I just got the Steelbook in from the UK. One of my absolute favorite Steelbooks of the year and worth the extra shipping from overseas.

Check out The Big Sleep. It’s a Phillip Marlowe movie. Sam character Liam Neeson is playing. Big Lebowski was heavily inspired by it. In a Lonely Place is another good Bogart noir.

This movie is one of his best!! His others just a few Casablanca, High Sierra, African Queen, Key West, The Treasure Of Sierra Madre… I can go on and on. You have to watch this movie a few times to fully get the plot and things you miss watching it the first time. A 2-3 or more viewing of this classic is a must!!!

PLEASE take more time with Bogart. If I could recommend a couple of his films, I would immediately point you to The African Queen and In a Lonely Place. They are both utterly fantastic! I am really looking forward to picking up these Warner 100 releases. I’m curious to see what they’ll announce next. I hope you’re doing well, Ken! :)

Ken, I knew you weren't going to to a fan of this movie. Of the three that you mentioned, Cool hand Luke' will be your favorite, you heard it it first. You should check out 'The Treasure of the Sierra Madre', I think you will like that one and also 'High Sierra', The Caine Mutiny' and you might like 'The African Queen' as well. Bogart was considered the first anti-hero in films.

Come on Ken!!! We realize you're never gonna love these movies from the 40s because there's not enough bloody, headless, zombie cheerleaders in them. LOL. The last Bogart movie I think you might like is Treasure of the Sierra Madre. It's kinda a western and has greed, mistrust, back stabbing, and murder in it.

Been A Bogart fan forever!! He never had a bad performance. That's how good/legendary he was💯💯 you really need to check out more bogart films Ken. I've seen his first film petrified forest to his Last film.. the harder they fall. I really hope the treasure of the sierra Madre gets a 4k treatment💯💯 you should check that film out along with the Caine mutiny as well as being in a lonely place 💯

Some movies, some actors are like acquired taste. I did not like wine many decades ago, but the wine grew on me. So what you "dismiss" today, may be will be great for you in several years. Great review.

I really like this movie, too. Honestly, I agree with your thoughts on Bogart. I've seen him in 9 or 10 movies. Most times, he's one of the weaker parts of the film. I have seen one great performance from him, though, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

The best part about this film to me is wondering why Sam Spade was so attracted to this conniving snake of a woman who even killed his partner. But it’s because he lived on the fringe of the law himself and liked her darkness. but in the end with his great monologue when he “sent he4 up the river” he was not talking to her. He was trying to convince himself because he knew she would double cross him later if need be for her.

M wife and I really dig this movie, along with several Bogart films. Looking forward to upgrading this one. In regards to Lorre, you gotta see the fun, tongue in cheek film The Raven by Roger Cornan, starring Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre, wnd a very young Jack Nicholson. It's a btt slow but a cool wizard vs wizard Saturday aftetnooon classic.

I understand where you are coming from with Bogart. I personally like him better as a villain or complicated character like Treasure of Sierra Madre and The Desperate Hours (very underrated film and highly recommended) and In a lonely place. Thanks for your honest review.

My favorite Bogart movie is a noir called Dark Passage, also a San Francisco movie, the first third of the movie or so actually takes place in a first person view. He plays a bad person, and I think that fits Bogart the best because of his demeanor. If you don't jump on board with him from this movie, then I don't know if you ever will.

Humphrey Bogart is impossible to not enjoy in The African Queen. He will click in that film and you will be engaged imo. As to why B&W looks so good in 4k, several reasons. b&w film stocks of that era in general were significantly sharper/finer grained that color film, greater exposure latitude, and much better archival/storage properties resulting in less deterioration and aging over the decades. And so tailor made for looking great digitally.

I'd also recommend seeing Bogart in "Dead End" from 1937, another film beautifully photographed in B&W. Bogart is more like a co-lead in this film, which also starred Joel McCrea, Sylvia Sydney, Claire Trevor, and the original Dead End Kids. There isn't a 4K version of this film yet, but if you're looking for another Bogart film with a great cast and story, "Dead End" is a great pick as well.

I didn't think the characters were very interesting. Double Indemnity is a way better film noir. I gave it a 3/5. Just wish it had engaging characters. Bogart is OK, but not a favorite of me. I also agree that the plot revolving around the Falcon did not connect.
