Hey man, just wanted to say. This video really helped me out. Its reassuring knowing that there are people out there that share some of the same thoughts and feelings that I do. I'm also a Marine Reservist and I agree with a lot of your points. Again great video and have a good day.

Same boat as you. I joined the army national guard at 18 when I started college. It was a fantastic opportunity. I got to travel, get experience, clearance that got me a federal internship, and put some money in my pocket. Then the op tempo became too much my senior year. Covid hit, riots, and deployment rotations and I was trying to balance my school and those commitments and it got to a point where it was really holding me back. I couldn’t attend interviews/testing/etc for a legitimate job because I kept getting activated for pointless tasks. I finally got out in 2021 of November. Got a great job as an intel analyst civilian side and can finally focus on excelling in my career without having to have the military hold me back. Also from a hiring manager perspective it’s high risk to hire reservists/guardsmen because if they get activated for an undetermined amount of time that’s going to set them back

Heyyyy. new subscriber here. I wasn't a Marine, but I was a soldier in the US Army for 5.5 years. I was medically retired in 2015. 6 years later, I often wonder if it was worth it, my time in the military. If the pain and issues that I have now, if it was worth it. Honestly, most days... I think that it was worth it in the long run. I loved being in the military and loved what I did (I was Air Traffic Control). I loved the organization and experiences that I got. I got to go to Germany for 2 years and for the most part I even enjoyed my time in Afghanistan. I know that the military isn't for everyone. I am thankful for my experiences though. I really enjoy watching your videos. I just applied for a GS7 job so I am crossing my fingers that I can get my foot in the door! Can't wait to watch more of your videos!

The reason I’m thinking of joining is because of Discipline. I’ve spoken to a marine recruiter already . I might possibly choose the Air Force

Hey Brother, this is a much needed dose of reality for anybody shopping the branches or considering whether to continue or exit the service. I'm in the National Guard and am halfway through my 6 year. I joined at 28 with some life under my belt and was looking for something similar to you - some sense of direction and variety in life. 3 years in and the Guard has delivered on variety and opened opportunities. It has closed others and invited more healthy questioning the purpose for serving. Guard or Reserve of any branch is definitely a lifestyle decision that should not be taken lightly, because it comes with unspoken costs that active duty do not experience. I have a few more years until my ETS and am still on the fence about whether or not to re-enlist. Nonetheless, your message of taking into account your career outside of the military, how you want to treat others, and where you envision your life are important questions for servicemembers to consider. Cheers to you and your continued success!

Have you thought about making your own video on your journey? Sounds like you have a lot of wisdom that could help potential enlistees. The line of "It has closed others and invited more healthy questioning the purpose for serving" feels like it could be a video/blog post unto itself.

I highly agree with your statement as well! There are some perks but at many times it had became a hinderance. People only benefits the military as you stated if they look for it; I feel there were many benefits that I had to dig hard for and no one really taught us; so I’m sure many of us left the service with benefits on the table. It’s a weird bitter sweet lol Thank you for the video!

I plan on going back and soon given that my in-active service time is almost up. It’s very interesting to hear the experience of the Reserve side, I’ve heard both great and bad things but i believe its up to the individual to bring that motivation and enthusiasm everywhere he or she goes to. Personally I got a good job out of college. Was in a a co -op and then got a full time upon graduation. I tried usmc ocs twice and was medically dropped both times. First time shoulder dislocation and second time, fractured my toe in week 7. Even just those two attempts at ocs hindered my progression in my career because i took breaks. At the time, i thought it was worth it. But looking back, i could be making more now but hindsight is always 20/20 and since i was younger (still young now), I was fine taking those chances. Im a project manager as well and I still want to serve but starting to think it may not be worth it. I think a hard thing for me to get passed is what you said at the beginning; the propaganda, recruiting, uniform and etc. If I join, it will be for the reserves but we'll see. I was 24 in my first attempt and soon to be 28 now. Even in the last 4 years, my perspective has changed. I value my time with my wife and two dogs. I still have that itch to join so I am most likely going to try again. But this third time, I am not rushing. Just going to really research and think a lot about it.

