Instructor Bio
"Kai Tomas is the head instructor and owner of the Ludus Ferocia Historical Combat school in Norfolk, Virginia. Since the age of 14, Kai has been a student of swordsmanship and has been instructing Kenjutsu and HEMA disciplines since 2005. Starting in the Japanese sphere of swordsmanship and later entering into the HEMA space has given him a unique perspective on how the two communities are both similar and different. Ludus Ferocia is a club that tries to facilitate the exchanges of these cultures through the studying of historical documents and friendship sparring. Along with kenjutsu, the club teaches various HEMA disciplines such as longsword, messer, dagger, saber, and spear.
Kai also operates Applied Defense Concepts, a company focused on personal defense skills through the study of gunfighting, knife fighting, and hand-to-hand combat. ADC currently teaches classes in Norfolk VA to civilians, law enforcement, and the US Military. Kai started this company with a goal to empower regular people with life-saving defensive skills but has since had a hand in training our nation's elite warriors within the special operations community. Kai also co-designed a specialized EDC knife called the Tie Breaker CQC, used for entangled fighting. He also designed the Combative Edge knife defense system, a class expressly for surviving knife attacks.
From 2013 to 2023, Kai was an active fugitive recovery agent (bounty hunter) and private investigator. Through his misadventures hunting criminals and spying on cheating spouses, Kai got to add new skills and friends to his growing collection of both. , also becoming well-versed in tracking, surveilling, and apprehending wanted fugitives. As Ludus Ferocia grew in popularity, Kai began to withdraw from his duties as a bounty hunter and focused more on being an instructor and business owner.
Currently, Kai is ever-focused on being a good student in all the disciplines he takes interest in. At the time of this video's release, he is in the process of moving Ludus Ferocia and ADC into their very first central location. Humbly, he always tries to continue learning and experiencing the worlds of historical combat, business, and the warrior lifestyle. "
