Since we know the first omnitrix was a prototype, all that needed to be said was that the prototype version stored the DNA locally, but because it's essentially Noah's Ark, later versions became recievers to Primus for the safety and redundancy of the samples. After all, it's good practice to have backups just incase something happens.

To me, it seemed like one side wanted to make each Ben 10 series its own separate version, like how they do with Scooby Doo, Batman, and TMNT, while the other side wanted some kind of consistent continuity between all of them and tried to do something akin to Power Rangers or Pokemon, but not without some kind of opposition, hence all the retcons.

According to old interviews from Dwayne and Derrick, this was pretty much it, but one side (Dwayne) wanted the series to grow with the audience as he was coming off of Static Shock, and the Justice League series', while the other (Derrick) wanted to appease the heads at Cartoon Network, and regress the series closer to the original because the aging demographic didn't capture the toy sales of the original.

That is what is weird. Absolutely nothing in the plot of the arc requires Osmosians to be a mutation in humans, outside of that one scene in the car where they discuss that their entire lives have been a lie basically. They could have kept them as aliens and gotten the same overall effect. It is especially pointless after they scrapped the Aggregor retcon(He was supposed to be revealed as a failed clone of Kevin in an episode they never made. And tbh, that idea sucks), because now bro just kinda exists with no valid explanation or backstory to him.

I'd say feedback existing is a retcon, albeit a small one. If feedback was a big a deal as he's made out to be, then you'd think he'd be mentioned at a few key points. Like ultimate ben telling ben he'd unlocked every alien ben had had up to then, you'd think bed would immediately check for feedback. Or when finding out about primus, he might ask how feedback was removed if the Omnitrix was only a receiver, and didn't store the dna. Or when azmuth gave him master control to fight the highbreed. Feedback could have syphoned energy from the jump gate, you'd think he might have tried it. But feedback was always unmentioned. Its not a big retcon, but it is one nonetheless

I wouldn't say it's a retcon because the presence of feedback doesn't contradict anything. Yes, he could have done all of this as you say, but he also could have not done it. It's obvious from OV that the loss of feedback was traumatic, because when Rook asks him about it, Ben doesn't want to talk about it, so it's completely understandable why he doesn't mention it in UAF. Also azmuth said that they blocked DNA feedback. Again, many of the Ben 10 fandom label everything they can as a retcon, but again, the fact is that the presence of feedback doesn't contradict anything, so it's hard to call it a retcon.

I like the idea of Primus' only purpose being that of redundancy. That the Omnitrix can hold the complete digitized DNA data of over a million alien species, but Primus can contain the actual physical DNA strands, or full-on living specimens so that if one is lost, the other still acts as "Noah's Ark" for those species.

And it makes sense to want all the DNA samples in the Omnitrix to avoid those "cannot connect to primus, get screwed" moments the Ultimatrix had(Which we can just push on it being a stolen pre-prototype unit poorly completed by Albedo), while still allowing for a download request to be made in case it for some reason does not have the data at the moment.

Classic and Omniverse’s futures aren’t the same timeline and now neither are his true future anymore. How I would've made these retcons: Anodites: They are not an alien race, they are a state of being achieved by any living creature that fully converts themselves into pure mana (to achieve immortality and unrestrained mana control). This could solve 3 issues: 1) Gwen isn't part alien, she just had mana-rich genetics and a higher chance of having the spark. 2) It would actually explain why they have no DNA unlike other energy-based creatures. 3) Gwen would still have a Huge mana reserve for Charmcaster and Morningstar to obsess over. Eon: Chronians are an alien race and Eon is one of them. However, Eon's attempt to turn Ben into him wasn't his first or last. In fact, some of them were successful. Hence why Eon appears to be an "evil" Ben. It's just Eon in a fresh new Ben body. Osmosians: They are an alien race. Devin would look more like Aggregor (he just wears an ID mask). Max would not have been Devin's partner at any point or even heard of him (you can't expect him to know everyone). Kevin's Powers: He would only be able to absorb energy (including the Omnitrix's DNA energy) up until Season 3. When he's transformed into that mutant material form, he loses his energy absorption in exchange for the powers of that form. After he's cured, then he has matter & energy absorption.

