I'm a pharmacy tech and it's been crazy between this and trulicity. The frustration and concern between the patients and us was exhausting. Funny how they pulled wegovy for months on a backorder, and all of a sudden had enough to stock as of Jan 1st. Just in time for new years resolutions

Pharmacy assistant here, we've barely had any stock at all! We might get a trulicity every now and then but it's far from enough. Even though I work at a small pharmacy, we have a relatively long list of patients that use ozempic or trulicity, and I feel so bad for them needing to go to a less effective medicine. I really hope it's sorted sometime this year.

I’m pre-diabetic with a BMI of 32+ (it was 37+ 3 months ago) and I take Ozempic. But I also workout, see a nutritionist, a health and wellness coach, and check in with my doctor and pharmacist monthly. This isn’t a miracle drug, it’s a tool. The biggest thing for me is that it has silenced the constant food noise. I no longer think about food all day every day. It’s so nice to now eat for nutrition and fuel, making better eating choices because I’m not constantly thinking I’m starving, only eating until I’m satisfied and not finishing everything on my plate because “it’s just too delicious to stop eating.” I don’t agree with people taking it as a quick fix to fit into that dress or drop 10-15 lbs. but I do agree with it being used as a preventative measure for those who are very obese. Diabetes runs in my family, my great grandmother went blind from diabetes the last 6 mos of her life. I need to take action now to be healthy so I can live longer and not get diabetes.

I've noticed losing weight is easier when upping my protein intake and minimizing fat. 4 calories per gram of carbs and protein, however, it's 9 calories per grams of fat. Fat also tastes much better in general. Avoid added sugar like it'll murder you. There's also the filling food that you can eat like fruit. You can eat 3000 calories of peanuts easily but try eating 1000 calories of any fruit. Potatoes are life saver for me. Some air fried french fries will fill me up quick and they're not that calorie dense. Coaches and nutritionists are experts but ultimately it is your body and you care more about it than they do by a long shot. Learn proper dieting yourself so you don't have to rely on someone else. We have the internet and the information is there. Avoid the psuedo science bs like that V Shred idiot. Watch people like Biolayne or Jeff Nippard. They focus on body building but it's still super useful for everyone. Good luck because it is truly a struggle against yourself. A drug to do what you can accomplish yourself is never good as it is only treating a symptom. Hunger is not a feeling that always has to be satisfied either.

I want to chime in on my perspective. I was diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome - a hormonal imbalance) 8 years ago, and I've been struggling with my weight for 10 years (constantly going up or remaining stagnant despite my lifestyle changes). At my heaviest last year, my BMI was >50. This medicine has been a gamechanger for me. I take the wegovy version, and once I started it, the weight finally started coming off. It has been so gratifying to have efforts actually go somewhere. The exercise and nutrition I have been working on for years are finally starting to work. My body is working with me instead of against me. I really wish the people who need it (those who are diabetic or obese that don't respond to "normal" interventions) are able to get it.

Yes! I have PCOS as well. After trying different medications and blood work (recommended by my doctor) led to learning that my PCOS has caused me to have insulin resistance. I agree 100% the stigma that the only people worthy of this medication are the diabetics is FALSE. I have joint hyper mobility syndrome and I had also been trying a lot of different diets and physical therapy for a long time with no effect. I can't lose weight if I can't move due to dislocations. I kept gaining weight and have been becoming more and more disabled. My doctor figured that if I can get some of the weight off while working in physical therapy to build up the muscles around my joints I would have fewer dislocations long term. It's a good assistive medication. And I've noticed a significant reduction in dislocations and I have much greater mobility.