I enlisted in the National Guard when I was 18. I spent 9 years in 5 enlisted and 4 as an officer. My only active duty time was training and a deployment. I kinda have the same view as you. I learned discipline and a level of physical fitness as a young adult which has helped me. That said, the 2nd half of my time held me back in my civilian career and personal life. I’m glad I joined but also glad I’m out. One thing, I wish I had taken my time more seriously. I left a lot opportunities on the table to challenge myself.

Beautiful video and spot on. I too was in your shoes and I too had a lot of regrets and questioned myself a lot for years. WAS IT WORTH IT? Hell yes and you just nailed it why. You learned to navigate the waters and you learned that it was all you and your drive. The Marine Corps is a fighting force not a college. But you obviously got taken to another level through your journey good and including the bad. That is life! Let me include you into a little secret. A big part of why I questioned if all this was worth it or not had to do about lack of benefits unlike active duty gets. For years I always thought you had to be on active duty 24 months not including for training purposes to use the VA and other federal benefits and that is true. BUT...BUT...what they don't spell out to you is that if you become disabled even after you've been out a long time, you get FULL VETERAN STATUS. You have a right to file a VA disability claim as long as you have an honorable discharge regardless of military status. If you get awarded a claim as little as 0 percent non-compensatabe service connected, you get full VA benefits package including VA health care. If you need advice sometime, I can tell you how to do it and its no scam. Its your right as a veteran. Start by gathering up your medical records, firing range visits, inactive duty locations and training and your dd214 for now. Look over you're medical record with a microscope. See what's in there. If you want advice (free of course) send me a contract email. I can tell you this. WAS IT WORTH IT? Now more than ever because I got the VA so YES!!! Don't ever let anyone tell you that you are not a veteran for being a reservist!!! You're honorable discharge is your key for all VA benefits. Its how you skin the cat.

I honestly think you have still a lot to figure out, you are now feeling torn in the choices that you made and for those you didn't. I think you're in the "I wish I knew & did better". Perhaps you did have people who were trying to navigate you in the right direction but you may have overlooked their advices, wisdom. My father was always banging onto me when I was in my childhood that maybe I'd respect him more if he'd went and finished off college and did better for himself and so what I push for my own boys is to do really well with their education/academics. My eldest was a constant push, a lot of push to do well and there was plenty of pushback up until he joined the USAF and now he appreciates what I've tried to do for him, he's now trying to understand and doing his best to nail down his bachelor's. To think he hated my gutts and said to his mom that he would never invite me to his graduation, funny how all that shit changed during his BMT. I set him up for college, swim team, jiu jitsu, flying airplanes, you name it, to keep him motivated and figure out why education was important but he got stubborn during his Snr years and wasted 2 years living a mediocre lifestyle until he fucked up and I told him redemption will be best served via military service, he now wished he joined sooner. He's done almost a year and is loving every moment of it as full time [A1C]. My next boy is plenty stubborn with academics but does better in sports, he's a carring kinda guy and figured he can be an RN anesthetist in the military also but he's having teenage issues with focusing on his pre-reqs at college and is currently finishing his jnr yr. Yes I push em hard, we are 1st generation migrants from the UK and we wouldn't have been granted entry into this great country if we had nothing major to offer in return for green card status through our chosen profession (I as an engineer & wife as an RN). Vetting process takes 2 years to complete, a very intrusive and thorough background checks from multiple government agencies that needed vouching for. We were lucky we did it without any hiccups. And so I tell my kids, to be grateful to be here in the US with opportunities galore and be the best they can be, all the incentives are there, unlike living in the UK, it was just existence. Here in the US, you get to prosper and live!!. Having to listen to your personal experience of military/civilian life as a reservist, I may have to look into advising my soon to be 17yr old into going in as a full time in the Marines. I think overseas travel is very important in a young person's life. The unique experiences of seeing other civilization is important in developing perspective in life, I'm not so sure you guys in the reserves had that privilege? Unless of course you get deployed? Sorry to go off in so many tangents but I will end it by saying that it's important to experience many things of what the world has to offer into a young persons life, especially when they get a first row seat to how other people have it harder/worse than they do. Enlightenment and forging of character through hardship comes to mind. Understanding how time works and how you value your time, isn't taught that much anymore. All the best and thanks for making this vlog.

