When going through my worst struggle with life and depression in 2016 I discovered this manga while it was still on-going. The depressing setting mixed in with the moments of fun and joy the girls could find in what essentially is a dead world made an impact on me. I realized that if these two cute potatoes can find joy in a bleak situation and so could I. I kept going through life with it's ups and downs. Then the final manga volume released and broke my heart. It hurt to see the end of their story but at the same time I realized that I have to set a goal for myself just as they did. Years later I'm still going and struggling with issues but I try to enjoy the small nice moments all thanks to this story rubbing off on me so much. So despite being suicidal for many years I still find the struggle of life to be worth it. Even if I am alone, even if I have no one to talk to on how I feel, but I can at least find some nice moments in my otherwise bleak life and that's the prospect that keeps me going and I have to thank Tsukumizu's works for it. Existing is painful, but the small oasis of life you find every now and then make the journey worth it.

I think girls last tour is all about what tsukumizu said " living life just for the sake of living it" I can say that girls last tour was one of the best thing that I could find, it really help me find how I really want to live my life and really made me realize how precious life is, this and yotsuba made me really start appreciating more my life when i was in the worst time of my life and watching this type of videos appreciating this manga that I really love and changed my way of living my life

I felt very uneasy myself when finished the manga. I just couldn't keep myself in place and I went to the park to think to those things out... But I don't really think it hurts. Yes, ending was... sad, to say at least, but that one phrase Yuuri said... Isn't it kinda uplifting? I feel like this manga could help a lot of people who have lost the meaning of their life... It's not about the phrase only since we've got a lot of examples why it's true. So, yes, the manga is sad, but not depressing. It's completely opposite, I think - It explains why your life doesn't have to have a meaning but happy moments. It's nice, in some way. I absolutely love GLT. Thank you for the video as I never noticed many things you've mentioned.

this video is super well done, i really love hearing other peoples opinions on this story as it's really something so unique in a world and culture full of romance, slice of lifes, isekai's everything really feels so simular, but this is just so seperate, something that couldn't be replicated by another, tsukumizu's work is so amazing, with shimeji simulation ending very soon this year i wonder what story they will come up with next or if shimeji will end up getting an anime adaptation due to it's popularity, honestly my standards for story telling have risen so much due to this, it's just to amazing.

Thank you! Your right, GLT has not left my head ever since I read it. It really is such a unique story that stands out from so many others. TKmiz has a very unique style and charm with their works. And to me it feels like they always put a piece of themselves into their works. As if Tkmiz’s stories are personal to them and their not trying to conform to any tropes of trends. Which like you said is such a breath of fresh air in an industry where everything can feel so similar.

*TREMENDOUS APPLAUSE* THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO!!!!!!! Gah I flipping love this story, and I’m so glad people are still discovering this underrated gem. I do wanna add a small thing that I think you (and others who have recently read/watched GLT) will notice as time goes by, as it’s one of my favorite aspects of the entire story. And it actually has nothing to do with the actual story at all. Like you said, this is a series that will NEVER leave you, no matter how much time passes. Months and years will go by after you finish Girls’ Last Tour, and despite revisiting it dozens of times, there will come moments where the finer details of the story begin to fade; moments where you’ll get obsessed with something else, and your undying love for GLT might get put on the back-burner. BUT. There will come times where you’ll be in a random comment section, or in a random discord server, or randomly randoming on some random corner of the internet, and you’ll see someone else with a GLT pfp, or they’ll mention the series in passing. I can’t really describe the feeling, but when you both realize you’ve experienced girls’ last tour-and I mean EXPERIENCED, not just read or watched-you’ll share a connection with that random person unlike any other connection. Both of you know what these girls went through, and in a way, you went through it with them. You might not become best friends or anything, but you don’t really need to. In that brief moment of passing, you realize the girls’ journey was never hopeless. The girls' will never know it, but we all were there beside them-laughing in their joy and sobbing in their sadness. In short, simply seeing other GLT fans when you least expect it is one of my favorite things about this series. Again, tysm for taking so much time to rant. I had this video in my watch later for weeks, and I’m glad I finally got around to checking it out ^_^ (PS: check out the manga Blame!, if you haven’t, as it HEAVILY inspired Tsukumizu’s use of apocalyptic architecture in GLT)

