tom wright I said that the fact that she doesn't know how to say helicopter in english doesn't make sense because it's easy. In Spanish it's "helicóptero" and in english it's "helicopter", so there isn't a big difference when you translate it :)

How do Spanish speaking people roll their tongue like that when they pronounce the "R" sound is a mystery to me. I feel like I will never be able to do that even if I spend my whole life practising.
@AmelieSpark9 жыл бұрын
+kongma Actually the people in all Mediterannean counties pronounce the "R" like this too.
@m.o.4859 жыл бұрын
+kongma it's funny because it's so simple. Feels natural to us. You make your tongue touch your palate, and when you pronounce the R you leave a space between it and the center of your tongue. You have to feel your tongue vibrate
@kongma9 жыл бұрын
Swfan Uboros I know it must feel natural to your people, but it's difficult for me 'cause we Cantonese speaking people never need to roll our tongue when we speak Cantonese. Took me a while back then when I was learning English and Mandarin. So the vibrating R sound in Spanish is especially hard for me.

No spanish speaker would struggle to find the word for "helicopter" since "helicoptero" is the word in spanish... at least this script writers can try to make it look realistic... she doesn't know the word for helicopter but in another scene she says "mixing pot"? I mean she's portrayed like an entry level student of english, there's no way she can know any complicated word ...
@chelseawilson32519 жыл бұрын
She's picking up on phrases she's heard other people say but using the wrong words. Which means she DOESN'T know the words, she's confusing them. Also, just because two words are similar in different languages doesn't mean all of the words are carbon copies of each other. How should she have know that helicoptero is helicopter? Does that mean that gato is gat and perro is perr?
@cesarmorales63689 жыл бұрын
Chelsea, I don't know if you have studied another language beyond the basic stuff of high school... One of the first things you learn are easy words... I'm pretty sure that helicopter, computer and car shouldn't be difficult to learn for a spanish speaker. That would also apply the other way around, an english speaker learning spanish shouldn't struggle to identify the words "helicoptero", "computadora" and "carro"... A grammatical mistake is more believable in Sofia, a wrong use of some tricky preposition (like "in" and "on"), bad verb conjugations and ignorance of phrasal verbs...but she happens to be "fluent" enough but with an ugly accent in these series, how weird is that... Sofia's character doesn't resemble someone learning english, It's not natural.. and in reality Sofia has an excellent english, better than mine...

no hay ninguna logica. en estados unidos los guionistas siempre hacen creaciones asi basadas en estereotipos de su pais y no en nada logico. por ejemplo muchas cosas de nico bellic en GTA4 tambien son asi de ridiculas e ignorantes. la trilogia de bourne me gusto porque fue la primera vez que vi distintos paises bien reflejados en una pelicula de hollywood.

Disagree. I've worked hard to find a word in French, my second language, only to find out that the term is the same or similar to English. I remember describing "a chair that moves back and forth" in French and then hearing "ah oui, tu veux dire un rocking chair." Same thing has happened with the words "badge" and "kidnapping."
@nevmiles6 жыл бұрын
You know in the episode where Luke and Phil go under the house and find old Hallowe'en decorations (and Manny is afraid to go on a roller coaster, and Hailey passes her driver's test) that Gloria says and pronounces "helicopter" perfectly when describing what Javier isn't afraid of near the beginning of the episode? I found that odd the first time I heard it because clearly there is supposed to be a running joke in the show that Gloria cannot ever remember what a helicopter is called or how to pronounce it.
