NEW PEN DAY // PELIKAN M800 // Is this the best pen ever?

I first got a Pelikan 800 in the late 90s. It has been one of my favorite pens ever since.

I have the Pelikan M1000 and M800 and can see the ink level in the bottom quarter inch of the barrel. Only the bottom quarter inch of the barrel is truly translucent. When empty, hold your pen up to the light (or use a flashlight), and you can easily see the translucency. When the pen is full of ink, you will only see the translucency when the pen is almost empty.

An impressive acquisition. Congratulations. I'd say, "Enjoy." but you obviously already do. Regarding the opacity, you might use your scale to determine ink level. I've seen some others determine fairly accurately the amount of ink inside, subtracting the weight of the pen.

Yes - and you could weigh the cap instead of the uncapped pen and get the weight of the body without putting the pen at risk. Enjoy your beautiful new pen!

Great idea! And I think, over time, you'll get a feel for when your ink level is getting low. Hard to explain but it's almost like you'll get a sense by the weight in your hand if that makes any sense - npi 😂....

Yes, I think I would sell the other two and get another M800 because the size looks perfect, and I actually prefer the opaque, it doesn't take away anything.. I don't care about needing to see the amount of ink, I prefer opaque pens, except from my TWSBI ecos

No ink window? Hmm.... I've got some Opus 88's that are dark enough to make it hard to see the ink level. I think the next time I clean them I'll jot down their empty weights. I keep a digital scale on my desk for postage. Why squint when you can gauge remaining ink with the same inexorable force black holes use to devour galaxies? (Gravity...)

Congratulations to your great pen. I'm amazed a lot by my M800 (blue, F nib) and hope you will have as much fun with yours as I have with mine. I don't think that you will miss the ink window much. I got used to non-windowed pens after receiving my Hongdian N12, and this happened quite fast. Have an amazing year 2025 ... 🎉

I have the Pelikan Souveran M805 Fountain Pen Stresemann Anthracite Fine and it’s one of my favorites! It’s just so smooth and feels good in my hand. I ended up getting mine from cult pens

Yay! 🎉 Congrats on the new pen! I'm totally with you. I have a few M600/605's but the M800/805 is my favorite. It's such a great fit so, while I still use my M600/605 (In fact, I have a couple of them currently inked), I definitely gravitate towards my 805. I think the M1000 would be a bit too much but I have my eye set on a couple more M800/805's - one of them being the brown/black too! Such a handsome, classy pen. Yes I believe they are - with the changes in the materials, any pens produces from I believe 2022 (I may be wrong) will no longer be transparent.

Very nice, and glad to hear you love it (as opposed to "it's ok, I expected more"). I've been thinking about getting the m600 for years, also green stripes. But the price jump in the last few years is a turnoff. As a fellow Canadian, shopping for these sucks (local stores prices are insane, customs is a lottery). Also, I just can't decide between EF and F, as you won't swap it like Lamy steel nibs. I lack a friend to try them! Then I learned last year they announced no more semi translucent body, which they had for about a century. Nooooo!! Missed out on that one.

Yeah it is disappointing that the translucent barrel is no longer on their modern pens. As for swapping nibs, the nib unit actually comes unscrewed very easily but M800 nibs are quite expensive.

I've got a m 805 Stresemann just in time.. - still in the translucent style. I bought it at the stationary store with a M nib, it was fun, but too wet for daily writing. When I visited the Tintenturm at Hannover I could try out several nibs until i found one in EF, which is a little stubbish(!!). I enjoy to write with it every single day, because it is so smooth with the right amount of feedback! On that day I could also try out the M 1000. It is such a beauty and writes like heaven. Now I'm dreaming of this pen😢 and saving the money😊. As I don't own a pilot or sailor pen... can you please tell me: what is the difference in the writing experience between m800 and these pens?? Lucky you! As for feedback smoothness - Pilot is so smooth that it glides on the page, whereas Sailor has more feedback than a Pelikan (in my opinion - not everyone may agree!).

I have the M800 in blue/black with an extra fine nib. Love it. Did you try the M1000 ? I have that one in green/black with a fine nib that writes almost like a broad because of the size and the bouncyness. ;) Happy writing with your new pen ! :)

Oh Karyna! Your new M800 is stunning; I love the black/green so much! I just can't get over the nib; that thing is a work of art in and of itself! I definitely think it would be a good deal for you and also the buyers to sell your two smaller Pelikans in order to get your second M800 in black/brown. With as comfortable as the M800 is for you, it wouldn't make sense to do it any other way!

Re: min 16, not true, you Can see the ink level but it is very tinted. Just look again in broad daylight. Only in limited editions like the burnt orange you cannot.

Honestly? I think you should go for it. It's sad when a pen isn't as loved as it could be. If you can find a loving home for the other two Pelikans, I think that would be ideal. The M800 is my grail pen right now.

The Pelikan nibs run very broad compared to Sailor or Pilot so a Medium Fine would actually be closer if not finer than the Pelikan EF.

To answer the question posed: No, Pelikan M800 is not the best pen ever (and, there may be no "best pen"). I have more than 20 Pelikans, including 2 M800s and an M1000. They are excellent pens, but if they were the best ever, I wouldn't also own Pilots, Platinums, Viscontis, Montblancs, Leonardos, Parkers, Watermans, Franklin Cristophs, Auroras, &c. For me, the way to judge fountain pens is based on their many qualities: Materials, quality of workmanship, esthetics, ink capacity, ease of maintenance, ink flow, and pleasure of use. Which is to say, there IS no "best pen;" there are excellent pens, there are mediocre pens, and there are bummer pens.
