Yea but question whether Gordon fired her out of spite or whether he was doing it as some noble gesture. I didn't get a feeling it was for her own good. Also....wtf happened with Joel? I know WHY he was imprisoned but what happened to him after he got out?

It felt rushed to me and too abrupt especially given him and Rose not being willing to accept it when she explained she'd gotten her job on the show only a few months prior (by the time line). I wish we would have seen more movement in this direction from his character sooner, starting maybe after that night he gave Midge his check and the toasted over their art. Or even in that scene where they are having breakfast and discussing Midge's hire. It would have been more interesting to see Rose still firmly in dismissive denial land as we've seen her before while Abe was more confused as to how it happened and asking for clarification.

Touching, beautiful ending! She finally makes it 'big' and her family, friends, Susie are all there proud of Midge and joyful! She had her Chinese dinner with Lenny which was sweet, heartwarming and special. Best way to leave things in this series because we all know the upcoming tragedy of Lenny's life. And lastly: Midge and Susie watching a TV program 'together' across the miles! Laughing together & enjoying eachother!

@krose6451

I actually didnt appreciate the ending with Lenny and had wondered if I was alone in that. This is the first Ive heard anyone discuss it. For me it didnt land right for several reasons but the biggest was because so many people dont actually know his real story, only what they see on this show,so showing him at such a low point as they did and having it so tied to Suzy and Midge who are fictional felt very wrong. The creators were interviewed years back about how thye would handle Lenny's death if they continued to feature him on they show and thye agreed that the only way to respect the man was to respect the truth in what happened to him. Instead we get something that feels like part of a fictional romance drama than a chance to share the story of a real person. Before this I kept expecting one of the flash forwards to be Migde finding out he died or some sort of memorial with them talking about him so the show could discuss how he died and what he did in his life and tie it in with Midge mentioning what he meant to her or her having that fortune if they wanted to tie it in with the rest of that bit. I think it would have been a lot more powerful if they had arranged their timeline, so Midge had her Carnigie hall performance happen not long after his death. It would have been a small detail that would have meant a lot to fans when they put it togehter. It also would have made sense that with fresh grief and the connection to Lenny, she'd struggle. As it is when I looked it up I believe they ended up writing it as a few years apart.

I truly appreciate how they pay homage to Johnny Carson. Carson calling a comic over to sit after their set was like being anointed. SO many careers were launched simply by being called over by Carson to have a seat: among them were Eddie Murphy, Drew Carey, Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano, Robin Williams, and of course, Joan Rivers.

That was the scene that brought things full circle and showed the "big break" for Midge. I almost wish it would have ended with her Lenny at the Chinese restaurant. Or that they would have made it longer so we know what happened to all the characters. Made me sad to see her and Susie in their lavish homes old and alone. Midge holds up a wedding pic of her and Joel- he ends up in jail for her and in 2005 it is assumed that he's dead. We don't know if they ever got back together before his assumed death. It was obvious that they still loved eachother. Midge kids are no where around. One could assume she doesn't have a relationship with them or her grandkids. Sad ending in my opinion

No one likes happy endings cuz otherwise there would be criticism about realism. The show was about women wanting different things than what their upbringing had trained them to want and the results of that. Show had already hinted at her lonely personal life back in season 2. Extremely successful ppl in showbiz often drift apart from children. The ones who have a stableish relationship will be the ones who have a supporting partner who holds the fort at home.

I loved the 3-tiered ending. This is the first fairy-tale ending we all wanted. And then I was like I don't want it to be over! And then it wasn't, and the Lenny scene was also sweet. And then I didn't want it to be over! And then it wasn't and this last part was bittersweet but honest, and I like that. The reality of growing old as a woman -- honestly, whether you make it big or not -- is we outlive a lot of people. Statistically we live longer than men. So these friendships and bonds we have with other women no matter whether we're gay, straight, bi whatever THAT is who is really going to be there for us at end, statistically. Women are trained and conditioned to make men the center of their lives and the reality is that is a pretty dumb thing to to do for a lot of reasons. You can love men, you can have a great time with men. But for most of us women, men aren't going to be the number one people supporting our dreams or even overall lives long-term. I love this honest ending and it has a lot of us thinking of who we hope we're watching Jeopardy with at the very end and who will keep us laughing no matter how decrepit our bodies get.

I honestly wish they hadnt given him such a turn around and instead have given other characters the same kind of grafeful growth. It makes rewatching seaosn 1 hard as he's being just so loathsome and you know how much harder he's gonna make their lives, hurting himself and others. Then in later seasons when he doesnt certain things I get ticked cause its like "ah no buddy. Youve turned around but you screwed up big time. Do not go rewriting history!" Yet because the writers were turning him around it feels like he's not actually allowed to be called out properly when he does becomes a hypocrit.

