The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

@@wizzytrend Singer Michelle eating banana and them casually talking is on purpose because the band wanted to do live singing but show didn't let them so they retaliate passive aggressive way by letting people know it's not live. Something similar happened with Nirvana band where some UK show required them to use pre-recorded back tracks but with live vocals so the singer Kurt on purpose sang in low voice and not touching his guitar and the legend himself Dave Grohl the drummer hitting cymbals at random and just dance. It's the best way to show middle finger to these show while also being legally binded to perform...why ask bands to perform if you're not letting them.

You should check out the performance when Nirvana was supposed to lip sync once and refused. As a compromise, Kurt was allowed to sing live, which he took advantage of by singing in a really bored manner and with a absurdly deep voice. And he didn't even play his guitar, while Krist (bass) went completely nuts and Dave just hit his drums completely randomly. It is absolutely hilarious, especially when you have heard the song a lot..

Sullivan never let groups lip sync. His sound crew was notoriously horrid, so big groups like the Mamas and the Papas, Rolling Stones, etc. would bring their own sound people. First- it sounds like they are lip syncing, second- it was just a little too casual. It is an insult to the audience and to Sullivan to talk to each other during filming and for Michell to be eating the banana, third- them grabbing props and moving them around in the middle of the song looks unprofessional and disorganized. I think because there was truly a feeling of "hope" that the world could become a "better place", whatever that means, and that music could be a big part of making that happen. Looking back on it now, it was probably naive, grandiose, and silly, but that kind of thinking was in the air for artists and young people who listened to the music. I am of that era (born in 57), so yes the nostalgia is so strong it hurts at times to listen to these songs and watch the performances. And I'm sure there are many talented musicians being born today who would be capable of creating songs like this, but unfortunately most of the stuff you hear on mainstream playlists today are pure, unadulterated autotuned garbage.

.. It sounded like the girls mics were "on" .. I did hear Cass singing an extra note near the end of the song .. .. As for acts on Ed Sullivan, it was a mix between live singing and lip syncing .. For example, the Dave Clark Five always lip synced their performances, whereas The Beatles sang live .. it just depended on the performer ..

Sometimes the backup singers would pre-record a "live" track while the main singer would be live on a solo mic. It's hard to tell sometimes with these Sullivan performances. At 1:09 it looks like John is speaking about something as his lips do not match the words and it seems like you can almost hear him.

It is probably pretty annoying for young people today when old people tell them how good things used to be... I believe the obvious question is who f-ed it up? If times changed for the worse during the prime of life, are not you to blame? Unless you are one of those folks that only enjoys being a Boomer when it is about a classic rock song or avoiding fighting in Vietnam or whatnot. Hey kids, it was this guy and his votes for snake-oil salesmen and actors to constantly give reaaaalllly rich people subsidies they do not need. But, my guess is Walt will blame, um hold on lemme check Fox News' chyron really quick, he will blame people from El Salvador this week. Next week, he will be assigning blame to my niece and nephew's Generation, and they are 6 and 3 years old, respectively. Boomerbuddy, look in the mirror. That is your answer. LOL. And tbh, I had a fuckin' rocking '90s childhood in Kentucky, man. But I don't quite get your point... just because I would play SNES or N64 on a rainy day, doesn't mean my childhood was ruined, right? Brother, I had fun you couldn't imagine, most of it outdoors in the gorgeous Bluegrass region of KY. So lovely. Also, I just re-read your comment. It is weird that you think G-d created you at a specific time or something so you could listen to the Mamas & The Papas. You should read the Bible, my friend. It ain't about you, dummy. I'm pretty sure you are not mentioned. Hold on, ummmmmm, flipping pages, nope. I do not see "@Walt222" in God's grand plan ha! Later HOMO (sapien).

Ed Sullivan had the knack of harnessing the very best of musical talent back in the 1960s and this 1967 rendition is typical. This is such a classic, that it is difficult to comprehend that it was released a lifetime ago, topping the charts in 1965, when I was still a student in 4th year architecture at UNSW, but then it was the '60s, beginning the halcyon period for popular music and Humanity itself, with the boffins citing 1960-90 as the zenith period for our species, never to return, so make the most of all from that time. The Mamas & Papas were the supreme exponents of group harmony, and still lead a very competitive pack with the Beegees and Beachboys nipping at their heels, but a key line in their massive hit "Dedicated to the One I Love", (each time I pray for you my baby) still rates in my humble opinion as the epitome of perfect harmony in a wealth of purveyors in that three decade period that is poorly missing in century 21 music. Sadly their time ended with the untimely death of Cass Elliot in 1983, prompting the pundits to laconically say that if Mama Cass had given that sandwich to Karen Carpenter, they would both still be with us today. Be that as it may, we have the legacy of their audial creativity 57 years on from a time in the USA, when life was peaceful and mass gun violence was unheard of, and my lengthy double greyhound bus circuit time there in 1978 remains etched in my memory half a century on. Enjoy this & all the wonderful musical contributions of the Mamas & Papas.
