One story I heard, I don’t know if it’s true, is that as the greeks incorporated more peoples into their cultural cultural sphere they wanted to make Zeus the head of those pantheons do so they could bind them together. This meant turning Zeus into either a polygamist or a philanderer. Since polygamy was so antithetical to the Greek view of family they turned him into a philanderer.

That's similar to Flinders Petrie's interpretation of Egyptian mythology: each god represents a tribe (whose god it was originally), and their various feuds and marriages represent a kind of encoded history of the region.
@travisoliver6741
@travisoliver6741 Жыл бұрын
That's definitely the real reason. You have to remember that all gods are concepts given shape, and meant to represent whatever the storyteller wants them to. As a result, whenever gods appear, they exist to push that concept forward, whether or not that it is internally consistent, because there _is_ no internal consistency over hundreds of city-states over a thousand years. One of the most infamous myths in mythology, the rape of Medusa, perfectly exemplifies this. Because Medusa, in all myths preceding Ovid, a _Roman_ writer, was purely a hideous monster along with her two sisters. She definitely had some relationship with Poseidon, but there is no indication that it was rape. Another example, concerning the mighty Kaeneus, had sex with Poseidon, but the earliest records of these myths had her becoming a man so that she wouldn't have any children, not that she was raped and never wanted to be raped again. There are several myths involving sex and certain punishments from deities. But very few, if any, involve flat out rape in its earliest versions (Or rather, the earliest versions that we have a hold of). The main reason we focus on the rape ones are because those are either more interesting, or we get them from Ovid, who is a genuinely good poet, even if the Metamorphosis and its consequences have been a disaster for mythology writers. Hell, certain Greek writers, such as Plato and Euripides, admit that they _don't_ believe tales of gods being petty or exhibiting human vices are actually real events. They would believe in Zeus the Arbiter and Poseidon the Lord of Earthquakes, rather than Zeus the Horndog and Poseidon the Rapist, because the former would probably make a lot more sense to worship.

The story of Zeus banging Persephone before Hades kidnapped her I believe is told by only one source and is not generally accepted. The other of him disguising himself as Hades and going down to the underworld to have sex with Persephone is more likely a mistranslation and bs. Hades was often refer to as the Zeus of the Underworld, hence the bad translation. Also the Underworld was Hades's Kingdom and while Zeus was the overall High King he had no authority in the Underworld. It was know that Zeus and the other gods fear going down to the Underworld because of the fact that no one leaves the Underworld without Hades's permission, mortal or God.

1. The Greek gods were assholes to people for no reason, but if you think about it, life is that way. Terrible random things happen to us all the time. 2. So did Zeus divorce the other wives or was he like the Mormons and Hera was the head wife? 3. How could you leave out the story of Zeus and Ganymede? Zeus was on the down low, but out in the open, replacing his own daughter, Hebe, as the cupbearer to the gods, with his gay lover, Ganymede, a teenaged boy! :)

I once heard about some tracing a family tree of Greek gods and Demigods, and in that chart you had Zeus and a human woman having a demigod son, later the granddaughter of that guy catches Zeus’s eye so he has an affair with her, then a few more generations later he has an affair with his granddaughter of that union. Bottom line in one family tree Zeus appears many times, generations apart. He is horny and immortal so that tends to happen.

You don't mention when our moral upstanding Zeus abducted a beautiful young boy Ganymede.

Obviously by now there is no shadow of a doubt that Greek Mythology would be a much lesser place if Zeus was actually monogamous and devoted only to one goddess for eternity! The Pantheon of divinities would also be significantly smaller... Love him or hate him, but thank him none the less for a Mythology that still entertains and enthralls almost three thousand years after it was written! 😎
