The Man in the Passage Yard (1971) Episode 1

Detective is a special genre in cinema; films of this genre are always distinguished by their vivid intrigue, action-packed plot, special musical accompaniment, vivid characters and heroes that are memorable. We bring to your attention the premiere of a four-part feature detective film filmed in 1971 at the Film Studio named after. A. Dovzhenko directed by Mark Orlov based on the story of the same name by Dmitry Tarasenkov. The film was released in 1972.
In a small Baltic resort town, former Soviet partisan Grigory Mikhailovich Yushkov, who came on vacation, was killed. He was hit on the head with brass knuckles in the entrance yard. It turns out that the murder is connected with the death of a partisan detachment and Soviet underground fighters in 1944. They were given to the Nazis by a provocateur nicknamed “Centaur.” The investigation is being conducted by the local KGB department. Senior State Security Lieutenant Boris Varaksin is sent from Moscow to assist the investigation. Since no one in town knows him, he can act without revealing himself. Under the guise of a student who wants to work as a sailor on a fishing boat on a herring expedition, Varaksin checks into the Endla hotel in a triple room where the deceased lived. He meets people who were in one way or another connected with Yushkov and checks them for involvement in the murder. After working through several leads, Varaksin identifies the killer. "Centaur", having remained to live in the same city after the war, worked as a commuter bus driver, and Yushkov recognized him. The “Centaur” is caught red-handed when, in the same passage yard, he tries to kill another person who exposed him, the sailor Voitin. Along the way, state security officers expose a local gang of thieves and speculators.

Soon after the premiere of the television film, in the second half of the 1970s, both the scriptwriter Dmitry Tarasenkov and the director of photography Vladimir Davydov emigrated to the United States. Thanks to the leitmotif of the film - the positive image of a KGB officer exposing a Nazi henchman who was hiding after the end of the Great Patriotic War, the film was not “shelved”, however, in copies of the film broadcast on television, the names of emigrants were removed from the credits, as a result of which the positions “script author” and There is no “director of photography” in them.
The film was shot in Estonia. The viewer can observe the silhouettes and views of the streets of Old Tallinn. Therefore, settlements and a number of heroes received Estonian names. The “passage yard” that gives the TV movie its name is actually Katarijna-Käik, a small alley connecting the parallel streets of Vene and Myyrivahe. The filming location was also Pikk Street, depicting the medieval streets of the city, where much of the series' urban scenes were filmed. The view of the sea, the beach, the streets of the resort town, the Endla hotel, as well as the Rannahoone restaurant, where the sailor Voitin asks the musicians to perform the song “Pines” by Lyudgardas Gedravicius to the words of Naum Olev, were filmed in Pärnu.
