Quick note! Though, I try to include as many depictions as possible, not everything makes the cut for one reason or another. I will likely start to include a sort of ‘honorable mentions’ section. That way, even more depictions can be included, and I bypass some reasons I have to cut out certain interpretations.

One that honestly i don't even know you knew about is Skyrim's smilodons And i say that in plural because there's a normal version and a snow version I think they're called sabre-cats in the game but they pretty much are identical to smilodons Edit: Oh yeah, there's also the Vale sabre-cat from The dawnguard DLC

I have one just in case: In the Lilo and Stitch series, an experiment has the ability to turn modern animals into prehistoric ones. It turns an elephant into a mammoth, a squirrel into a saber-tooth squirrel, and a tiger into a Smilodon. It also turns some other animal into a T-Rex (never revealed what they used).

I must say, in regards to the plain/stripes/spots issue, I think I heard somewhere that due to their primarily grassland environment, spots or plain seems to be considered be more likely/advantageous for Smilodon, since stripes are more beneficial in forests to help break up your silhouette under a canopy this missed interpretation is probably more obscure (and might not technically count), so I'm not surprised it didn't show up here, but in the american anime series RWBY (pronounced ruby), there are creatures called Grimm, basically monsters that are mostly based on fairy-tale or mythical creatures, but introduced in volume 7 were Grimm based on prehistoric creatures, one of them was called Sabyr (pronounced sabre), clearly inspired by Smilodon (but not Smilodon itself), as well as Megoliath (Woolly Mammoth), Centinal (Arthropleura), and Teryx (a kind of large Dromaeosaur with Pterosaur wings) p.s. you say Smilodon was ruined for you by Journey to 10'000 BC and Primeval, for me (in a different way) it was the documentary Prehistoric Predators, that first showed me that Terror Birds (one of my favourite non-Mesozoic groups of animals) weren't just punching bags for Smilodon like the hyenas (one of my favourite modern animals) in the Lion King, that they could actually fight back and probably come out on top in most encounters (when they coexisted that is), so when that specific scene happened in the first episode in Life on our Planet, as well as the implication that they were superior and had a large part in the Terror Bird extinction, that kind of tainted my first impression of the show, and my expectations of it going forward

For such an iconic prehistoric creature, I’m surprised Smilodon isn’t featured more often. My personal favorite depiction of the sabertooth is the iconic Walking With Beasts design. While aspects of their lifestyle might not line up with what we now know about them, I still think it’s hands down the best Smilodon yet put to screen.

In ZT2: Extinct Animals, the Smilodon has a brown-spotted coat with a white underbelly similar to Prehistoric Kingdom's version, but - If you're lucky enough - you'll get a Leucistic or Melanistic version, when adopting Smilodon. In ZT1: Complete Collection, it has a brown coat and white underbelly. Overall, both designs of the animal in these games are pretty good. 😁

Very detailed compilation of Smilodon. It is such a popular creature that it's hard to include every single interpretation, but there are a couple not mentioned that can be considered honorable mentions. If you haven't seen them, you should. Smilodon was in Animal Planet's Giant Monsters with Jeff Corwin. Its animation model was identical to its cousin Megantereon from Before We Ruled the Earth; the only difference was the Smilodon had cougar-style fur while Megantereon had spots and stripes. Both looked really nice, though. There was also a pink Smilodon in an episode of the TV series Pink Panther and Sons. As a side note, it's worth mentioning that Diego's muscular pack member named Lenny is, according to tie-in material, really a scimitar cat (Homotherium). If we ever see a compilation of that particular cat, Lenny could make the list!

One thing almost all depictions of Smilodon ignore is that Smilodon wasn’t actually well-adapted for genuine ice age conditions in the way mammoths and woolly rhinos were: S. fatalis was outright poorly adapted for cold, dry, open climates and habitats and was a forest and woodland specialist that was at its best during the warmer interglacials, and even the more generalized S. gracilis and S. populator weren’t dependent on grassland ecosystems and could also thrive in swamps, jungles, woodlands, etc. It’s ironic that the most iconic “ice age” animal of all was an animal more associated with interglacial habitats, especially given when it went extinct. Oh, and most docs conflate all 3 Smilodon species as being samey when they’re not (aside from the habitat differences, S. gracilis wasn’t a dominant predator due to there being two much larger predators around for the first part of its existence; and S. populator was a bit more cursorial than S. fatalis, though not to pursuit predator levels).

I imagine it would have been fine in forests, especially redwood and conifer, plenty of cover for it to hunt and shelter in.