You won't want to eat much. And eating fast will make you vomit. Coupled with life style changes it can be a helpful tool. The VA system is slow, I am using it to lose weight bc I can't fit in my prosthetic leg and 30 extra lbs isn't good for my few Remaining joints. If it hurts to be up and active I can't lose. But the VA needs to figure out why I constantly feel hungry and bloated and why despite no significant changes I gained 30 lbs in a year or more. But they don't consider me to be overweight. Well how is that measured? Bc I'm missing 20% of my body

While not being able to get it, I upped my Galvumet from 500mg twice a day to 500mg three times a day and seemed to kept my A1c at a stable level. I am one of those diabetics on a wait list a mile long. After being diagnosed with diabetes I struggled to find a medication that worked for me and for my body. Ozempic was the only medication that gave me a good balance and didn't leave me feeling horrendous. Thanks to shortages, I've not had access to Ozempic since October. My medications have been a juggling act just to keep me OK - my BSL readings are not where they should be and the side effects from medications make leaving home hard some days. D: ok, when you eat snacks do you eat the less sugar candy or the less salted potato chips? Me: i don't eat those D: um..... then what do you eat? me: for snacks usually fruit, I do drink a lot of milk, vegetables, we don't eat out much so it's usually rice meat and vegetables all prepared at home. D: it's the Fruit and milk, you're eating to much of that you need to slow down on that. do you drink apple or orange juice? Me : I don't drink juice. this was NOT a good conversation. With her assumption that I eat "crappy food". this is how i've been treated by doctors, diatitians, etc. It was always about how I should take better care of myself. I have PCOS, PMDD and I walk with a crutch because I have an injury from when I was in the army. But according to all these professionals, I was just too lasy to put in the effort to lose weight. Until I went to see an andocrinologist who did take a look at my entire health situation and she did put me on ozempic and although the side effects where horrible at first, it has changed my life. I don,t advocate for people to go straight to medication to lose weight, but I think there is a LOT of education that needs to happen in the medical community about how to treat people with weight issues. So saying someone shouldn't get it prescribed cause they didn't wait for their bloodsuggar to first become bad enough to become a diabetic (which is not reversable contrary to some peoples beliefs) is just unethical imo. There are other medicatons that help diabetic patients to manage their bloodsuggar other than insulin and they can still just like other obese patients learn about nutrition and add some sport. Truth of the mather is that most diabetic 2 patients are extremely obese to the point that they would not have to starve to lose fat and therefore become healthier. Most scripts I receive are electronic so I can see the diagnosis but if it was missing, I'd tell the patient I'd have to call the doctor for a diagnosis to see if it's covered. This person was telling me that she was using ozempic just for weight loss and the side effects took a huge toll on her, so we had to take her to the hospital. Sad to see that a platform like TikTok is promoting misinformed medical advice that’s causing a medical shortage to the patients that ACTUALLY needs it for their conditions. It’s also hurts to see people willing to go through extreme lengths when weight loss is something that’s in our control. We can all agree that we want to be in shape, but taking just weight loss meds is not the solution.

I can eat a normal meal and feel full, whereas I used to have to eat at least double portions of anything to feel full. I think prescribing a medication not designed for weight loss off label and causing a shortage isn't quite right. @PureChaos

I think the biggest issue is that doctors are starting people out on big doses of the semaglutides, so it throws the whole system way out of whack. Instead of starting someone on 0.5mg a week for 1 to 3 months, they just give them 1mg to 2mg doses per week. That can cause all sorts of gastrointestinal issues like your patient was experiencing. Doctors that prescribe this to people need to make the patient understand that this drug is not a quick weight loss thing where you take it for a couple weeks or a month to lose 10 to 15 pounds for an event, but it is a long term medication that needs to gradually increase as your body adapts to its effects. I take Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes and it really is a game changer, but my doctor started me on the lowest dose and when I went to a higher dose, I had issues, so he reduced it back down. If he had just started me out on 5mg or 10mg, I would most likely have had severe issues like your patient did, if not worse like diabetic hypoglycemic coma.

