Well not always. There are forms of English in the carribean that's technically English but barely. I can't understand half of what they are saying but it's still their first language. Not that I'd make fun of them though of course. I just can't understand them.

@Andrew Smith I'll be honest, I don't watch this show very often, but I do find her likable, "shouting" is part of her culture. As to why she uses the wrong words, I mean, she was already grown when she arrived there and she tries her best, I know some people find her daft for speaking the way she does but I don't think it's related to her intelligence. Grammar is easy except for irregular verbs. Pronunciation would get me an F minus though. I'd *rather read & write* than *speak* foreign languages. I can imagine Gloria saying "Ayyy Claire your accent sound muy estupida!" And I would say "si! Es dificil to pronounce properly in foreign languages!!!!! But it (my accent) also sounds tres stupide in French & molto stupida in Italian. Gimme a piece of paper & I'll write everything instead of speaking." That is hilarious! Actually, there are some fluent English speaking characters who misuse words in that way: Kelly Bundy from "Married with Children", Eric Matthews from "Boy Meets World" & Tim the Tool Man Taylor when he is retelling a story Wilson told him. They would so totally say "thin ice-shells" at some point. Someday I am going to serve ice cream scooped very thinly & call it Thin Ice Shells.

I have noticed in books that even English speaking people who are not well educated say learn instead of teach. A boy from the mountains (who unfortunately couldn't read yet, even at age 12) asked his teacher "Will you learn me to read iffen you have time after school?" And the teacher said, "Teach me, not learn me. And if, not iffen". I still remember that line. I forgot what book it was from though. That was in elementary school.

My parents are both immigrants from foreign countries. My mom has a super heavy accent and mispronounces things all the time. She taught herself English. My friends and I always make fun of her for her mispronounciations. She gets so offended but it's so cute. Like we're not putting her down. It's just cute. I laugh at others' mispronunciations if I know them well enough for them to know I'm not being mean by laughing. However, I mispronounce so many things I don't like to *speak* foreign languages, I like to *read* them, *write* them, & *listen to others speak* them. Pronunciation is so stressfully hard for me it makes my brain melt. Cabeza derretida, tete fondue, testa fusa.

No spanish speaker would struggle to find the word for "helicopter" since "helicoptero" is the word in spanish... at least this script writers can try to make it look realistic... she doesn't know the word for helicopter but in another scene she says "mixing pot"? I mean she's portrayed like an entry level student of english, there's no way she can know any complicated word ...

She's picking up on phrases she's heard other people say but using the wrong words. Which means she DOESN'T know the words, she's confusing them. Also, just because two words are similar in different languages doesn't mean all of the words are carbon copies of each other. How should she have know that helicoptero is helicopter? Does that mean that gato is gat and perro is perr?
@cesarmorales6368
@cesarmorales6368 9 жыл бұрын
Chelsea, I don't know if you have studied another language beyond the basic stuff of high school... One of the first things you learn are easy words... I'm pretty sure that helicopter, computer and car shouldn't be difficult to learn for a spanish speaker. That would also apply the other way around, an english speaker learning spanish shouldn't struggle to identify the words "helicoptero", "computadora" and "carro"... A grammatical mistake is more believable in Sofia, a wrong use of some tricky preposition (like "in" and "on"), bad verb conjugations and ignorance of phrasal verbs...but she happens to be "fluent" enough but with an ugly accent in these series, how weird is that... Sofia's character doesn't resemble someone learning english, It's not natural.. and in reality Sofia has an excellent english, better than mine...

Disagree. I've worked hard to find a word in French, my second language, only to find out that the term is the same or similar to English. I remember describing "a chair that moves back and forth" in French and then hearing "ah oui, tu veux dire un rocking chair." Same thing has happened with the words "badge" and "kidnapping."

You know in the episode where Luke and Phil go under the house and find old Hallowe'en decorations (and Manny is afraid to go on a roller coaster, and Hailey passes her driver's test) that Gloria says and pronounces "helicopter" perfectly when describing what Javier isn't afraid of near the beginning of the episode? I found that odd the first time I heard it because clearly there is supposed to be a running joke in the show that Gloria cannot ever remember what a helicopter is called or how to pronounce it.