Same. It takes me too out of the moment when they purposely shoehorn a refrence like that in. Im just imagining the authors knocking my elbow whispering "see what we did there?" And for it to come from him when he's been an intresting but certainly not admirable or very important character felt meh. And by not important I mean, given how things play out he doesnt really drive Midge as a villian or help her. He's just a kind of crappy boss who wont stop hitting on her and doesnt even seem to really respect her but is kind of crismatic and provides the right plot set up for Midge to get herself that break. It would have been far more corny but I would have respected it more coming from Lenny or Suzie. Hell, maybe even Joel if they wanted to embrace the bitter sweet "her married name is still her stage name" thing to tie in with all the Jole/Midge feels they pushed this season.

Can we all agree that Gordon Ford was the true villain of this season? George pulled him out of obscurity doing the news in the middle of nowhere and streamlined him to his level of success. Susie brought him Sophie Lennon on what was one of the most successful moments for him and Sophie. People are doing him all these solids yet he didn't want to pay it forward. His hand was forced and he was so upset of the idea of anyone in his circle having an opportunity to shine. Add the sexual harassment in the work place. I hope Hollywood takes note from Mrs Maisel that it is actually possible to create a well written, wonderful show while still promoting an agenda (in this case feminism)…a show that can be enjoyed by anyone. For an example of a show where the writers put their agenda above everything else and ruined the show, try watching She Hulk.

He's representative of the average male you need to step over -- he was literally the final boss! I've found that when you need to step over or get around these kinds of guys, you have to do it so delicately that you ultimately have to bring them around to benefiting from your success as well in order to keep them from continuing to road block you. She does this expertly here in a chess move that basically forces him to be her number one supporter and "discoverer" or else the whole audience would turn on him. I can't count how many people have tried to sabotage my success and then later when I'm winning awards, etc. act like they were supporting and believing in me the entire time. 🙄And then you just have to roll with it because you're past that stupid battle against that stupid person and on to better things. 🙌

I think it was retaliation presented in a more "charming" way so he didnt have to burn the bridge professionally speaking and because even if he isnt happy with her he still likes her (maybe just in a "wants to sleep with her" way but Ive seen the extent debated). The guests are what make his show. We see several examples of that. And having "friends of the show" they can call on in a tight spot like we see with Sophie is important to continued sucess. Its good pr and good for viewership for Midge to be coming back on the show later if she suceeds, to be his former writer returned after he gave her her break. If she suceeds it also helps bring others to the show. And if people ask about did she quit? Was she fired? It can be presented as a joking supportive thing that he fired her to set her free so as to not get bad press. However behind the public image his people who will know he wasnt happy can speculate that she was fired as revenge and take it as a warning not to pull the same shit.

Personally, I felt like the show runners should have sprinkled in the two Lenny Bruce scenes from this ep as openers for some of the other episodes this season to spread out his influence over Midge’s arc in S5. Then, they should have opened the finale with the two 2005 scenes showed at the end. And I think the end of this scene here would have been the perfect place to wrap the show. Has this “Whiplash” conclusion that I feel like could have really been taken advantage of.

@@Sdority905 There's no doubt that the central relationship is Midge and Susie, but there were a few loose end I would've wanted to know about. Like MIdge's reaction to Lenny's overdose or what happened to her and Joel. I think the last of Joel we heard in the 'future' was her saying she still loved him; I would've liked to see where that led to after he was released from Prison. We know he isn't around at the end of the show but We have an idea of where everyone is vis-à-vis Midge by the end (Her parents supported her, she supported her Mom till the end, Abe got his genius in Esther, Esther got messed up by her parents, Ethan went to Isreal and got kids) but what the hell happened to Joel after he was released? I would've liked to know, not just if he got back with Midge but just for the sake of his character. @@flamethrow868 the way Midge wad holding the wedding photo in 2005 made it seem like Joel had passed away by then. They both would have been in their 70's by then. I was wondering the same thing too about what happened to Joel after he got out of prison. Also it would have been nice to see an update on the kids in 2005. The last we saw of the kids was in the 80's. Perhaps part of the ending could have shown Midge spending time with her children and grandkids. Even when it came to her parents Rose had an unknown illness in the 70's so know she died in the 70's but we don't know what happened to Abe, when and how he passed away. So many lose ends with the supporting characters. Perhaps they could have made episode 9 longer or added an episode 10 to wrap up those loose ends.