One of the writers didn't like the idea of Gwen's powers being alien-based because it makes the Ben 10 Universe feel small. Even calling the Anodites "underpowered Pink Lanterns." I can understand what they're getting at as I, too, don't think everything in Ben 10 should be secretly alien in origin. You can add supernatural elements in mix, too. The X-Files did it. Heck, there are mutants in Ben 10, such as Cooper and Clancy.

His backstory is irrelevant because he was actually doing the plan now. Even if you consider Aggregor as a Rooter experiment, the fact remains thet he's still planning to retrieve the Map of Infinity to access unlimited power. THAT is what Paradox is concerned about.

Not only did it screw Kevin's whole backstory up, it also made the Aggregor arc weird. I know it's either been said or theorized that Greg was an experiment thanks to Kevin, but this was never stated in the show so it's still weird. Tbh, there is some inherit messiness to most retcons. I think it would make the most sense if Plumbers were originally an earth organization the way they were originally presented, but then later joined forces and merged with the space cops organization due to them already having previously collaborated under common goals. The way it is, plumbers being space cops from the start makes no sense, but too much otherwise non-contradictory and narrative enhancing content is directly tied to the plumbers being space cops to just write it out.

If I were to make the retcons here's what I would do: Osmosians - Keep the backstory of max &devlin intact - Osmosians are a category of mutants with absorbing powers - For Agregor :he is actually a clone of devlin created by servantis (he tempered with his memories)and he who went rogue Magic & mana - Anodites would be native & dominant species of ledgerdomain - Anodites where the one who taugh humans how to use mana which humans use to create magic - Gwen get her magical aura from her mother side of the family

7:05 Rather than trying to retcon that, the scene is building on that established fact by implying that the stuff in smoothies is comparable to the stuff Upchuck is capable of eating. No one got that because the joke missed. While I hate the whole thing of Osmosians being retconned due to them having too much buildup, the Plumber's Helpers part of it worked very well. If I had to change it, I'd just apply the plans to Aggregor (he was a test tube clone or something) and make it so that Osmos V was an entire planet of unethically-produced memory-altered genetically-altered humans, which would add to the arc by showing how far the Rooters would go for their thing.

If his relationship with Devlin is the healthiest I feel that's sorta the issue, the fact he didn't care at all about Kevin or try in the slightest to help him despite it being is closest partner's dying words just is way crueler than either of the other two situations. Of course another thing with those two examples is that in Alien Swarm (which obviously isn't properly canon, only in the broad strokes) Max is in the wrong and the film knows it, with Phil his return in Omniverse specifically shows the toll it took on Max and treats it as a morally grey decision they made. But the Devlin thing is a total oversight, they never acknowledge how much Max let his dying partner down or even give an explanation why he didn't ever give Kevin a look in. I feel if they wanted it to work there are many angles they could have played it, where not caring for Kevin was Max's biggest regret, or where he had been looking out for him in small ways he reveals to him the whole time, or maybe have had Devlin make him swear to keep away from his son to keep him safe, none of these are perfect but they at least make it feel less like a ln afterthought. As it is I feel like the only real answer that makes sense is Max was insanely cruel to this kid despite knowing how Osmosian powers work OR Devlin was a retroactive memory implanted after the events of the original series. As messy as the rest of the Rooters retcons are that one does really help the characterisation of Max

