Constant high water has been eroding the city of Venice for decades. The plan to build a surge barrier against the tides that cause the so-called "Acqua Alta" has been underway for nearly forty years, but only now is the massive 7-billion-euro surge barrier nearing completion.

This series tells the story of how huge objects move. If Archimedes said "Give me a lever and I will move the world", today the answer is usually wheels and hydraulics. Lifting and moving massive machinery or structures is the speciality of a handful of companies and the equipment they use is often tailor made for the job, be they cranes, trailers, flatbeds, barges, and even ship carriers.
We draw on the joint experience, to present a whole new ongoing series of documentaries on the men and machines that move huge things. Heavy Lift tells the story of the engineers and mechanics behind some of the largest lifting and moving equipment in the world, without which some of the most impressive works of human construction simply would not work.

I saw something recent about the floodgates that when they were in the upright position debris or sediment would collect in the space where they're supposed to retract into causing the gates not to fully close. They cannot seem to find a way to prevent that.

The government should have started by banning them from pumping ground water like crazy and distort from messing nature's balance. In this day and age, we have hundreds of ways to get water for industrial use. They just choose the easy old way. They should contribute on salt water desalination projects at list.

And all that hot air you fart through that big mouth just makes those smelly brain farts you bray out while sounding like the jackass you obviously are. Your moronic jingoistic mockery of intelligent banter that leaks from your blowhole like the jism you yank out of a filthy body no other human would approach with a ten foot pole, and even then, only in an attempt to put you out of your misery little man! But you spread that misery to descent human beings just by opening that silly piehole. Try to keep it shut so the vacuum in your tin plated excuse for an empty head only useful to wrap your aluminum foil headpiece! Now F O and let the adults talk about things you can't even dream to comprehend!

I am very astonished with the scale of this project and dwtermination of the engineers. But can some body tell me how can this prevent high tides coming to the city? Such structures became successful in Holand to prevent flooding and not high tide. This structure might prevent the city from a gashing high speed. High tide is not a flood, it is a gradual process of rise in ocean floor and the water will some what find a way to enter the lagon. Isn't the long term and sustainable solution reclaiming the habitat and invest on sea water desalination plants rather than pumping ground water like crazy? The proffesor talking about pumping water to the ground cavities seems to have an Idea but It will be fruitful only if the greedy Peter companies stop pumping ground water and disrupt nature's balance. May God help Venus for another 500 years or so.

Venice is built on literal swamp land anyway. Not expecting it to sink under the weight of the cities various structures is just insanity, never mind the rising sea levels. Venice was originally built by an ancient celtic tribe, but the huns sacked it and colonized the area IIRC. The swampy region afforded the Atila some defensive measures against incursions from aspiring conquerers.

Sea levels have risen in my lifetime on the Texas coast line by a staggering amount. Highway that used to go along the coast for a hundred miles are gone. Land owners have lost land mass for cattle grazing to this ocean invasion. Tell me that the environment is not changing. I believe that humans are responsible for this change. But yet at the same time I believe that the earth has been going thru this evolution many times throughout the life times of planet evolution.
