To be fair, the timing of the two movies also plays a role as well. The Mario Bros. Movie came out right around Spring Break last year, while Inside Out 2 was released during Summer Break. People just have a bit more time by comparison to go see a movie in summer for a number of reasons.

It's cool. They're both great movies, and I give kudos to "Inside Out 2." It was exactly 9 years since the first "inside Out," and a sequel was highly anticipated for the time. So it makes sense. While it lacked in story, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" was still a joy to watch, whether you're a kid or an adult. And it also proved that movies that are based on video games CAN work when they're done with the proper care and respect for the material it's based on.

Disney has not been seen as a family friendly company in recent years. With a lot of failed movies... Catering to politics and minorities. And not good business practices.. Disney+ has lost a lot of members.. Disney has lost lots of $$$$ and shareholders sueing them for DEI.. Illumination and Nintendo are looked to as more family friendly.. Sure INSIDE out 1 was great before Disney lost its way..and this is why 2 got a lot of $$$$ but Disney is not on top anymore as one of the most Riches companies. Stocks are down alot.. I used to like Disney.. Nintendo is in my #1 spot. Forever. The Mario is my #1 till the next one or the zelda movie..

I'll say that Inside Out 2 is a very good film, but i don't think it really deserved to top off Mario. The Mario Movie was flawed, but everything it did to ensure fans and casual movie viewers alike enjoyed it was absolutely GOD TIER compared to the more uncertainty of Inside Out 2. I love both films, but it's very sad to see the Mario Movie's success was so short-lived. That doesn't mean the 2nd one is on its way to reclaim the throne, though! And besides, the movie was successful and it pleased fans, and that's what matters!

The gaming industry and the movie industry are two completely different things. Nintendo will not let this slip, Nintendo is committed to ensuring that the Mario Movie 2 will be better in every single way than the original. And if that movie is a success, they will probably make an even bigger movie that will be a big finale. probably a Mario Galaxy movie because of the story of Mario Galaxy

I mean Inside Out 2 was ok at most, but I didnt think that it was #1 animated movie of all time material. The Super Mario bros movie was a dream come true for me, I was smiling ear to ear from start to finish, it exceeded my expectations. It was a movie I waited at least 25 years for, and the only movie I have ever seen to exceed my expectations. I cant wait for the next one to hopefully reclaim the animated thrown.

If they manage to make the Mario Movies last for a trilogy, they should bring Princess Daisy in the third film, and have it focus on her kingdom of Sarasaland bring invaded by Tatanga who is after the legendary Mega Mushroom, during the film Daisy & Peach would form a sisterly bond, then near the end Tatanga bring out a giant mech, and the Princesses use the Mega Mushroom to grow to giant size & battle him.
