pen has never leaked or let me down in any way. A quite superb pen!!!!!

I have the good fortune to own a number of Pelikans - from the 1940's to present day. Undoubted German quality build; flawless writing experience (tho' I do appreciate that some users have commented to the contrary) - thus far, I've never had a dud nib from this fine manufacturer. My only conflict with Pelikan, was their decision to cease in the creation of their oblique & double/triple broad nibs - but of course, market research seems to predicate that most fountain pen users will select a Fine or Medium blade; this is disappointing, so (we) must purchase previously owned - which, in certain respects is no, bad thing - seemingly, the quality of vintage gold/steel nibs handle better - tho' that again, is a subjective interpretation. That said, they are without doubt one of my favourite brands (& four out of my top five are German makes). Thank you so much for this tour, Joost !! :D

The video narrator keeps saying “made by hand”, even though the hands are mostly inserting parts into machines that are doing most of the work. What is happening (in the gold nib line) is that human eyes are checking the machine work at just about every step. A very high level of quality control. And quality control really does matter and is worth paying for. The best machines mess up sometimes, but my guess is that the machine can do a better job of operations like welding a tiny irridium ball onto the tip of a nib. I would really love to own one of these pens. I think they are not unreasonably priced for what they are, especially the models in the middle of their line up. I am a little puzzled however about how you put an ink cartridge in a piston pen.

I have heard that pelikan nibs can be inconsistent, but how would that happen if they are tested this well?
@aidanbernal5 жыл бұрын
probably because every time someone has an issue, they complain about it. But when it works fine, they usually will go on using it without saying anything, which kinda leads to an imbalance of feedback especially online.
@caomhan845 жыл бұрын
Well, it's all anecdotal. Out of my 5 Pelikans, 3 have had nib issues (misalignment or baby's bottom). Meanwhile, I have 7 Pilot pens and none have had any issues at all, but people online constantly complain about how bad Pilot's nibs are these days. So it really does depend.
@arunabhalahiri49315 жыл бұрын
@@caomhan84 So all depends on luck. I have 2 pilot metropolitans and 4 vintage tanks but cant write with any of them, the nib feels very draggy and some borderline scratchy. the Lamy safari i got had a horribly dry nib, For some reason i have pretty nice luck with parker vectors. If i ever buy a pelikan or other high end pen i would buy it from vendors who offer nib tuning.
@caomhan845 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's the way to go. Ask the vendor to check it. Buy from a nibmeister if you can. In general, Pelikan's nibs are very good....wet and smooth. They just tend to overpolish like a lot of manufacturers do today. That's their biggest issue....well, that and the wild variance in their nib grading (i.e. if you want an F, buy an EF; if you want an M, buy an F etc.) But I don't know if the newest pens have cleared that up. The pens are a joy to own and write with, and they're truly bulletproof and easy to clean thanks to the screw-out nib units. But to make sure you get what you want, buy from a dealer who tests the nib rather than saving money through Ebay (though I certainly understand that approach, too).
