Hi , is there metaphor in line.. but ranged as infantry???
@iswearenglish4 ай бұрын
the word as would make it a simile ranged is used with the meaning or arranged and the meaning of at the distance of infantry (100 metres?) ..... I suppose it is a simile, but it is a very weak one

@@iswearenglish Thank you for your response. I am a student at a university in the Middle East where English is not the primary language, and I am studying English literature. We were asked to analyze this poem, and one person claimed that there is a metaphor in the verse. I wasn't convinced, but the AI responded in this way. I hope you can provide a genuine answer if you have one.

AI --- "But ranged as infantry," There is an implied metaphor. The word "ranged" (lined up) not only describes the soldiers being arranged in rows literally, but it also carries a figurative connotation. Here, the word is used to imply that they are placed in a combat position facing each other as enemies, reinforcing the idea that they are merely tools in the machinery of war. The metaphor here lies in the fact that the soldiers are not just physically lined up, but they are also lined up in their roles as enemies, which would not have happened if it weren't for the war that imposed this situation on them. In other words, the alignment as infantry here is not just physical but also figurative, as it expresses their alignment in confronting each other as enemies. ---

Dear Sir, Would you please explain the “he’d ‘list” bit in more detail, viz. what are the rules, why a few letters had been ‘taken away’ from the word ‘enlist’.. is it appropriate in poetry, in what circumstances..?
@iswearenglish2 жыл бұрын
My name is Alex. The apostrophe represents the letters taken away and not vocalised. It is used in poetry to reduce the number of syllables to make the words fit the meter (rhythm) of the poem. It is very old fashioned and poets today very rarely use it. Today it is only seen in don't won't I've He'll ... or to indicate how someone is speaking ..... somethin' (indicating the g has not been pronounced)