I was unable to take metformin and put on the other med instead. Neither of these drugs are particularly good at treating PCOS and as a result, by 2011 I became an insulin dependent, T2 diabetic with fairly advanced metabolic syndrome. And while I've been a well controlled diabetic since my diagnosis, I wish these drugs would have been available for me. I'm now on an older version of semaglutide and my A1C has never been this low: 5.9! I'm also no longer on insulin. So I feel for you. It scared me so much when I started my treatment with Ozempic. I had and still do some days have bad side effects, my doctor really took care of me starting with small dose and increasing as should. But I was so sick week one I ended up in Hospital with gastritis and for 5 weeks after that I vomited almost every time I ate, and I ate very little. I do not know what it feels like having bulimia, and I am so sorry for those that suffer from the disease, but the vomiting after every meal had me so worried. Thank you for making this video! I suffered a traumatic brain injury 13 years ago that caused me to more than doubled my body weight in 4 months (roughly gaining a pound a day.) Nothing I did (diet or exercise) would help me lose the weight or stop it from coming on. I finally quit gaining weight, but at 24 years old I weighed 252 lbs and was facing diabetes as a real possibility. I was put on Mounjaro and it changed everything. The shots made me extremely sick for the first 3 weeks, but after 6 months I’ve managed to dramatically lower my A1C, improve my fatty liver, lose 50 lbs so far (between the medication, Vyvanse for my ADHD, eating healthy, and working out 5 days a week) and I am no longer considered pre-diabetic. It changed and saved my life, but it’s becoming more and more difficult to fill my script because of shortages. Please, don’t run to your doctor to prescribe this if you don’t NEED this medication. Sometimes I have to skip a week or more because the medication is unavailable because it can “magically” help people lose a few pounds.

This is the kind of content I subscribed for. A doctor that treats medicine like the science it is instead of encouraging the public be allowed to remain uneducated about matters of medicine, and teaches us to treat medicine the same. It's all a case by case basis, based on what the patient wants vs what is actually healthy for the patient. And in cases of misusing medicine, the vast majority of the time it ends up having undesired if not completely unforseen consequences. Your life is important. I see lots of pharmacists & pharmacy techs like myself in the comments who are glad you're speaking about this! We went months without getting ANY in stock, couldn't order it, & had diabetic patients who were having to return to using drugs that just were not effective for them out of sheer necessity. That along with other shortages, like antibiotics & ADHD meds, were terrifying for the patients who really need them. & we had to start being selective about who was getting the meds to make sure the patients who really needed them got them first. The difference tho, is that this shortage was caused by people who didn't actually need the meds taking them. I liked the comment from someone who pointed out they magically became more available after the new year in time for New Year's resolutions! I hadn't thought about that.

@@alisalavine1052 I agree. Austengirl is an example of someone whose risk/benefit ratio says they should take this medication off label as it clearly would help them steer away from a worse medical outcome. I think this is like the 80s stimulant based weight loss drugs. Stimulants are beneficial in low doses for ADHD and narcolepsy, but pounding stimulants to shave off those last few pounds is just asking for a heart attack or stroke. Quick fix weight loss should be called what it is: abuse of a drug. It sounds harsh, but just think about it. The people who ABUSE diuretics to the point they're bowels stop functioning properly are doing it as a quick fix to their weight loss. Granted, the abuse of a drug doesn't mean they don't have a health issue that needs treatment. EDs are very serious and deserve treatment with empathy, but it's still drug abuse. Unfortunately, the for profit pharmaceutical companies are going to jump through every hoop possible to continue to supply and profit off of these people who seek to abuse their product because hey, it's money.

You'd never ever see blood pressure medications or other medication be promoted in the same way! I 1000% agree with you - weight loss medication should NEVER be a first line of defense. I completely agree with blood pressure medications not being promoted the same way as weight loss ones. On the contrary, I've seen several German videos highlighting that it is better to not need blood pressure meds because of the side effects and how to lower blood pressure naturally. It actually goes up to a point where you often can't even watch a video about hypertension in general without someone stressing multiple times that you should fix it with weight loss, healthy diet, no smoking, .... I have secondary hypertension (=hypertension due to another chronic disease, chronic kidney disease in my case), I can't fix it only with a healthy life style. The hype about Ozempic is so big that even I heard about it, and it would actually be pretty nice if I gained a few pounds, since I'm on the lower side of the healthy weight range. As Dr. Mike said, it is a great tool for people who are obese and / or have diabetes (with proper counsel and weighing they risks against the benefits of course), but absolutely not for people who maybe only are a few pounds over the desired weight or just want to fit into a smaller dress size. Just buy it one or two sizes bigger and feel great in it, that makes you much more beautiful than a few pounds more or less. And I highly doubt anybody's going to check the size.