I am thinking on joining the Marines Reserves. Whenever I get back from bootcamp, I will keep working as a supervisor and finish college. The reason I want to join is because I want to have the “title” of being a Marine. I want to be the first Marine in my family. Also, I want to take advantage of them paying for my college, getting health insurance, benefits and etc. What are some good MOS that have to do with Business because I’m majoring Supply Chain Management.

Education benefits in Marine Reserves are pretty meh. Unless you have FAFSA/ student aid or other scholarships then you’re only getting 13,000$ towards your 4 year degree versus like 20 odd thousand dollars a year so anywhere from 80,000-130,000 if not more. Get active duty time through the ADOS so you can get full benefits and the tuition assistance and then get out with full benefits instead of partial. MOS wise I’d say go logs or supply. I’d sit down and have an honest talk with your recruiter after doing some EXTENSIVE research. Also the Marines and Navy don’t offer as many benefits as the Army or Air Force. It’s worth considering looking at other branches unless you’re dead set on the Marines. There’s the pride and fulfillment associated with being a Marine, but you may have significantly worse treatment at your unit compared to some other person with same MOS in a different branch. Also Air Guard has quarterly drills and tuition reimbursement so does Army Guard and big Army and big Air Force. Sorry if it crushes your perception of what the military is. Regardless of which branch you choose you will be a cog in the machine. You will NOT be an individual. You’re there to aid the collective at the cost of POTENTIALLY harming yourself. Do with that what you will. Also know that no matter which branch you choose, no matter if you choose to go be law enforcement and fire department or whatever in the same vein, you’re still serving your community and country.

I was forced out of the reserves in Dec 2021, it's a meme. It would had been better spent in Active Duty. When you get out of the reserves, you get nearly nothing unless you go on "official deployments", which would amount to 6 months+ (which are extremely few and far between or you get cut orders for 6+ months somewhere), not that you join to get benefits, but fuck it would be nice to get something for your time in. (I was forced out as I was not able to pickup Sgt, denied reenlistment because of this, after I was informed by my career planner that this could happen I did everything in my power to bump my score right after the new JPES system was implemented, apathy on the part of the command from officers and SNCO's, including my CO and SgtMaj resulted in my remedial promotion package being denied as too much time had passed.) I was able to go overseas 3 different times for around 3 months total; Norway, Lithuania, and South Korea. Commands make sure you're orders are cut for less than 30 days to avoid you getting BAH and in turn this will keep you from getting any of the other benefits you might get from leaving the military. For 8 years I stayed drilling long after my obligated time, switched units, bugged my command as much as I could to volunteer for full deployments overseas, was placed in squad leader billets as a Lcpl, I was not a shitbag Marine or an NCO. I planned to keep serving in some way or another long into the future but because of an apathetic command regardless of all the extra work I put in, many times for free even while being in uniform, I was forced out and there are many others like myself who this happens too. The Reserves is not worth it, its a meme. Unless you have a concrete plan to stay reserves while you pursue a career maybe or concrete objectives in your civilian life, the reserves is not worth it. I cannot stress this enough. You will not be thanked for your service afterwards regardless of where you went, how many times you volunteered, or anything like that. You will lose your GI bill when you leave drilling status unless you're one of the lucky few who land a 6+ month deployment somewhere. Your DD214 will be questioned and you will be looked down on by many official potential jobs as it appears you did nothing (because you receive your DD214 after MOS school in the reserves and wont get another one unless you land 30+ day orders, not cumulative.) regardless of how many times you try to respectfully explain why your DD214 looks like that and you did infact do something in the military. I have literally been told by official agencies I applied too who give some preferential treatment to veterans; "We thank you for your service but unfortunately it does not count and you will not be given any veteran credit." If you plan on serving in the military, go active duty, in the end it is much more worth it and you're much better taken care of. In the reserves you get the shaft and literally no one cares, and sure you can say active duty has the same problems and it does to a degree but the vast support networks and benefits that are set up (both officially and informal) are there directly to help dudes who get off active duty. After 8 years drilling and taking extra orders for whatever training they're putting on, switching units, going overseas 3 times, the only thing I get after being forcibly removed when everyone else wants to leave as fast as they can is the VA home loan, I get no assistance with healthcare or school. Again, serving is not about the benefits, but fuck it would be nice to at least get something that says "thanks for your time in and effort". The apathy from the command (who are active duty or active reserves usually) is monumental and permeates the reserves en mass, probably more so than active duty. No one cares if you get fucked as long as they sit in the headshed and laugh at the I&I CO's lame as fuck jokes so they can go drinking on the weekend then get out in a few years and collect their retirement. I'm proud to have served, and proud to be a Marine. What a joke tho. Like Sheldon here says (in different words) there are a million other things you can say about your completed reserve contract when your said and done. My time could had been used better in a different capacity absolutely, or something more fulfilling in the military. Enlisting at 22 and getting out at 30 I still feel like I didn't get anywhere near what I wanted and now am considering going back in as an officer to at least get some of my life fulfillment done, or serve in some other capacity in the military again. Heed my words please, unless you're dead set on the reserves for outside reasons, just go active duty its all around a better deal.

