There were very few monks when I visited in November too and it was before covid. I think it's due to the fact that there are very few buddhists in India nowadays and most pilgrims come to Bodhgaya. I visited a few other buddhist sites like Sanchi, Saptaparni Cave, Rajgir and they were all pretty much deserted. Enjoyed watching your visit to Sarnath🙏

Buddhism pretty much died in India (except for the much newer Navayana and the HImalayan states) ironic considering it to be the birth place of Buddhism thats why you wont find droves of monks in North Indian buddhist pilgrimage sites like in Lhasa or Tawang. After the Mauryan Empire ended the regional kings found it more easy to give patronage to Hinduism to give them the legitimacy to rule like the Guptas, then the Islamic Invasion pretty much ended it. And as you said that Buddha never told anyone to blindly follow his path and the various forms like Vajrayana and Theravada just did that. The form which is best suited is Vipassana which doesnt deal with ritualistic conservatism.

Buddha was basically another saint came out of sanatan dharma he followed one of the six school of thought of sanatan dharma. Actually in mauryan emipre hindus and jain (especially jains) approx 18000 were literally burned alive for wrong depiction of Buddha which brought hostility against Buddhism but hostility was not that high the real problem came when islam arrived in india. Bakthtar khilji started it from destorying nalanda and later we all know what happened.. today the Marxist and maoist use Buddhism to portray as seperate religion and a religion which came to fight against evil of Sanatan dharma which is false because even today you will easily find depiction of hindu god and goddess inside Buddhist temple all around the World and if you go to ladakh they follow maa kali and you can find her Buddhist discription in their monasteries

As an atheist i find problem in religion and idea of god but pretty much don't hate hindu jain Buddhist for not being aggressive and radical when it comes to their core ideology. Not talking about later corruptions which can be reformed i think.

Only problem with Buddhism is that Buddha said nothing special he did not brought any revolution of any thought process he pretty much talked very general things what every good human being would sa. Things like Nirvana and all were already party of Sanatan dharma and the 7 teaching of Buddha was exactly same what a good school teacher tells you