I had this same experience, except I did accept the Ozempic prescription because I was about 90 pounds overweight, diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and PCOS. Losing weight was VERY difficult before starting the medication. I would do everything right and would lose maybe a pound a month if I was lucky. I couldn’t take it anymore, but I didn’t want surgery. After consulting with my PCP, she prescribed me Ozempic (started with the 0.5), phentermine 37.5mg, and metformin 500mg. We sat down, came up with a progressive weight loss plan, and she referred me to a nutritionist who created a meal plan for me. I also started kickboxing and I LOVE it. Since starting this journey in September of 2022, I’ve lost 52 pounds. Everything hasn’t been perfect, but it’s obviously working! The only thing I notice is I’m not losing fat at a rate that I would like. So now I’m incorporating less of kickboxing and more of weightlifting/resistance training. I’ve said all of this to say, all of us have to choose the right path for ourselves. Try it your way first, and if you’re seeing results KEEP GOING. But if you get to a point that you don’t see results and it becomes frustrating or depressing to the point you want to give up, go back to your doctor and please accept their help. Doesn’t have to be forever, but just long enough to give yourself that initial boost.

Suddenly my prescription could not be filled and I had to go through the horrific with-drawls because I could not get my medication for months. One thing they don't tell you about this medication is you cannot suddenly stop taking it. I was on one of the higher doses and tolerating it well, until I had to stop. I don't even know all the damage at this point but I was sick for over a month. I finally got my prescription refilled recently, and starting it up again came with more sickness because these medications are no joke with the side effects. I also appreciate this video for the same exact reason. A year ago I was Diagnosed as a Type 2 Diabetic and I was taking Trulicity for the whole year. I went back and forth between the 1.5 and the and the 3 throughout the whole year and then all of a sudden this stupid craze started. I couldn’t believe I was struggling to get my medicine. I went from being able to get free samples from my diabetic specialist to my specialist being almost in tears when she’d tell me she couldn’t give me any more of the free samples because of the shortage because of this. I was fine taking the 3 for a while and then when it was out because of the shortages I was forced to go back to the 1.5. It made me so sick. When I When I was 17 and 19 I had pediatric acute pancreatitis and I almost died and the doctors told me that I had a 50/50 chance of developing diabetes later in life. The pain I felt when I got sick from not having my medication reminded me of the pain I felt when I had Acute pancreatitis. I will never forget that pain and I’m going to be 28 in September. I desperately need this medication to live. It just makes me sick to my stomach knowing that there are people out there who are so desperate and greedy to take who have/ or who are taking the medication that we need to survive for their own selfish weight loss reasons. Not only that but because of this stupid craze/shortage I already could barely afford my medicine to begin with and before this all happened I didn’t even know about the trulicity cares program or I would’ve tried to sign up before they stopped taking applications. Now I really am having difficulties paying for my medication because of the shortages the prices went up and because of the shortages there’s no openings for programs for anyone like us who truly need our medication to get financial support for our life saving medication and it’s absolutely terrible.

I didn't think that ADHD was related until you said this and now I feel like a dunce. I've taken to keeping stuff that I nibble after the hunger pains strike, which I call "emergency calories". It's usually something like pepperoni slices or rice cakes, whatever I can quickly eat while I make something I'd find more palatable which ends up being dinner for the fam. Even then, I eat last because I have to rework my appetite just to eat a full meal. After that, seal is broken and I'm eating a spaghetti-sauce pizza bagel with stuffed mushrooms and a whole roasted garlic bulb.