@@kdcreative9541 I really think her and Joel did end up together in some fashion at least. Their exchange in this scene, him telling her to go ahead and joke about her (which was one of the things that kept them apart in season 2) and also the way she touches his photo in 2005... all tell me that they were together if not remarried.

@@sblood311 I wish the writers of the show would have made it clear instead of having us guessing or assuming what might have happened with Midge and Joel. They knew us viewers would want to know lol.

(Reposting an old comment) Who is to say Joel and Midge didn’t get together? and I have to watch the season again but from what I saw first time around, it’s pretty open ended. The black and white photo is just that, her admiring it. Maybe that’s her hint to us that she chose him in the end. At the end of her almost wedding she chose Joel. Pretty sure she went to him soon after. Just because they didn’t make it this grand love moment doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Maybe it was the show’s radical way of saying “yeah they got back together,,, but you knew that. This story isn’t about them. It was always about midge and Susie. So it’ll end with them.”

I love this show but felt this scene was disingenuous. Gordon had already seen her standup and knew she was funny but refused to put her on the show. I sincerely doubt this one routine would make him forget about his rules and the anger he felt towards her 5 minutes before. If anything, he would have been even angrier. This is the once instance where the writing let the show down.

Me too (Not disappointed, but about knowing more about Esther). Not just Esther I guess, but to Joel after he got out of prison, of Abe and if he ever had a lasting legacy beside Midge and Esther, but we kind of got all of it in reading between the lines. Esther felt that she got messed up by Midge, but was very close to Abe. She eventually got her Doctorate, and went on to presumably be someone important in her field. Abe ended up noticing his female descendants, regretted not realizing it sooner and not giving Midge the attention she deserved, which translated in him nurturing Esther and giving her as much attention as he would've given his son and grandsons (which is a great character evolution for a grand father in the 50s IMO). But Yes, would have loved to SEE it, just a scene between Adult Esther and Midge, and maybe a teenage Esther and old Abe, or maybe one scene for all, Midge and Esther talking about their relationship and Abe after Abe's passing.

@@tracim3080 Yes, my guess is that they didn't want to hire a third actress for Esther as he probably died while she was a teenager. I would have loved to see him live long enough to see her get her doctorate, a scene where maybe Midge didn't get to be there for her daughter's Doctorate Lecture, but Abe was there. But I guess I can just have that in my head canon lol

I AM SO THANKFUL for how they did not ruin the show. The final season was the best written final season out of any series. I am just sad that Joel spent about his 15 years in jail, he deserves better. He really deserves the world. Lenny also deserves the world and the scene Midge tried to visit him broke my heart but it was mandatory to make him die because it happened in real life. But except that, I love how all the characters ended up well, yet it was not unrealistic. This is how you realistically make a comedy series about a comic's life. It takes too much effort to make a show like this. The clothing, costume designs, the 60s British royal accent of the princess, the concept of the jokes, type of the jokes and comedy style of the 60s and other periods, daily life of people in those years, how cohesive they did all those stuff... it was all so on the point and so perfect. What I mean by cohesive is, the daily life of women and queers and people of colour might seem very infuriating when we look by today's perspective, but the fact that they showed all of the people as if they don't care about the unfair things they receive because they don't know the more judicious version of their lives was really convenient. Accordingly, Midge's speech about independence of women was empowering instead of being overly told or cliche. This was her best performance so far and I'm literally proud of a fictional character.

I Still think he was faking all of that praise, he knew if he didn't, he would only ruin his reputation and be hated by the audience. She was so good that he was so jealous of her. So the "you're fire" is a genuine "FU and Good Luck".

Mostly agreed but it felt more like a "fuck you but Im not burning this bridge incase I can benifit from you/sleep with you in the future so here's a wink so I can gaslight you later about why I fired you just incase." I dont know if it was actually a choice so much as subconcious motivation but yeah.

Her big break on the Johnny Carson show....errrrr Gordon Ford show was the highlight of an otherwise disappointing season. Her character was loosely based on Joan Rivers down to the stools her and Johnny used on her first appearance on his show.

I honestly feel this should've been two seasons or at least a few more episode to give the story credit, instead we get a storyline that last for more episode that it should because they want the last episode to be the climax, when the climax could've been mid-season, while scrambling up a few flashbacks to the future in between, which feels rushed.Would've loved if they ended the Gordon Ford storyline a bit earlier, and just made the last or couple last episode in a documentary format, a Midge 'tell all' interview while she remininsces in flashbacks to everything that happened after her big break on the Ford show. Would give more structure and be a lot more impactful than a few flashforward of a couple minutes in each episode.