Great Video! Saw your highlighted comment & I'd like to share some interpretations of Smilodon that didn't make the cut but that I'm at least aware of: -Mark D. Wolf's Age of Mammals (A stop motion animated documentary that focuses on the Cenzoic Era & some of it's creatures; mostly mammals. Smilodon is depicted here, first attempting to hunt a Glyptodon but failing, then successfully managing to kill a Megatherium) -Wild New World/Prehistoric America (A BBC documentary that focuses on North American fauna during the Ice Age. I haven't seen the full documentary series but I've seen clips of it. It's made by the same animation company that made Monsters We Met/Land of Lost Monsters; so it re-using many of the same models, including Smilodon) -Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (A Smilodon Skeleton was seen coming to life in the film) -Disney's Lilo & Stitch: The Series (Season 2 Episode 11: Retro/In the episode, one of Stitch's cousins turns a Zoo's Tiger into a Smilodon) -Giant Monsters with Jeff Corwin (A special that aired on Animal Planet & was hosted by Jeff Corwin. In one segment, Jeff encounters a Smilodon, which chases him up a tree. Later, a group of them fight a Megatherium over a carcass. The model for the Smilodon was re-used for a Megantereon in another documentary; Before We Ruled) -Prehistoric Predators (A documentary series from National Geographic. One episode focused on the North American: Smilodon fatalis. Smilodon gracilis made a minor appearance in another episode that focused on Terror Birds) -Zoo Tycoon Franchise (Smilodon was one of the various adoptable creatures in both Zoo Tycoon: Dinosaur Digs & Zoo Tycoon 2: Extinct Animals) -Animal Crossing Franchise (Introduced in Animal Crossing: Wild World & continuing to their most recent game; The skeleton of Smilodon can be dug up & donated to the Museum) -The Velvet Claw (An animated documentary that focuses on predators; Smilodon makes a few appearances in it) -Natural History Museum Alive with David Attenborough (A special hosted by David Attenborough in which he discusses many of the specimens at the London Museum of Natural History. Smilodon makes an appearance in the special but unlike many of the other animals features, it only comes to life as a skeleton) -Dinotopia Franchise (Smilodon has only made a few brief appearances throughout some of the books. It appeared as statues in Land Apart from Time but made a physical appearance in Journey to Chandara. Smilodon made a larger appearance in a side series book; Sabertooth Mountain) -Calvin & Hobbes (In one strip; Calvin's family go to a Natural History Museum and briefly see a model of a Smilodon) -Star Wars Tales of the Jedi (The first episode of the series featured a creature known as a Raxshir. It's appearance is heavily based on that of Smilodon & other saber-toothed cats) -Time Warp Trio (S2E9: Caveman Catastrophe/A Smilodon appears briefly in this episode.)

Great Video on Smilodon, i also been calling it a Sabre Tooth Tiger ever since i found out of the Animal in Ice Age when i was 10 years old at the time. I loved that film to Death ^_^ Another one interpretations was in an Anime called, Dinozaurs. it was more of a Transformer-Dinosaur Anime of a group of Resurrected Prehistoric Animals (Dinosaurs/Pterosaurs/Cenozoic/Marine Reptiles) become Dino Knights and their planet from evil Dragozaurs. it was a Dinosaur like Anime i watched as a kid long before Dinosaur King, which i also love too.

I feel like Zoids would be a good addition to these. Zoids have been around for forty years now, so you’ve got Zaberfang as the older design, and Fang Tiger from Zoids Wild as a new one. Zoids would be good for velociraptor and T. rex because velociraptor has Gun Sniper, Rev Raptor, Gilraptor, but T. rex in zoids has Garius from the very first line and Death Saurer, both “kangaroo” style, then geno saurer/breaker, bio tyranno, and death Rex for updated stances. But maybe I’m the only one who hopes for zoids to be included in anything.

Also, is it just me or have cats as a group remained surprisingly unchanged for their entire 30 million year existence (far more so than sharks, crocodylomorphs, etc)? Literally the first cat ever was an ambush-hunting grappling hypercarnivore and almost every other cat since (save Homotherium) has stuck to that bauplan with a few variations (“ambush predator but bigger”, “ambush predator but bigger, with sabreteeth and more flexible neck”, “ambush predator but really fast in short bursts”, etc).

God I recall seeing those horror movie Sabertooths when I was younger. Curiously they spelt those movies Sabretooth and Attack of the Sabretooth instead of Sabertooth and Attack of the Sabertooth. Maybe they were avoiding copyright? I dunno. As for whether these movies are related I don't know. I see stuff claiming they're connected and seen stuff claiming they're not. They're b movies made in the early 2000s so info on them is lost to time. Amusingly for Attack of the Sabretooth there was 3 Saber Tooth Tigers. A slightly smaller female, a slightly larger male and a one ton freak that could only move by dragging itself on its front two legs. Neat they acknowledged that a Sabre of that size would have trouble moving. I really want a new horror movie focused around a Saber Tooth Tiger. They're a perfect horror movie choice. Just imagine being in the dark and all you hear is the low growl before a flash of those pearly white teeth.

There was also one in a Episode of Dan vs (At least I think it was a Smilodon. Looked at least a lot like one). I think it was in that Episode where his Cat was stolen because it belongs to a rare Breed

Never seen you mention the 2006 strategy game ParaWorld (no surprise as it is kind of forgotten in these modern times). Maybe take a look for a future episode? There are a lot of nice colour/pattern designs in my humble opinion.

How would you feel about doing a terror bird video? All this talk about saber teeth and their relation to terror birds like Phorusrhacos is making me want a video starring it.

Even though it's basically the same design as the Monsters We Met model, Smilodon also appeared in Wild New World/Prehistoric America. Also just like with Alpha, the "Sabertooths" from Quest For Fire are actually Cave lions with saber teeth (because a regular ol' lion [or cave lion] isn't terrifying enough apparently 🙄)

Quest for Fire is a genius film, it was actually filmed before multiple humaties was a proven fact and film "predicted" a lot of cool things - sapiens wearing ochre, mating between species, some more advanced than others, kinda predicted denisovans, landscape where they all could cross rach other etc A lot of inaccuracies, but still, for 1981 film really cool)

I remember Zoo Tycoon having a smilodon. I remember Zoo Tycoon 2 NOT having one, but it's been some time.

The Pleistocene Era is far too underrated. Definetly needs more representation.

I would like to mention the Snow Stalker from The Future is World. It's not a cat, but rather a giant wolverine that evolved to fill in the sabre-toothed cat niche.