I've been able to lose 120 lbs, most of which was while using Semaglutide. When this was prescribed to me I was also prescribed a medically supervised, low calorie/low carb diet as well I began seeing a dietician. Additionally I started exercising 3-5 times per week for at least 30 minutes per session. Was it easy to lose 120 lbs? Absolutely not and it's not easy now either! Semaglutide is NOT a quick fix, nothing is! I'm no longer taking it and I hope to never need it again, however it really helped me turn my life around and allowed me to take my many health concerns under control. I'm fully aware that there are shortages in the US however I do not apologize for taking Semaglutide when I did as it likely helped me stay away from becoming diabetic in the long run.

You are absolutely in the population that this medication is appropriate for. It's the people trying to lose ten, twenty or thirty pounds that are not diabetic that need to refrain from using medication that diabetics need to live. Someone morbidly obese clearly needs to lose the weight to save their lives as well. Good for you. Congratulations on your great progress.

The glamorization of this drug impacts people who really need it. I've been stuck on the 1mg dose for nearly 8 months because the 2mg is always out of stock. It frustrates me to no end to see people who need to drop less than 50lbs being placed on this drug. This is so medically irresponsible. Whoever is prescribing this for those patients is part of the problem.

I was prescribed this to me from my Urologist. This was for reducing my A1C score as I was boardline pre diabetic. I'm definitely taking it as prescribed. My A1C has dropped and I'm out of pre diabetic range. My doctor asked me to increase the dosage but I declined as I need to get back into exercising and not be so reliant or even addicted to it. So I thank you Dr. MIKE for this video! I'm glad that my doctor is doing what's best and that I feel like I am holding myself accountable and making the right choices.

Unfortunately media representation doesn't help with that. So many chubby characters with a candy bar in their hand in every scene, it's absolutely unrealistic and demeaning. Even when eating 1200 calories a day and getting 10k-14k steps day I was still 220 lbs. People just don't understand there's more to weight than over eating and lack of exercise.

from my somewhat limited knowledge, I think I’ve gotten to know from somewhere that certain individuals may tend to lose fat slower and above a certain threshold within a short figure of time maintaining a large calorie deficit, they lose muscle instead, right? Or in simpler terms, one can only lose so much fat within a time period before the body starts to employ certain countermeasures to combat this rapid fat loss Docorrect me if any mistakes have been made

I have several obese friends who have tried everything, one's still over 500 lbs and has been in bariatric rehab eating hospital food for several years now, two more have had bariatric surgery and are still over 400 lbs despite diets no worse than mine and regular exercise (one was walking 10 km a day, the other bikes and does martial arts) another who eats healthy, walks daily and skis all winter but is now prediabetic and on metformin, and one more is on Ozempic because she's diabetic but also has PCOS and Hashimoto's, she has been heavy since she was a child (the thyroid disorder wasn't diagnosed until way later ate healthy to begin with, now she eats half as much, I don't think she's losing weight yet, "If I can't lose weight while taking this, it's not something that _I_ am doing wrong." And every single one of them has gone to a doctor for something unrelated to their weight and been told the problem would resolve if they lost weight.

@@bunhelsingslegacy3549 no one can break the laws of thermodynamics. They are secret eaters. Obese people usually don't even notice the extra calories they are consuming and hence say "but I don't even eat that much". No one, and I repeat, no one who is over 300 pounds, heck even 200 pounds (if a woman) is eating healthily. Just travel to other countries (not Canada or UK) and you'll see how regular humans look and how much of a sore spot is someone who is 300+. The American diet and the non existing regulations is making your country fat. And is contributing making everyone fat around the world.

You're secretly eating. Watch the show secret eaters. Start counting your calories for real. if you're seriously eating 1500-1800, over 5'3" and not losing, contact your local university. You should be studied as the first human who broke thermodynamic laws.

