The Marvel Contract: Why Disney World Can NEVER Use Black Panther

In 1994 Universal Studios made a deal with Marvel Comics that gave them the theme park rights to their endless roster of super heroes and villains, allowing them to create Marvel Superhero Island at Islands of Adventure. But then Disney bought Marvel in 2009, which gave them full control to do whatever they want with some of the world's most popular characters...so how come there aren't a million Marvel rides at Walt Disney World? In this video I'm gonna do my best to explain to you one of the most interesting bits of theme park politics: The Marvel Contract. Wachow!

Nice video. To add on to this, Universal lost the West Coast rights to Marvel because they never built any rides in Hollywood. Instead, they built a short lived cafe, and the infamous Spiderman Rocks stage show, which both closed long before Disney bought Marvel. Never understood why Universal didn't just buy Marvel outright in the 90's.

Here's one you missed. Monica Rambeau (in her 80's Captain Marvel costume) is also in MSHI. Meaning all related Captain Marvel characters can't be used in WDW. Same for The Eternals. So this double counts for Kamala Khan (triple if you count her new mutant heritage with the X-Men).

Hoping Universal never gives into Disney and gives up Marvel Land. It’s bad enough Disney owns Fox now and wants the rights to The Simpsons. Disney is a great place but the company is being petty because Universal is a rival. We need more. Black Panther merch in Marvel Land!

I’d love to see a video with your thoughts on the state of Toon Lagoon, and also what’s going on with that amphitheater between Toon Lagoon and Marvel Superhero Island! It seems like a huge waste of space.

The hero he couldn’t name was firelord a character that I first read about in the infinity gauntlet. Also in those comics Adam warlock who is at the park is apart of the infinity watch with gamora and drax

Thats actually really depressing to realize that major theme parks will no longer build things that are not IP related. Some of my favorite rides ever are original concepts like mount Everest, spaceship earth, Soarin, etc... Great video btw!! This was really fun to watch.

Cool to see history again in vlogs. I have a history of Universal by Sims I read years ago that had dozens of stories like yours about Marvel. Including one where they tested Hulk acceleration with the ride developers - and cranked up the juice till someone broke some ribs! Also, I wish there was material/design added to all the FLAT looking artwork in Marvel Island. You see more depth at night, but it would be fun to figure out more depth and comic book realism (in Toon Lagoon too).

Warner Bros wanted 10% of merchandise sales from Universal to allow them to use DC and looney tunes, Universal held firm at 6% even when WB lowered their request to 8% so Universal went over to Marvel instead which desperately needed a cash infusion then. I googled can Black Panther be used at WDW and the info I got was that any Marvel Character in the Avengers Comic Book Universe (ACBU) cannot be used at any theme park east of the mississippi. As Guardians of the Galaxy are not part of the ACBU so they can be at WDW but Black Panther is so he is off limits. Disney probably has a team of lawyers who know the Marvel Contract inside out otherwise we would have seen more Avenger Characters at WDW by now. And although Disney can use MArvel Characters at their other Theme Parks worldwide, that contract still forbids them using the word MARVEL in any signage or description of those attractions

Great video as always, I think Captain Marvel may be fair game for WDW, and may be someone they could be looking to considering Flight Force in Paris. A Doctor Strange ride would be a great addition if Disney wanted to incorporate him into the parks somewhere.

Universal should keep Marvel. I enjoy the Hulk coaster and The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman... And although I haven't been on the new Spiderman ride in Disneyland, the one at IOA will always be my favorite!

On Fox’s side, Disney can use any of Fox's animated works except for The Simpsons and Horton Hears A Who, because of their presence at Universal. Other than that, Anastasia is free to be a Disney Princess!

I think this contract holds up to us fans the fact that Disney can’t build anything marvel and the fact universal can’t add anything new to superhero land doesn’t benefit us fans…I want Disney to take the rights back for theme parks and for universal to make DC theme

Regarding adding more Marvel rides to IOA. I read the contract also & it allows UOR to use the IP pretty much how they see fit. Additionally, it says in the contract that Marvel is REQUIRED to provide assistance in new developments, including artwork and key executive personnel. So if UOR decides to build an Ironman coaster, they can & Disney has to help them do it. They must use the costumes from the comics though, and not the new MCU images.

No, as per the contract universal isn't allowed to add any new attractions without Disney's approval. And you can guess what Disney's answer to Universal adding a new Marvel attraction would be. Which is why they've never added any new attractions

I would wager that in the early 90’s Six Flags was pretty damn popular and they had the money to snag DC. This would’ve been before Universal solidified itself as a theme park powerhouse with Islands of Adventure

I kinda have to disagree with this. That artwork is not enough for them to block disney from doing a wakanda. If they had a ride or attraction , thats one thing. Otherwise they would of already painted guardians somewhere. When they say used within the park, they arnt talking about a mural. It's referring to being used as in a attraction or meet n greet or show. And I would say most definitely guardians are associated with the avengers having worked with them several times.

In fact Due to the Marvel Contract when Disney promoted a THOR movie on its monorail at WDW, it made sure that the monorail with the THOR adwrap only circled the monorail resorts and never went to EPCOT because of that contract
