I am from an albanian village in montenegro where we used to build exactly the same, the house of stone, pavements of stone and the walls around the property with stone and the same hight. Limestone powder to make the white paint. When i see this video it makes me feel that I am back home. And yes you are right this old houses used to be cool in the summer and warm in the winter, the stone walls used to be 50 cm wide and acted like an insulation. But I would like to say one thing this buldings did withstand some terrible earthquakes and what took them down where not the earthquakes but water. After those homes where left by there owners and started to have water leakes those strong walls that lived threw all those earthquakes finally caved in. Just watching this video I feel I am home, back in time.

I seen Ulqin City while was Holliday. Exactly same but I’m sorry why Albanians left mostly that land. I heard Albanians started coming back building their houses again but people don’t really like that even talk about this because they different tribes. Hopefully Albanians are back investing because belonging to Eagles that land as native Albanians calling them self.

Thank you for your wonderful description of stone homes. I recently started watching these videos. Some of these homes in the videos must be centuries old. I live in Southern California. We own a home in Orange County. It is a wood frame California ranch style house on a cement slab. It is considered old in the area, but was only built in 1964. We also own a ranch in the San Bernardino Mountains. The pioneer cabin there is one of the oldest structures in the mountains there. We almost lost it in the El Dorado fire in 2020. It has ghastly a stone foundation. The construction was very feeble. The walls are board and bat. No frame, just board and bat walls. Barely strong enough to hold up the roof. And it won’t hold it up much longer. If it was well built, we would make the investment in trying to save it, but as is, it would take more money than we have to rebuild it. It was built cheaply and fast because the land was a homestead. The original owners got the land for free by filing under the homestead act. They had to build a house and plant crops within 5 years. And they did! The cabin is falling down, but the magnificent old apple orchard they planted in 1912 is still thriving with delicious heirloom apples. If they had built a beautiful stone house like in the video, and like you described, we would move heaven and earth to save it! I am so impressed with this man’s stone masonry skills and his incredible work ethic. It’s a lot of extremely hard work, but it will still be standing for many generations if we’ll maintained.

dry stack as in Brittan is a different style of masonry equally difficult to do well but essentially just piling rocks, the previous mason here had skill which becomes obvious compared to original repairs which attack the eye . i hope this person has skill but i have only seen demolition so far . he is doing the demolition properly though sorting his faced stones from the fill cleaning the site and doing a lot of labor now to save a lot of time and labor later ;]

watched more...he is good but not a master mason yet he needs to get better in stone selection , he rely s on small filler stones to level and stabilize compared to the original mason who found better fits or shaped what he had to fit. and agreed will have to watch the next videos as well

@David Eugene E dry stone works well as fencing in england but i think you will want a less breathable wall , structural stone building has design limitations ,,,you end up with 2 foot thick walls and it is not the easiest material to shape. if you work with its limitations it will work well . most stone work today is a non loadbearing veneer and there is another system for the structures support . i dont have channels or videos i can reccomend off the top of my head and i have to admit i am not a mason so at best its just an architectural opinion . look for videos where the person setting the stone ...1 looks for the right stone out of the pile ... 2 makes the stone fit by shapeing it not jaming little ones to fill in. 3 fairly even level courses without vertical seams . there building a castle in france called gedilon you might watch those vids . les jeromes have a chateau there working on , mostly talk to stone masons if you can find any there no longer a common breed. looking at other examples is a good idea , and talk to an architect what you want might be the same as the million dollar auto restoration of a lada ,,,,just not worth the cost time or effort....good luck with it and put it on video if you get around to it ;]

@@dianaeggen2434 This was not built to be sturdy. Only 3/4 walls are just stone and nothing holding it together but other stones. Just a small earthquake would make those crumble. those 3 walls will have water leaks and wind will blow straight through.

Amazed at all of these videos but some times disappointed we don't see the finished product. What mystifies me is why the outdoors is attended to before the house is finished. I can see why for sewer & pipes but not for the decorative aspect. Bricks must be very cheap as they cover them up 9 times out of 10 with mortar. But perhaps that's because they don't use gyprock for walls like we do in NA. Would love to see where all that rubble goes!