Thanks for making this video. I work in primary care and it's very frustrating for our diabetic patients who NEED Ozempic to treat their diabetes and comorbid conditions, who now can't get it. Some people can't even get their Trulicity anymore; we had a lady who was stable for a long time, but ended up having to lower her Trulicity dose because it was on backorder. Her A1c shot up from 6.1% to 8.4% :(

My mom is an RD and she mentioned the name of this drug is very similar to one they use to slow motility in patients with gut resections so they have a chance to actually absorb stuff even though their guts are shorter. And she was wondering if this was similar, so I pulled up your video to see and sure enough its the same drug class and the symptoms she predicted it would have for healthy people are exactly what you brought up! This is also the first vid she watched of yours, and she loves your outlook on weight management for quality of life improvement. As someone who has fought this battle with my own weight struggles, I love it too.

As someone who struggles with mental health challenges everyday, I went to my doctor I was gaining weight and was depressed about my body. I tried dieting and working out but whenever I was on a diet I would just get more depressed and end up gaining more weight. My doctor then gave me a prescription that is similar to this. I did loose 50 pounds in about 5 months and it did help my mental health a ton. While I do think these types of drugs can be very helpful to loose weight I think they should help train your brain to gain better habits. I was only on it for about 3 months and lost 30 pounds. I kept the same eating happens after I stopped taking it and continued to loose weight. I have lost about another 29 pounds! This drug simply helped me train my brain to learn better habits and in the long run helped saved me from myself.

That’s great! Congratulations 🎉plus you did the hard work people are supposed to while on this medication so your defiantly a success story🎉 Many people on these meds think it’s magic & continue to eat the same unhealthy way they did before and don’t exercise & wonder why the weight isn’t falling off?! You worked the program the way it’s supposed to and repeated it’s benefits congratulations cause there’s no magic pill out there or there’d be a Trillionaire out there and mostly thin people out there!!! Also I’ve heard lots of stories from my patients that once they stopped taking the medicine the weight came right back on & often with extra weight. Well as with the above story one must eat a healthy, low carb, high protein and lots of vegetables diet and continue to eat this way even after stopping the shots again it’s not magic! This medicine helps type 2 diabetics who in general have non or low functioning pancreases primarily in the islet cells of the pancreases so this medication helps wake up these pancreases to breakdown sugars & carbs Ect in their bodies which don’t anymore. My number one concern of this medication is that it’s only been tested on people or animals which have damaged pancreases. So when healthy people start taking it to lose 10-15lbs then what happens to these peoples pancreases & bodies? Will they begin to need the meds to keep the weight off? Will they damage their pancreases? Will they become dependent the whole rest of their lives? We don’t know yet cause it hasn’t been around long enough to be studied long term! So if people are willing to give up their healthy pancreases for 10-20lb weight loss this sadly wouldn’t surprise me at all but be very aware of the potential side effects we’re not aware of yet in long term use(longer than 5years) as well as the possible damage it will do to people with healthy pancreases & the need to possibly take it for the rest of their lives. Or until something else is invented to cause less side effects and less damaging to the pancreas. Which is a vital organ without it one would most likely die or at the very least become a Type 1 diabetic which in itself is a very difficult disease to live a normal life with. And it’s a very expensive and time consuming disease to live with. Pick your battles wisely.

I was on a very similar medication, dulaglutide (Trulicity), and the subjective component of how it works is that it makes you feel sick to your stomach. You don't want to eat. It turned out that I was T1 rather than T2 diabetic, so it wasn't even effective at lowering my blood sugar, but it did make me lose weight to the point that I was almost underweight because I just didn't feel like eating. I was sick to my stomach 3-4 days a week. It was kinda miserable.

That sucks! I had this issue when I was diagnosed with GERD. The doctor was like "take these meds" and said I might have to be on it forever but that was all. I did a bunch of research and made the lifestyle changes and was able to stop the meds. It is crazy to me doctors don't discuss the lifestyle changes in detail, or at least provide some sort of resources (books, online material, recommendation to dieticians etc) for patients. It makes trust in doctors weaker :( meds are often needed but so is the lifestyle changes
