The crazy part is that this has happened multiple times. There were numerous occasions during the Cold War in which people thought that they were being attacked, but the bravery of one person to take the risk, go against their obligation and orders, and not press the button, ended up preventing what really would have been the first attack, and outbreak of WWIII.

Yup, and they're just the ones we know about. Stanislav Petrov did something similar when their new radar system detected multiple inbound ICBM's, he wouldn't fire because he thought it could be a glitch, and it was...It was actually a false alarm, sunlight bouncing off high altitude clouds. He lost his job for daring to go against USSR orders, even though he prevented the apocalypse.

Fun story: this guy also saved my grades. I had to get my grades up for English and we had to do some presentation about our hero. Everyone chose the cliché heroes like their parents or Mandela but I had to do something special. I just searched the date of birth of my English teacher on Wikipedia, came on this guy and when I did my presentation my teacher was curious af, kept asking questions (wasn't that prepared so I made things up) and then at the end said:"you know, I am also born that day".