I was active duty Marine, I was stationed out in Camp Pendleton, CA (I was not complaining about it since I’m right next to two major big cities with a lot of shit to do). I went to oversea twice but, I want to take a break from active duty. So I decided to EAS, now that I’m in the civilian world I feel like it’s somewhat better but, I feel like it is not. So now, I want to go do reserve and give it a try, if I don’t like it I can stop showing up without any consequences since I already did my time on active.

@@gogurtz1738 im actually from San Clemente, pretty wild right next door. That's true, you can however in a worst case scenario I think get some kind of punative action. But after being at 2 different units with many different commands passing thru I don't think I ever saw that in 8 years. Not only that but you don't sign a new contract you go to drill on your IRR time, as long as you still have time left on your original contract (since we all sign up for 8 years) past that tho you'd probably have to sign a new contract, unless your in some special circumstance. Honestly for you, the guys who get out of active duty and still want to do it and go reserves its a good deal. Be prepared tho for shit to be really lame however, legitimately by far most of the dudes who checked in who had gotten off active duty usually checked out within 4-6 drills, sometimes after just 1. I'd guesstimate in the 80% of prior active duty guys who check in usually check out pretty fast because there's nothing telling them they can't, and when shit gets lame af they rationally think "what the hell im doing this again? I dont think so" i dont blame them. For the medical insurance and all that it's honestly a pretty good deal, you can pay cheap af for reserve tricare select, which is tricare and great insurance while your doing your reserve time. If you want to do cool shit or at least have the possibility of doing cool shit, depening on what youe MOS was, I'd highly recommend looking to go to a ANGLICO unit in the reserves.

@@maxb4210 they can do stuff sure, usually not much is done tho at least in my experience. After continued UA's things can start rolling on getting a Marine Adsepped but thats really on the NCOs and the Section leaders to continue on the headshed/leadership to get them kicked out, and believe it or not in my experience the SNCOs and Officers in the headshed, who most the time by far are former Active Duty, are apathetic towards seeing those steps follow thru. If your someone who's a mover and shaker the difference between you and the people who don't get stuff done in the reserves isn't who was AD and who's been reserves the whole time its who's apathetic and who's not, probably similar to AD but it's pretty rampant in the reserves imo. A lot of people join for ribbons and gucci gear and are miserable for 4 or 6 yrs. Military is just a tool to build your life and future. They don’t tell you that when you are missed for promotion later on in your military career you are done “not retainable’

Hey brother. I'm a Marine Corps Veteran who served 4 years active duty. I'm in the process of signing up for the reserves and doing your old MOS of 3043. I'm studying business management and wanted to eventually work in the supply chain field since thats my degree field. I'm 27 years old and I would go in as a Cpl. Any advice for me? To your point, do you think it's worth it for certifications? Did this help you along the way? Thanks!

