Fun fact: The Krypt guy in MK11 is officially called the Descendant of Apep, and for those of you who don't know, Apep was a childhood friend of Shujinko, who you can see at the start of MK Deception Konquest mode. So the Krypt guy himself was a callback to MKD, on top of all the callbacks in MK11 Krypt. MKX Krypt was easily my favorite Krypt, NRS/WB made this 1st person mini-game so well, and I loved it.

Never forget, Netherealm reused the spider jumpscare for the Halloween event in injustice 2. It's even worse there since it appears while you're fighting.

My favorite was actually the MK Deceptions Krypt since you had to actually play Konquest mode in depth to unlock certain coffins, plus the random MK Characters that you would see running around the graves only for them to mysteriously disappear. Imagine my shock seeing a Zombie Liu Kang running around the Krypt only to find out you could actually unlock him within the game.

I remember when MK9 first released, the jump scare was like, really effective and some people really hated it. It's almost quaint to look at now, it's a still JPG with what sounds like a horse, incredibly tame compared to what came after. I think it's hilarious personally.

In the MK11 krypt, the guy who looks like Meat has a random chance to attack you when you put on Kenshi’s blindfold, and you gottta be super fast to swing the hammer after putting it on too, or he’ll straight up kill you. But you’ll get a whole skin for killing him!

LMAO it's not a crime at all. Invasions is AMAZING, and unlike MK11 Krypt you can actually unlock everything with no diminishing returns, just like in all previous Krypts before MK11

@ I just don’t feel doing the same repetitive battles against AI over and over again that fun. We’re relegated to what is essentially a boardwalk while MK11 Krypt’s allowed us to truly explore and while unlocking things. Felt like a completely different game

@@mayfield0707961 LOL the matches are not repetitive, you got different opponents/ different modifiers and mini-games all the time. By that logic all battles in fighting games are repetitive. All types of gameplay are great, but the Krypt is supposed to be unlocking everything in the game, and while MK11 Krypt was awesome, it couldn't be as good as it could've been because of the diminishing returns, and no type of gameplay is gonna change that. MKX Krypt has both the exploration and unlocking with no diminishing returns, so you got the "game in a game" feel without the unlocking being taken away, and Invasions combines the Krypt with a bunch of other single player modes from MK games, that's why they are incredible. Not to mention that once you do unlock everything in MK11 Krypt (everything you can, that is), all you can unlock are just konsumables for the TOT's.

@@mayfield0707961 There is nothing repetitive in Invasions AT ALL. You get different matches against different opponents, different mini-games and unique challenging bosses. By that logic all fights in fighting games are repetitive. Are you gonna say that Ranked is repetitive? Of course not. Also Invasions, just like all the Krypts before MK11, actually allow you to unlock everything, while MK11 Krypt doesn't allow you to unlock everything due to diminishing returns. And regarding the free-roaming, that's just movement, all kinds of movement are good, and MK1 Invasions is incredible.

Im 37 years old. I started with the original in the Arcade and on Genesis. One of the best video game franchises. Love your guys videos and thank you

I remember the MKX Krypt being such a cool idea that I just couldn't play because I hated the jump scares so much. It remained untouched after one attempt to play it. I've loved exploring the Krypt since Deadly Alliance, so it's a shame I couldn't appreciate all the work that must have gone into that version.

I was playing MKX in college and had my Xbox hooked up in the common room. My friend is super arachnophobic so when that spider jumpscare came up he screeched at the highest decibel he could muster and sprinted full speed down the hall. I did not see him again for the rest of the night.

Here’s a story: when I was 10 me and my cousin would play mk9 at his house on his ps3. I remember we were in the krypt and my cousin had fallen asleep. My eyes were getting heavy and I had been in the krypt for what felt like ages. I was mindlessly walking backwards looking for something to buy when the jumpscare hit me. I immediately turned off the console without saving anything. I was on edge for the next 20 minutes and jumped at everything. I tried to tell my cousin the next morning and he didn’t believe me. Fast forward to when he got mkx him and a friend were playing the krypt but I wouldn’t watch bc I told them I didn’t wanna get jumpscared. My cousin kept saying there weren’t any but eventually the dog got them and they both jumped back and screamed 😂. To this day they mk9 flesh pits monsters scares me and I won’t play the krypt even now 18:03 I hate you all

I did love the MK11 Krypt, but the thing that made it a less fun experience was the randomisation of unlocks. Meant there was no way to target unlocking stuff for a favourite character, and eventually opening nearly everything and having to reset it with those Kronika themed buttons just made it feel like undoing progress.

It's worth mentioning that the Krypts in DA and Deception had random kombatants run around the tombstones and hide behind them, it's rather goofy but it may be a precursor of the jump scares in later games. But I swear the Krypt jump scares are scarier than in many modern horror games.

Even though Konquest was a glorified tutorial I really liked how detailed it was going through every character. Stances, moves, combos and the last mission was a mirror match that tested how well you could use the character. It was legitimately challenging for a novice who was just a button masher

Maybe its a good thing you didnt get much farther in the MK11 Krypt, because the MK11 Krypt later on has you trekking through a spider colony. The spiders breathe fire and to get a skin you have to kill one of them, but they will always respawn, either behind you or coming out of a tunnel just out of view.

The Deadly Alliance Krypt is still phenomenal. Sure, NRS have significantly upped the production values for its MK9, X and 11 iterations (rip mk1, you were forced out the door incomplete), but MKDA version specifically feels like a love letter to the franchise as a whole, plus iirc it released during the 10th anniversary of MK. I hope we'll see it again in MK2 in however many years assuming next nrs game isn't injustice 3

I SWEAR I remembered on MK Deceptions Krypt that there was also a jumpscare, but my friends are all saying I’m misremembering and I can’t find any footage of it. There would be a ghoul or zombie like creature that would wander around the Krypt while you purchase things and every now and then he would jumpscare you. I just need confirmation that I’m either misremembering or insane.

The MK11 one was SO COOL letting you explore Shang Tsung's Island, but the progression is kind of odd; you think it's going to keep going and then it sort of just stops? I also did NOT appreciate the enemy spider-like jumpscares in that mode either.

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance and Deception had the BEST Krypts imo. Obtaining Koins by playing the game alone, and everything was already included in the basegame itself! No DLC's for costumes, new characters or even paying real money for digital content! Every subsequent MK game brought good and bad things to the Krypt system. Armageddon with the single Koin was an improvement. MK 9 had an unique layout with sections, but the jumpscare was annoying. The Krypt from MK X is visually stunning, but I dislike the FPS adventure + jumpscares. MK 11 was the best new version of the Krypt, but the fact that you could die everytime was a bit of a bummer. It's sad that MK 1 decided to ditch the Krypt for some random crappy Shrine, and each time you have to pay 1000 Koins for random rewards! I miss the days where you had all the Krypt Koffins written down on a piece of paper and just played the game to save Koins to unlock your favorite character or alternate costume.

I hate jumpscares. I would've been happy to explore the Krypts to their fullest, enjoying the ambience for hours, if not for the chance of something screaming in my face. Franky, the fact that the only jumpscare in Invasions is a random encounter with a cracked screen makes me prefer it to the krypt.

It's not really a jumpscare though, Invasions also takes inspiration from Pokemon with elements such as the character types, that Ambush fights in Invasions are basically wild Pokemon encounters in old school Pokemon games, and we all know that these are not jumpscares.
