It seems like a lot of people outside of Denmark think that Carlsberg only makes one kind of beer, I guess they need to make some more ads with Mads Mikkelsen to educate the world. Carlsberg makes all sorts of things, they even have their own "upscale" brand called Jacobsen (the name of the Carlsberg founder) so they make everything from alcohol free beer to the "normal" Carlsberg that everyone knows and to more craft beer styles. It seems like most people outside of Denmark only know about their standard pilsner though so I guess there's plenty of marketing left to do. :)

So, Carlsberg "invented" lager? That's funny... ever heard about a quaint Czech town called Pilsen?

While pilsner is older than Carlsberg it wasn't the first lager either. Lagers were brewed in Bavaria long before that hence the name. Lager is a German word for storage. Pilsner Urquell hired a German brewer to make their lagers. Pilsner Urquell is probably the first commercially successful pale lager brewery though. Anyway, that claim by the lady is ridiculous.

Im danish an believe what they mistook the special yeast E.C. Hansen cultivated at Carlsberg as the first in the world. The yeast called Saccharomyces carlsbergensis here you can learn all about it