No, thank you for watching my very long video. It means a lot that you watched it. I haven’t had that experience yet, of finding someone who is a GLT fan where you least expect it. But after hearing how you describe the experience I can imagine why you would feel a connection to them in some way. It’s funny now that you’ve said that because I’ve had interactions with people in the community before and there’s always this unspoken connection between us. I think that must be what you said about how we all know the story of the girls and we went through it with them and we all took something away from their story. And yes I have read Blame! (It’s amazing) before I read GLT it was one of my favourite if not my personal favourite manga. Now Girls Last Tour has taken that title. The environments in that are phenomenal and you can see where TKmiz’s inspiration came from. But thank you watching my video and leaving me with new thoughts on how GLT can impact people. I now await to have that experience you described myself. GLT is the gift that kind of keeps on giving even so long after it ended.

this video is absolutely amazing !! glt has changed me forever . it is such an inspiring , yet heartbreaking piece everything about it just *clicks* : the artstyle is perfect for this kind of story , the character interactions , the world itself ,, its such a sad beauty . hopelessness , turning into serenity , and the two girls bouncing off of each other just mixes it all into a tear-jerking , thought-provoking tale that leaves you sobbing i just wish more people would be around to enjoy it ; though , i find it funny how the manga about two people exploring an empty world has barely any active fans glt is amazing ,, and everyone should check it out at least once

… Wait hold on… That makes so much sense… This story is incredibly similar to BLAME! Probs the closest thing you can find to it. And in BLAME! the Netsphere had the power to create any reality you want. A “simulation” of sorts. And if I remember correctly the Netsphere in BLAME! was depicted as an expansive field of long grass. So this whole time the final part of GLT was a BLAME! reference. That then spawned a whole new story… thanks for opening my third eye

Thanks for this long video essay. I regularly comb for any content relating to GLT, regardless if I already know what the contents are to entail. I think it's quite a different, entertaining video in contrast to the many that exist. That aside, you made me think to myself over the passed years, regarding what is functionally the Tkmiz cult. It really does consume you, in some fashion or another. I don't understand what it is that is so enchanting about their work and what makes you obsess so hard around it. I found GLT back in 2019 and I've since rewatched/reread it 9 something times. It's that I incessantly make all my close friends watch/read eventually. It has left such a big impact on my life, I personally feel, no matter how dumb it may come off as. The parables and overarching themes of the story really help those with depression, I find. Which leads me to my next point, is that I think the demographic this series appeals towards the most, is people who struggle with existentialism a lot or something denoting to it. At least in my personal experiences with others, it seems to leave a massive impact on people who deal with such. Myself included. The characters, Chito and Yuuri, fulfill archetypical roles many people do in society. The intellectual and the humble 'grug'. Both rely on one another and may see the world differently, but it's a fascinating commentary in how both architypes fill this quandary of how they'd handle the end of the world. Some people get along with it in blissful ignorance, and others struggle to let go. This existential, dreadful, confrontation of meaning/purpose to existence where you find yourself lacking any. Especially at the end of the world. What does anything mean anymore without others? I could ramble on and on and I think I'm getting a bit lost in my thoughts while writing this, but in short, I love the philosophical discussion that GLT goes over. Getting along with hopelessness. Where life is bleak, stop and appreciate the little blissful things in this life. While it may not satiate you permanently, it'll give you that nudge to the next thing. Culminated together, it'll make life all that little more enjoyable. Little visages of catharsis to be had. The breath before the hold until the next. There's so much more I could still add but I gotta catch myself here. Thanks again for the video. While you may have gotten only so many views after what's to be such a long project, it is greatly enjoyed by the few of us who accompany you here. Side note, funny seeing that The Dominator isn't here. Looks to be I beat him to something haha!

