In episode #313 of Science Goes to the Movies, author and cosmologist Janna Levin joins the show to talk about mathematics in movies like “The Man Who Knew Infinity”-about the life and work of famous mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. Levin shares what it was that drove her to write her two books, “How the Universe Got its Spots and Black Hole Blues,” about Kip Thorne’s wild ambition to record the sound of two black holes colliding. She explains the spirit of generosity that compels scientific research and how a mathematical proof can transcend argument. Also included: Levin’s assessment of how black holes are depicted in the film, “Interstellar,” given the fact that no one has ever seen one.
Guest: Janna Levin
Taped: 9/22/2016
Science Goes to the Movies hosted by Lisa Beth Kovetz, looks at the science in contemporary motion pictures. Will today's sci-fi fantasies become tomorrow’s science realities? Top working scientists review popular movies, resulting in lively and informative conversations about what science is happening now, what science is heading towards us in the future, and what’s just fun fiction.

I'll watch anything with Janna Levin in it but also jumping in to say this interviewer is great!! She was clearly interested in having a conversation and not just reading a list of questions. Fun 26 minutes for sure

i really love any piece done by Faith Salie as she does a thorough job on any topic. I do have one complaint about the topic. It’s a misleading title as y’all talked about “Man who infinity” for just “two seconds” !

Einstein's "intuition/imagination/genius" is given too much credit for coming up with Special relativity and General relativity that really do not do justice to others who had worked before him. Same is the case with Ramanujan. Let's take one by one. Einstein first: Speed of light had been sufficiently accurately measured by Foucault and others by the mid 19th century. In 1860s Maxwell had derived equations of electromagnetic radiation that demanded that the speed of light be constant for them to make sense!! In 1886 Michelson Morely experiments implied that space is not a medium at absolute rest(with respect to light)!!! Earnest Mach had discussed the problem of absolute reference. These were the pressing problems of the physics by the time Einstein was studying physics at the university. At his university there was a maths professor named Minkowski who is credited with treating Space and Time on the same footing which Einstein acknowledged in his publication. Einstein himself revered Maxwell's equations as his inspiration behind his principles of invariance/equivalence!! He supposedly went even further by placing Faraday above Maxwell!!! which I interpret as : Maxwell was the quintessential university product whereas Faraday was not formally educated (who normally don't get to lead scientific endeavours) and therefore only he could come up with the concept of field!!!The rest is of course history. Now Ramanujan: Ramanujan was born to a Brahmin family in South Indi that had rich history/tradition that contributed to number theory. Being a Brahmin he had access to those mathematical literature. It's not like a Ramanujan appears in vacuum all of a sudden!!! For that matter nobody drops from heaven!!! If you search you will invariably find a rich tradition/history behind every genius!!!! Even Buddha succeeded a rich philosophical tradition that he could refute/respond to!!!!
