When I was a senior in high school (1959) my girlfriend asked me if I had ever heard of Mantovani and I had listened to him many times at my aunt's house. When I mentioned this to my aunt she gave me several 78 records of Mantovani. My girl and I would take a break from Elvis, The Platters, Chuck Berry, and such. Great music to listen to with someone you are in love with. After four years we called it quits and now my wife of 58 years and I listen to Alexa playing Mantovani for us every night. I often think about what may have been, but I came out way ahead.

This is the music I grew up with; my father was not a musician but loved his music, had speakers all over our house. I started piano at age 4, went on to play several other instruments and sing. But when I want to relax, it isn't lyrics that I want, that sometimes make me sad due to love lost. So, it is hearing these great instrumentals that I know will soothe my soul that I listen to so I can relax. Thank you for the many sites you provide, GMB! (The song playing now sends me right back to Rome and throwing dimes and maybe even a quarter in the gorgeous Trevi Fountain, so long ago!)

I understand, Ann, some of it evokes memories that are now bittersweet for me also, but I'll always love the music. Right now, "Smoke gets in your eyes" is beautiful, but my eyes often leak when I hear certain songs; guess that makes me sadistic, because I'll return to hear them again! Now, I hear "I left my heart in San Francisco" and a part of my heart is in a grave in a beautiful cemetery there, but life must go on and does for me, now, in the beautiful mountains two states away from California, but memories will come back no matter where you are!