Thank you so much for this comment! NGL this might be one of the best comments I have ever received. I think everything that you brought up is incredibly interesting and offer up some good thoughts of discussion. And I appreciate hearing about your personal experience with the story. GLT and the works of TKmiz have some kind of pull that just attract people. It wasn’t until I made this video that I realised how deep the community for GLT is. It has clearly had an impact on many people myself included. And I have a feeling your right when concerning the people this story appeals to. This story would resonate with people suffering or at least just having some kind of existential thoughts. The world can look nice but is a cold and terrible place at times, yet this story shows 2 cute characters in an even colder terrible world. People can relate to and understand these characters and maybe that’s why this story has such an insane cult following. But thank you so much for watching my video. It really means a lot that you sat through all of it. Also who is this “The Dominator” and where do they fit into the lore?
@Rexxie44
@Rexxie44 Жыл бұрын
@@MadMatt-TV You're welcome! Glad to know my comment added to the discussion/provided some insightful analysis on the implications and significance of the series! Like mentioned, the series is easily my most favorite one out there, so I have way too much time to just dissect and think about the deeper themes of it.. Either case, yeah, philosophical stuff is a thing I enjoy and I find the particular philosophies in this series to really resonate with personal existential concerns. In general too, GLT poses very fascinating questions and reflections that I feel like you don't get to see regularly, or at least in this type of packaging. This grey balance of what can be surface level seen as cute, simple slice of life, but also constantly having existential dread looming over everything. In a vacuum, the former exists, but outside of that vacuum, the world is very dark and imposing. Everything about it is. The ghostly atmosphere you hear in the anime, the greyscale deathly architecture, remains from many battles, the melancholic score throughout much of the anime... But yes, tying it back to the relatability, the characters are perfect stand-ins for the audience. It makes me only ponder on the deeper implications of why people resonate with one character more than the other. Because like mentioned, they both uniquely handle the quandaries that are presented to them. Where Chito struggles with the distress of needing to document/archive everything, thinking it may matter in the grand scheme of things, Yuuri is ahead of the bell-curve in accepting the hopelessness to it all. "The world is over, why bother with that stuff anymore?" She also presents the different form of nihilism, being active nihilism. The passive nihilist would throw his hands up and refuse to do anything in the face of such a dire situation. Yuuri, on the other hand, is an active nihilist in where her mentality is that "the world may be ending tomorrow, but I'll make the most of it until then." Something that's rather resolute and humbling as opposed to spiraling in constant distress and helplessness. Yuuri may be a airhead but she understands that Chito is senselessly fretting too much over things outside of her control. Thus you have these small breakthroughs of her dropping a deep one liner throughout the series. So looping back, this relates to the reader depending upon what personality you are. In both circumstances, the great tale of getting along with hopelessness is one that I find any taking to heart. Don't let it cripple you, just keep marching on till you can't march anymore. May as well, as we have this one shot at existence that's less than a blink in the grand scheme of history. Consequently, I believe GLT will permanently remain in the niche realm of things due to the fact it may or may not mostly appeal to a specific umbrella demographic. Your average person who mindlessly consumes anime/manga, typically, isn't wanting to be watching something so serious, depressing, and introspective. Much easier to watch mindless moe or action anime. This series gives you no thriller release like that. No action, no cute; cushion-y comfort, no happy ending. Just two girls on the last tour of the skeletal bones of an already dead planet, learning what it meant to be human and what humans gone through. On this long term mission to reach the top, in hopes to find more civilization, only to be let down hardcore and die in consequence of it. The series is purely bleak, if nothing else. On the side note, the phenomena of the cult-like following towards the series and author is genuinely unlike any other that I've come to find. Sure, cult followings always existed, but I can't say I've ever seen such a sub-culture developed around what is functionally someone's abstract creative talents. Where people feel compelled to make content around the specific thing in nonsensical ways or outright develop lots of art that is either derivative or directly taken from Tsukumizu's unique style. The only other creator that comes to mind with this kind of influence, would be someone like Jhonen Vasquez, the creator of Invader Zim, with his quirky unique style and writing. I've seen many people back in the day inspired by his art style and create what is functionally fan-content. But even then, I dunno, I feel like the flourishing art scene of the Tkmiz fan community, is something quite unique of its own. Could just be perspective from it being currently ongoing and bustling but alas, this is but conjecture on my end of things.. Regarding "The Dominator", if you lurk around the community/usually anything GLT related, you tend to find him in every comment section. He's kind of renown due to such by this point, haha. He also makes music mashups typically with GLT, and some memes here and there.
@MadMatt-TV
@MadMatt-TV Жыл бұрын
My man you have a way with words I have never seen in a comment before. You flow from point to point and provide some insane insight. The contrast the art style and light heartedness the story has compared to its philosophical questions and themes are such a defining part of what makes GLT so special. Darkness meets light, happiness meets sadness and where the end meets the beginning. The two extremes that contrast one another just help bring them both out to differing effects. While thinking about it there is another anime I found only this week called Cat Soup, which is sort of the spiritual predecessor to GLT. It has a very cute art style and a kind of wholesome story on the surface. Yet it is an incredible dark tale about life and death that we see in our messed up world all the time. The whole reason the story even has a cute art style is just to exaggerate the horrific things that happen along the journey. Kind of like GLT does with its end of the world atmosphere and everything els in it. When concerning the characters I’ve never really though of Yuri in that way, being an “active nihilist”. Iv always seen her as someone who was nihilistic but just wanted to live in her own way. But with the way you describe her and worded it, it has made me look at her in a completely new light. 😊 Which is something so awesome about this story. It’s like everyone who experiences it has their own personal connection to it. As you said people who struggle with existentialism are a major demographic for this story. Which probably could explain that, existentialism is a personal thing to many people and comes from one’s self. So when presented with a story like this it would feel personal and you would have that deep connection with it. Maybe that’s why I love it so much. But that is all theory and speculation though, I’m no expert if you couldn’t tell. And thanks for the continued discussion points, love hearing them and getting new looks in things.