The Kevin retcon frustrates me for many reasons. The fact that the entire reason for The Rooters arc even existing is to retcon Kevin for no reason, like the arc could’ve worked perfectly fine by just keeping him an alien, and I don’t even mind the other retcon in the arc from the Plumbers Helpers, but the fact they made it just to undo UAF’s world building and never address it again is just so dumb. And it also feels frustrating because it turns Aggregor into this anomaly in the franchise, they bothered to at least acknowledge Devin (Aka a dude who appears in one scene) to try to make it work but they don’t bother addressing one of Ben 10’s main antagonists for a good chunk of the series? While the rooters arc is messy, I do like the plumber kids being humans who had their DNA mutated. It makes no sense how a human can have kids with a Pyronite, so the change is a welcome one. I also prefer Kevin being a mutant, so Osmosians being a term for mutants is a plus as well. If the comic ends up being a new continuity, I hope they redo the rooters arc so it’s less convoluted. Edit: A retcon that I would remove is Gwen being an Anodite. Her being an alien would allow Ben to transform into her species which makes her less unique. If I were to change the retcon, I’d make it so “The Spark” is an incredibly rare gift humans possess that grants them vast amounts of mana. Back in the medieval days, humans were one of the few species that could harness magic because of their high mana reserves. However a great calamity occurred (either due to their own greed or ignorance), that caused many of the sorcerers to get trapped in the Ledger Domain (these are Charmcasters ancestors). The lucky ones who avoided this fate were left on Earth, but started losing their connection to magic as a consequence. Only a few humans have “The Spark” that allows them to still use magic in the modern age (Gwen and some high ranking Forever Knights for example).

My least favorite retcon in Ben 10 was making Osmosians a thing... Let me explain. Back in classic, the nature of Kevin's powers was never revealed, leaving them wrapped in an air of mistery that made Kevin all the more interesting as an antagonist, but not only that, there were several other characters with random unexplainable powers like clancy, or weird devices that don't make sense for a regular person in our society to be able to make, like the hypnosis watch and the weather robot, or straight up physical manifestations of ancient Gods protecting relics left behind by a long gone society... things like these, they breathed life into the world of ben 10, they made earth an interesting and cool setting for stories to take place in, not unlike the earths of Marvel or DC Comics, and with Ben 10's clear superhero roots and the constant references and homages to superhero comics, it's clear that Ben 10's world is one of superheroes, mutants, magic, technology beyond our wildest dreams and who knows what else, or at least, that's what it was supposed to be. When AF came around, they retconned Kevin into being part of a species called "osmosians" which absorb things... I don't like that osmosians happen to look identical to humans, that's just lazy and dumb (I know aggregor has horns but whatever Kevin doesn't he literally looks 100% human even though he's supposed to be like half human) and making Kevin just be part of another alien species out there removed from his uniqueness as a character a lot, same with Gwen, the anodite twist stripped her of her agency and her skill to have mastered the mystical arts as a child by just reading a book, that is some peak origin story material for a magic-centric character in a superhero world, but here, the UAF crew decided to TRY and I do mean try, to pretend that magic isn't a thing, which was incredibly lame and made me whince throughout the entire episode with verdona. The random unexplainable and interesting aspects of the Ben 10 world are gone too, now all of a sudden this is a really boring and common earth with nothing special going on aside from... the forever knights, I guess (they even took Animo and tried to ruin him somehow with the whole D'void persona thing which is crazy). Even with Omniverse, my favorite of all the shows, Earth is only weird if and when aliens get involved, whether that be space dictators looking to take over, or the citizens of undertown being harassed by some criminal doing something that's affecting both Bellwood and Undertown or whatever, it's always related to aliens or alien tech or something, and you might say "duh, this is Ben 10, the show is about aliens" but I beg to disagree, the original concept was that Ben was just the kid with the alien watch, basically one cool superhero in a sea of cool and incredible things going on, this is evidenced by the existence of the secret saturdays, it was always supposed to be a larger world with weird, incredible and interesting things going on that Ben and whoever was with him at the time, would have to navigate by using their abilities in a clever way. I am not a fan of what omniverse did by reversing the osmosian lore, because it had already been established and it would've been far easier and more credible for the audience if they just kept going with that, but if I had to choose, I would've kept the larger world that the classic series offered us... sure, UAF went universal and Omniverse went Omniversal, but their worlds still feel small by comparison to classic's, and I believe this all stems from the changes made by the UAF crew to sort of de-mystify the world for no reason. I still love all the shows tho, I have my favorites but I still believe that the first two seasons of alien force are some of the best Ben 10 content out there, it's just, a real shame that we had to loose so much potential for storytelling to make it happen the way that it did

