The threads cut into the PVC pipe would have been NPT (National Pipe Thread). The fitting on the end of the garden hose is not National Pipe Thread. Those miss matched threads only have 2-3 threads holding it together and will start leaking or break completely in a short time. You'll save time and money just doing it right the first time.

ye, BUT BUT, those threads will not have the same strength as a factory made piece. The pipe has been thinned down. Threaded PVC fittings have a thicker cross section, to aid in keeping the threads from snapping off. PVC pipe is not really very strong.

I don't think so, garden hose thread is way different than 3/4 pipe thread. Pipe thread seals on the threads and garden hose seals with the rubber washer not threads. Garden hose threads are not nearly as fine as pipe thread, the garden hose woud never thread onto a 3/4 pipe thread.

Haters gonna hate and ain'ters gonna ain't. This is a pretty neat hack and, provided you have the incorrect fitting on hand to sacrifice, could be very useful to make a necessary temporary connection until the correct fitting can be installed. I tapped into my condensate line in the garage (with the correct fitting) to run a hose out of the garage when the it backs up, which it does frequently if I forget to keep it cleaned. Heck, in my example it's a zero pressure connection and there would most likely never be a problem with the PVC threads anyway.

That's Sch 40 pvc. and has a pressure rating of around 450. So, by cutting threads, you'll be reducing the pressure rating down to around 50%. At 200 PSI, That's plenty of strength for this application.
@ericperkins3078
@ericperkins3078 Жыл бұрын
That's a nominal rating assuming all things in favor of the pipe such as age and UV exposure. That pipe is already compromised having been exposed to pipe solvent and now add the torsion of that flexible hose attached to it.

On one occasion I had to replace the hose bib on the bottom of a water heater because some clown the previous night broke off the plastic one the manufacture put on it by carelessly dropping a keg on it. After cutting out as much of the old one I threaded a 3/4 inch nipple pipe to ensure the threads were good before installing a new valve. More pertinent to this topic was after making a bathroom out of an indoor outhouse in the basement of a guys house I had to rethink how to drain the condenser coils on the furnace. The old owner just ran a plastic hose about 3 feet across the floor, through the wall and then across the floor through a hole he drilled into the metal shower stall. I ran PVC around through the back wall studs and poked it through the brand new shower stall wall finishing it off with a white plastic piece for trim normally used for a kitchen sink where the sprayer comes up from below. The pieces while still considered 3/4 inch didn't match up for threads. But they were so close I could run a nipple again back and forth until they matched. PVC , while close isn't cut as deep is all. It looked as though it was meant to be that way. The new owner used that shower daily over the bath/shower he had upstairs for some reason. Now the threads for a garden hose are not that close. A hose bib is different. I think it was a good learning experience but with adapters out there I would have gone that direction.