I just finished reading the manga. It was so worth getting it just to read those final two chapters. Even if it took a bit after the cry to understand this contentment that balmed the pain. It felt good, after all the stories I've read, all the ones I've experienced through games or shows or movies...to have a story just be over. To have no shadow, no theorized possibility that there is something more, just that a story ended right there, where it needed to. Cause yeah, it'd be nice for them to be alive, that wall spiriting them away to some paradise where they eventually meet whatever survivors of humanity remain. But then what would the point have been? For their story to not be over, for there to be more than just the two of them together, content under a starry sky.

Thank you so much!!! And yeah BLAME! Is probably the closest story you can find to this. Even though GLT is a lot more dialogue focused. They both have very similar worlds that are captivating in their own ways.

I watched the anime on Amazon & enjoyed it very much. Later, I searched for GLT dvd’s & stumbled on volumes 5 & 6 in hard copy & concluded the anime only covered vol 1-4. “Oh boy, more GLT!” Bought all 6 volumes & read them all in sequence. Surprised at how identical the anime artwork was to the books. Finished the last 2 volumes & quietly felt the devotion of these two innocent girls had to each other and their inevitable acceptance of their fate. 😢

welcome to the cult of tkmiz! hope you enjoy your stay. glt is my favorite anime/manga of all time and this was one of my favorite videos about glt or shim sim I've seen so far (and I've seen about all of them). I love how you highlighted the shimeji shitpost community like safefw and guardian of the sakana they're some of my favs. I'd like to know -- what do you think of shimeji simulation? Especially, what's your opinion on the implications in chapter 44 regarding the last part of this video?
@MadMatt-TV
@MadMatt-TV Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the welcome, I will do the cult proud. It is an honour and means a whole lot to hear that my vid is one of the best you’ve seen on the topic. With a community this passionate that is a very high award to give so thank you. With shimeji simulation I think it is absolutely amazing. I love it so much, there is something incredibly profound, beautiful and just engaging in the world and characters in that story. TKmiz just has a way of crafting stories that just draw people in. I could never really put into word, there’s just some aura that they emit that’s almost contagious. However this may come as a surprise but I haven’t actually read all of shimeji simulation. After I finished GLT I started it and got a decent way into it. (Around chapter 30 - 32 I think) But because I had other things going on at the time I sadly just stopped reading it. I’ve been meaning to come back to it and after what you have said about chapter 44 I’m gonna have to read it asap 👍🏻
@WukiPookie
@WukiPookie Жыл бұрын
Ah I see. You showed the safefw video about chapter 42 so I thought you were caught up. Well I think you’ll really like what’s coming. There’s apparently only one chapter left to come out so it’s the best time to catch up. I’m glad you love tkmiz media and I hope you keep making videos about it :)