Hey bro I made a video about the 3043 MOS from a reservist perspective so I think you should go check that out. I’ll say that as a reservist 3043 you have a good chance of not doing your actual job but getting placed in the warehouse doing 3051 stuff. For the networking aspect, sure. For the job training and experience aspect, not sure if it’ll be a value add.

Hey Sheldon 👋🏽. First and foremost thank you for your service and thank you for the content you provide. I’m 24 going on 25 years of age. I just had my first child early December and I also have a music career that I really want to grow. I primarily play shows on weekends and really want to be home more often than not to be a good dad. I noticed reserve pay doesn’t really pay well and I’m guessing benefits are limited? Do you think it’s worth it to go into the reserves while trying to be a dad and working on a career in entertainment? I’m also hoping my designated mos helps me get paid in the real world

Personally I think you should weigh out your options between the reserves and active duty to see what can benefit you and your family the most. I believe on active duty you'll get some free time to still be able to work and build your music career as well. I can't think of them of the top of my head but there have been celebrities to join the Marines or military in general and get out to become famous. The choices is yours man talk ro your family and weigh out the pros and cons between active duty and reserves and what you feel can help you grow as a musician as well. If thats something your still interested in of course. Hope this wad helpful.

I think it is worth it for most people IF they use their resources ( benefits, networking, etc). I see Marines getting out who kind of treaded water their entire enlistment. I push Marines to volunteer for courses and other opportunities while they are in. USE the military to get what you want. Now don't get me wrong, the military will get theirs out of you, but it doesn't mean it's all bad for you. For those who have a couple years left, you should really be networking with your seniors who are getting out, any gov contractors you meet during courses or whatever, and use that shit. I got lucky how I basically accidently networked. I would meet a high ranking officer, a gov contractor, etc and after any formalities I'd bullshit with them. I don't care if it's a Warrant Officer (I really did meet one once btw) in Afghanistan. Senior dudes have been in a while know a thing or two. LEARN from them. Ask the contractors for a card, email, phone number, etc for when you get out. It really helps. Good luck Devil. EDIT: Also, yes. I bag on reservists. I bag on everyone though. POGS, boots, weekend warriors, etc. I love them all equally. YUT.

Former active Sgt. never did reserves in the Marine Corps, I opted for the National Guard instead because of how they respond to community crisis. First point, they call it service for a reason, second point, everybody has to have a job, but every job is not a service. A job is measured by money, a service is measured by sacrifice. "Hard Corps" "We don't promise you a Rose Garden" is the price you pay, the sacrifice you choose, to become a Marine. You were a Cpl. so you were a leader; are you saying you never dress down a subordinate Marine? Cpl for me was my hardest rank, because in those days you had to earn the respect of your Marines, only after you achieved that would they follow you. And if they didn't respect you, you got busted back to E3. We understood the reserves was not as intense, but we hoped if need be you would have our back. You can see yourself as a number or a Marine. I see you as Marine! Semper Fi.

I would suggest you go active duty because you get the full benefits after you get out. Ever since I got out, I took the advantage of my GI Bill, everything is been paid for and on top of that you get Basic Housing Allowance depends on your school zip code. You also can claim VA disability with your mos related, like for me, I received 50% VA disability from mos related which is receive $958.48 per month. Something you need to think about it.

Guess what? In the military, you are replaceable, as you said. In the private sector, it's doubly the same. Welcome to life. At least in the Corps, you had camaraderie. That does not exist in the private sector, unless you want to be a supervisor or manager "buddy boy". I agree with your sentiments, but I thank the Marine Corps for showing me life. Everything you bitch about in this video exists on the outside, and I pity you for not realizing it. Should have gone regular, spare.