My headcanons/theories + explanations by 5YL: Verdona: The true identity of Verdona as an alien was a secret to all except Gwen’s dad, Frank (but not Carl for some reason who was in the dark on everything but that’s a different conversation). So when Verdona wanted to go back to her Anodine, they simply said she passed away, before the kids were born. The Plumbers badge: It WAS the Omnitrix symbol, also the Galvan symbol, but once Ben’s identity became synonymous with it, the Plumbers changed it. + The Plumbers were originally earth based but expanded off world to the galactic police force. Eon: As said in 5YL, while the Eon in UA is the same as RAT, he’s been jumping from different Bens so much that he thought he was actually Ben. But he since gained his sanity and remembers who he was. Check out 5YL to see where he is now. Primus: This planetoid was built by Azmuth and acts as a backup drive for the Omnitrix. The DNA is in the Omnitrix and if it ever loses its samples it can sync with Primus to restore it. This is how Ultimate Ben 10k restored Swampfire and Way Big after Eon destroyed them. + The resulting effects of Malware pulling Feedback out of the Omnitrix sent a signal to Primus that for some reason permanently rejected the Conductoid DNA only after regaining it inside Malware (maybe he had its original code in it or something) did Primus receive the DNA code. As I wrote that, I thought of a deeper explanation. Maybe it was a “DNA Safe” code that’s in each transformation and if Primus can’t get that access code it thinks the DNA is too volatile for the user and removes it. But the code + the DNA was still inside Malware and Capture Mode activated while Ben was having his existential realization. Similarly to when he lost the transformations in AF S3 after hacking the Omnitrix. 11:44 I got nothing for this. 11:53 This was originally supposed to be a non-canon episode. Just one for fun. Gwen’s Magic: Gwen’s Anodite side didn’t give her the magical powers. Rather the magical powers activated her Anodite side. She still learned and acquired the magic talent on her own. Once her magic aura turned pink, it awakened her Anodite bloodline. This next part is going to be the longest because it has to deal with reconciling Kevin’s backstory and Osmos as a whole. For this reason I’ll break it down by different parts. Servantis: Servantis did name the Osmosians. He was the Plumber that discovered Osmos 5. He theorized they were humans at one point but evolved. So he reasoned it was a unique mutation someone on Earth could develop. But even Kevin was half alien. Ragnarok: The Rooters needed power for a secret project and contracted Ragnarok to use his solar harvester. Servantis allowed the Plumbers to pursue him when he started stealing suns of habited worlds. Violating their agreement. Ragnarok had run-ins with Devin and they were arch enemies. Devin is Max’s Partner: He was Max’s partner but very briefly. Max didn’t know he had a son or anything else. Max was briefly called out of retirement as the closest available Plumber to join up with Devin to stop Ragnarok. Events play out as we saw but he didn’t tell Max to look after Kevin, he died before that. Instead, Servantis implanted that memory after wiping the memories of the Helpers. There’s 2 Incarcecons: We saw the original Incarcecon in OS which was Incarcecon Alpha. The Null Void Incarcecon Beta is where Kevin winds up in and meets Qwuarel. While the whole of the Null Void is a prison dimension with a few citizens residing there protected by the Null Guardians, the Plumbers attempt to keep their more dangerous ones in actual cells. Up until the Warden is exposed. After that the prisoners were moved and the prison was decommissioned. Kevin: Kevin didn’t know where his powers came from until finally returning home. There his mom and stepdad explained everything to him. This helped him begin to change when Ben and Gwen gave him the opportunity. Aggregor: There was a dropped concept that he was a clone of Kevin made by Servantis who dies at the beginning of the Rooters Arc. But that was dropped. We could bring that back but it may just be easier to say he’s just an evil Osmosian. These last 2 theories are more of bonus ideas than explaining the retcons. And really only 1 is gonna be a theory. I think Ben needs a nerf. He is just too broken he should have at least 1 vulnerability. Omni-Energy: In one of the pop-up facts of the OS they mention that the Omnitrix