The Mario plot is not weak, it's just simple and concise. And, given the audience is going to be largely full of children with short attention spans and no desire to get stuck in the trenches, it nailed the story stuff just as much as anything else. The movie is just a pure triumph.

If children and even 70 year olds can full understand it and follow everything perfectly well, and it does enough to convey the hero's journey from start to end clearly and concisely, while not missing a single essential element, the job is done. You wanting more from the plot and character development does not equate to it lacking. And, the pacing was rock solid. I don't think you have any real clue about this kind of stuff whatever, just a misguided opinion.

@@inceptional You being satisfied with less doesn't mean it wasn't lacking either. The plot was rushed, and development was weak because of that. Other kids movies managed to tell good stories with great pacing, so I'm holding Mario to the same standard. Why? Because I want it to be as good as possible. Not over thinking, I'm just thinking about what I watched (which many other fans agree the pacing was the weakest aspect).

I don't mean to suggest that this movie is some timeless classic on the same level as The Wizard of Oz, just that it does exactly what it needs to in order to work perfectly well within the context of that Roger Ebert quote. And, as a movie adaptation based on a beloved video game that's made for kids (small and big), families and a whole load of Mario and Nintendo fans, it was/is an absolute triumph--and no sane person could reasonably have asked for or expected more. You being disappointed with less [really just simple and concise] in no way makes this movie anything less than great across the board. And I'm happy the fact it's an absolute triumph at the box office it doing all the important talking here. Can't wait to see what they do next.

Seeing as I've become a bit of a sucker for these post credit scenes (damn you Marvel), I forced myself to sit there and watch it. So if you'd like to know: The mid credits scene shows Bowser continue singing "Peaches" while locked up in a bird cage, then Toad comes in and shuts him down. The end credits scene is a dramatic reveal of a Yoshi egg cracking in the Brooklyn sewers.

I'm a fan of the idea of a loose NCU. Meaning no deliberate crossover movies, just little cameos and Easter eggs that confirm it's all connected. Like how Link and Samus show up at one point in the inns in Super Mario RPG, or the pictures of Mario characters hidden away in Hyrule Castle in OoT, or the crossovers in Mario Kart, since Mario Kart is in the movies now there's no reason there couldn't be a cameo in a future Kart scene. I don't need an NCU of connected stories leading to a Smash Bros. movie, that's best left as a meme. But half the fun of the Mario movie was all the fan references, like the Punch Out and Kid Icarus references, so let's keep it to that, with maybe some cameos.

I would love a Smash Bros cinematic universe, if only for the spectacle. The early MCU was held together with characters that audiences cared about sharing the screen together, and I think that if Nintendo and Illumination play their cards right, it'll be a treat. They should probably keep it simple, though. Trying to weave stories together and make everything feel like nothing but setup for the next big thing is what brought the MCU down imo, so I hope they avoid that

Mario games helped greatly in putting videogames back in the map after the 83' crash, so it's more than fitting for its new movie to potentially become the first Billion dollar videogame movie and for it to possibly kickstart many more gaming related adaptations later.

I’m not entirely sure if we’ll see a giant Nintendo Cinematic Universe, but what I could see happening and what I would love to see is just a large Mario Cinematic Universe, with lots of Mario Bros. movies and other spin-offs in this Mario universe, such as Donkey Kong Country, Luigi’s Mansion, and Yoshi’s Island.

I feel like a Nintendo Cinematic Universe could be fun, but I'd honestly much rather they go all in on Mario for the time being and create what I'd call the super Mario extended universe. That essentially being the Mario universe plus films based on the DK and Wario series. I feel like Nintendo and illumination would be a lot better at diving deep into one world, especially one as rich as Mario that already has several side series that you could reasonably base movies off than making a massive crossover when cinematic universe fatigue is at a high

Personally I don’t feel quite appealed to the idea of a connected cinematic universe, mostly because something like Smash works in a video game far better than in a movie considering that different franchises have widely different rules in how everything works in relation to them. However, what I would love to see most is a Zelda movie, seeing that the classic fantasy setting gives itself with ease to a far more in-depth story, and I would forgive them giving Link a more actively talkative role for the sake of making the story less reliant on secondary characters or expressions, considering Illumination is not very subtle when it comes to their writing most of the time. Something that could be interesting albeit immensely hard to achieve since the main character doesn’t really talk would be a Kirby movie, anyone aware of the story in those games knows it would make for some fascinating narrative.

2:34 Man you say that like Nintendo ever did or that Nintendo fans expect them too. This isn't superhero stuff where the weight of expectations can be counter productive and you really really have to give thought to everything you do even though no one ever even gets a lot of the basics right. An NCU's interconnectivity is literally as simple as establishibg the core of your Smash Bros roster in stand-alone movies that only really hint but don't drastically connect with each other and then BAM! Once you got all the ducks in place, just have Master Hand come out of nowhere and force your Smash roster to fight in a tournament for his amusement like this was Marvel's Contest of champions with the stakes being that if they refuse to fight, he blows up their homeworld, and if they lose, he blows up their homeworld. Work from there, have the heroes band up against Master Hand because they're heroes, then have them promise to team up again if something like Master Hand ever becomes a problem again, and let them go their separate ways to more mostly self contained adventures until the next threat crops up that forces them into banding together more frequently. Bam. Basically the entire history of superhero comics interconnectivity right there.

Nintendo is collaborating with Universal, and Universal owns multiple studios, including Illumination and DreamWorks. I can imagine the more lighthearted, less story heavy Nintendo franchises like Mario, Donkey Kong, Kirby, etc. will get movies from Illumination and the more serious tone, story heavy franchises like Zelda, Star Fox, Metroid etc. will get movies from DreamWorks

Yes Nintendo cinematic universe made by Illumination only is a bad idea. But you gotta remember that Nintendo opened an animation studio called Nintendo Pictures. I am hoping that Nintendo and Universal will be partners for a long time. Illumination will take care of more "Fun" games like Mario and Kirby, while Nintendo Pictures will take care of Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox etc. That would be perfect for a Nintendo cinematic universe

Personally I think they should keep it as the SMCU (strictly Mario cinematic Universe). There’s all kinds of Mario characters and worlds to make into spin-offs (most notable DKC & both Wario franchises), but not much potential elsewhere. Maybe a few completely separate movies for other franchises could work like Dreamworks Zelda or Metroid, or Illumination with Splatoon, Arms, or a Pokémon movie without humans. For the most part tho it’s best to make sure anyone not in Mario’s world stays that way.

Hopefully because of The Super Mario Bros Movie's success Nintendo will finally let the Mario characters talk full sentences in the video games again instead of the voice grunting and reusing voice clips from past Mario games (particularly Mario Kart 8 Deluxe) for example the intro for Mario Tennis Aces

If a Nintendo Cinematic Universe would happen. It would have to be one movie per year or just delay it if they are not ready to release it to the world. Make sure the people play the games before making it. Get the creators of the games to work on it. And get a group of talented animators who are paid right and get shown in the credits.