runs on something called “Omni-Energy.” But this concept was dropped and never mentioned outside that one pop-up. I think we can bring that concept back as a way to explain many things about the Omnitrix and even Primus. Omni-Energy was developed by Azmuth as a self-energizing power source that uses the DNA of various species. This is what the Codon Stream is. Specifically its runoff being collected and reprocessed back into the core of Primus. The Planetoid is basically a giant Omnitrix battery. The Volcano is where the energy is stored, then uses Omni-Energy that makes up the Codon Stream, which spills out the top to reenergize itself, and is reprocessed back into the core. The Omni-Energy is not fully used tho, otherwise it wouldn’t have anything that could renew itself. A percentage of the green ooze’s energy is left behind and slowly recharges. Imagine if you had a chunk of uranium and you somehow drain its energy (without processing it like we do now) leaving 30% behind and it can then slowly regain the lost energy (I know it can’t but for the sake of this explanation imagine it does) back to 100% to be used again. This would be how Omni-Energy would work. And how the Omnitrix battery would operate. In the case of the Self Destruct Mode, this energy is stored up in the battery and not released. The resulting charge compounds until it reaches critical mass on a universal level. I don’t think it would do what the Annihilargg would do and completely erase the universe but the energy release would destroy planets relatively close to it, with the a devastating energy wave that would kill all life as it spreads across the universe. Now as far as nerfs go I think they would be 2-fold. First, too many quick transformers or overuse like staying alien for years can result in draining the Omni-Energy to a point the Omnitrix’s safeguards kick in to shut it down. There are additional safeguards in case of emergency like the failsafe to keep the user from dying, a moment when the user needs the power, or in the case of 5YL’s powerhouse playlist when turning back to human is disabled. This is determined by the Omnitrix’s AI or Master Control override. Otherwise when the energy is drained to 10% it switches to Recharge Mode. The second nerf is magic. The Omni-Energy is incompatible with magic. Causing problems like in Destroy All Aliens. It gets overloaded with mana and needs to be purged from the Omni-Energy. In the completed Omnitrix, it forces a reboot until the mana is dissipates. This can leave it inactive for an indeterminate period of time (depending on the amount of mana). Leaving the user to rely on their own abilities until it is ready. However, DNA doesn’t have magic in it, rather various magic using species have the ability to channel, manipulate, and even generate their own magic and it doesn’t interact with the Omni-Energy unless the user attacks the Omnitrix. In the case of Albedo, his body is now corrupted with Omni-Energy. Syncing him to Ben’s Omnitrix and giving him the ability to generate it. Allowing him to transform at will, but he is unable to maintain the transformations as the Omnitrix systems are needed. Hence his stabilizer in OV. It stabilizes his Omni-Energy when he transforms. Still not as good as an actual Omnitrix, but when upgraded to an Ultimatrix, it makes up for that fact. Which leads me to the actual theory I have. The Ultimatrix was Never Meant to Evolve Aliens: The Ultimatrix was a prototype Omnitrix, the name was merely a project name. Like how the Nintendo Switch was called the NX before its release. He was experimenting with a new energy source, likely the Polymorph Crystal we see Albedo use in OV. But he deemed it inferior to the Omni-Energy as it was far more limiting, going from time before the Omnitrix switched to recharge mode to it just running out of energy depending on factors that Omni-Energy did not have to worry about. When this prototype was stolen and an Omnitrix core with it, Albedo added in the ability to evolve the aliens. It was his UAS (Ink Tank name) program that dictated the factors for evolution. But he isn’t as smart as he likes to think he is. That’s why it was riddled with glitches like the ultimates becoming sentient. This is also why the Ultimate Aliens in OV are different. It’s a new version of his UAS program. The latter managed to impress Azmuth but the former he criticized harshly. Well there’s my long comment. Let me know what you think.
